Wanting a sci fi mmo until star wars comes out depending on how well it does, but im iffy about not having quests, I grinded in eq1 and it was fun but after trying out pve quest based games that are actually good it is hard to see me for grinding just mobs still I may be willing to give it a try.
So my questions, how is the pacing of getting new visual looking abilities? Is there nice flashy futurstic weapons in this game? Is it populated for lots of grouping? I love grouping, is there any real lore to discover or is it just find some mobs doing there own thing?
Are there any other features I should know about that make the game more interesting?
And what makes you enjoy ryzom other then the sandbox options that reason is obvious compared to other mmorpgs right now?
Thanks all.

ive been tempted to get back into ryzom but due to its unstable nature i'm scared of putting time/effort or money into it, even if it seems to calm down... nothing says F*** YOU more than a game closing doors after you've spent time and effort into it
i used to play it way back, and it was fun. but i dont know much of the recent changes.
but even if its appealing, i'm taking a bullet and not going to it just because of its nature.
I've listed some features of Ryzom in this thread. I have only been playing one and a half weeks after spending years deliberating, and am thoroughly enjoying the experience. However, based upon your criterion of a Sci-Fi MMO, I would suggest that Ryzom is not the MMO that you are looking for.
It's alternate fantasy (think more Morrowind) with Sci-Fi influences, rather than AO [Anarchy Online] or SWG [Star Wars Galaxies], You can get a better feel for Ryzom through the New Player Guide thread.
To address your questions:
There are visual looking abilities for melee and magic, however I haven't seen a great many so far playing the tutorial and during my first forage on the mainland
There are a few technological based guns and projectile weapons - no "flashy futuristic weapons"
Ryzom has a small, but enthusiastic and friendly population - whilst small, you can group because a lot of player interdependence is required (lots of actions are conducive to group play) and the community is friendly and welcoming **
The game is rich with lore - it's a major feature of the game because players (those involved with RP) can and do take an active part in player-governments and effecting ingame events, inc. the lore itself
Creatures are part of the ecology in that they have their own migratory patterns, attack and are attacked by other creatures (preators and prey), roam in packs, and generally feel more alive e.g. quite a few creatures will approach players, sniff around curiously, and some - like the Yubo - may even pee on a player's leg!
** Whilst I have met and grouped quite a lot on Silan [tutorial], I have only duoed a couple of times on the mainland. Why? First, Ryzom's population whilst friendly, is small. Second, most players are guilded (yet will help others). Third, Atys is huge (feel free to add the Douglas Adam joke right about now) - players start in one of the four main regions (civilisations), so the player base is dispersed. Fourth, all the servers are Euro based (3 servers based upon language: English, French and German) so dependent on timezone may feel larger or conversely, a lot, lot smaller.
I've finally started to play Ryzom because the sandbox elements are simple to grasp, well-designed, but also rich and complex that allows for lots of options. The sandbox elemements are interwoven in a rich, detailed world that feels alive and doesn't set out to arbitrarily limit the player. A few threads in the Ryzom discussion forum that discuss this subject:
RP nod from Massively.com
Best sandbox
Oh my God! Why has no-one told me before!?
I must admit that one of the nagging voices in my head is wondering just how much sand is in the sandbox for players to create content in terms of what can players actually do ingame? So, here are a few threads that offer a counter opinion:
To the general MMORPG.com community - why do you dislike Saga of Ryzom?
Why is this game so obscure?
There is a 21 day trial if you decide to try Atys. Bear in mind that the tutorial is designed to teach you the mechanics and provide insight and instructions on Ryzom's key features. Gameplay on the actual mainland is different in that whilst there are missions, you are not hand-held from mission to mission - aside from a few basic missions to get orientated, you are left to your own devices.

I felt the same way as you did but I figured subscription is only $10 bucks (monthly) and I enjoy the game I decided to give it a go. I'm still in my first month and from my point of view the game has improved greately. I do spend alot of time playing and have the opportunity to meet and team with players from all time zones, which enhances my game time. I hear people say the game is empty and there is nobody around in the cities, but in the total game time of 22days and 17hrs that I've played I've not had any problems teaming, exploring, and enjoying the game. With the release of the Linux client the game seems to be attracting more players, but Ryzom doesn't seem to appeal to the general gamer, the game appeals more to the old school player IMO. I say if you enjoyed it back in the day, you will enjoy it now as well and probably even more. Hard to say if and when any game will close the doors for good, I would hate to miss out on playing a game I enjoy because it may not be there tomorrow. The fact is it is here now and waiting for you (or anyone) to come and play. Subscribing does help the game stay online and a greater chance to improve, add new content, continue the storyline, etc., not the otherway around.
