I am just curious here. But why would you choose to play swotor over guild wars 2, tera, or rift?

heres a few of my reasons, exluding bioware and it's star wars.

First off, i like that the story is customizable.

I like that theres an alingment system.

I like that lightsabers actually block the blaster fire.

    I like the morphing system

I like the wide open worlds with no loading screens

I like the ability to have my friends interact in my story.

    I like that it's sci-fi.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.

For me its simple. I hate NCSOFT, with that pos called gameguard you need to run their games.   I hate ncsoft so much I never post anything on any site about them.

I just saying i think so little of NCSOFT that I would never buy anything they make.

So that makes it quite easy.

There really isn't anything to explain, everyone has their own likes/dislikes. For the same reason you wonder why people want to play it, some people wonder why you wouldn't want to. I could ask you why you think Guild Wars 2, Tera, and Rift are better, and everything you say will be an opinion. Everything. Everyone who wants to play SWTOR has their own different reasons, you can't really generalize a question like that.

    Wow.... uh yeah... lol

Well Guild wars 2 and tera are not made by ncsoft.. guild wars 2 is made by arenanet, ncsoft is the publisher. {yes i know, ncsoft techickly ownd arenanet  but they are keeping their hands completely out of the guild wars franchise.. and with good reason)

It's gonna be hard to get a general solid reason though, cause most people want it for different things! :P

I've personally always been a fantasy fan (swords, magic, dragons, etc).  I like Sci-Fi too, but not as much as fantasy.  However, I do have to include "because it's star wars."  I don't care for Eve and other sci-fi MMO's, but star wars is just that one sci-fi that really interests me.  But here's 4 reasons if you want me to be more specific.

    1) The game is supposed to be entirely voice over.  I've never experienced that in an MMO before, so that'll be a new change for me.

    2) It has space combat.  Right now it's just a mission type of thing, but they mentioned later they plan to add PvP space combat and that is something I'd really like to try as long as it's not like Eve.  Even is not a bad game and I love PvP and a challenge, but in that game the fun just didn't apply to me.

    3)  Look at the Game List on this website.  THe majority of the game genres are what....Fantasy.  There is a fair chunk of Sci-Fi as well, but not as many as Fantasy.  On top of that when you look at games that are normally most popular has generally been Fantasy.  Tera...Rift...GW2....fantasy.  This Sci-Fi game though seems like it'll step into the spot light and not fade away quickly.  It''s a nice change to look forward to a Sci-Fi game instead of the usual Fantasy which I'm fond of.

    4)  I don't know if it's true, but I read in an article that the amount of cash put into this project was $100 mil.  That is a lot compared to your normal MMO.  And if it's true....it'll definately be worth checking out.

Ah, well I do want to play Rift as well so I'm not completely bias lol. I own Guild Wars and kind of want to try GW2 but kinda not so yeah. If I had to gather all the reasons I want SWTOR without "It's Star Wars and it's BioWare" I wouldn't really have an anwser! I honestly want to play it because I love Star Wars, and the last time BioWare made a Star Wars game...we all know what happened. So I don't see many reasons this one would be bad, at least for me. One legit reason I would be able to give, though, would be that it's Sci-Fi and I am a bit tired of fantasy MMOs...

I also wanted to add their dedication to making sure the game works entirely.

They have stated that they never show anything until it is 100% working and in game, thus making in nigh impossible for a feature shown to be taken out of the game.  That shows they care about the fans more then the hype they will get.

Second they make sure that everything works 100%.  For example, there was a problem with the lekku (the head tails) on the Twi'lek bounty hunters. So they said they w'ont add them to the list until that is correct.  The problem by the way was that the lekku (head tails) were clipping through the jet packs.  That shows to me their dedication to detail.

Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

For me it's a few reasons.

    - I don't think Tera and Rift are quality games that will create a foothold in the community. I don't think there's anything exciting about them and I think they'll fall by the wayside like low-pop games, ie Vanguard/WAR

    - Bioware has a proven track record when it comes to RPGs

    - Star Wars is Sci-Fi, something that I enjoy more than Fantasy, which is frankly overdone in the genre. Sci-Fi represents only a smaller portion because people like to do what's safe, or they don't know how to do it right.

    - the Old Republic setting was the best choice. It took a known good setting, with some rich history, but it also put the game in a timeframe where Bioware could do pretty much whatever they wanted with storylines. This is imo why SWG failed (and I said so before it launched); setting the game in the middle of the movies meant there was a very specific events that had to happen in order for it to remain proper. Having TOR be 300 (or whatever) years after KOTOR, they still get the known values of the sith and jedi as well as the ability to link back to the storylines people love from that era, while still having the freedom to make stuff up as they like (within reason).

I forget where else I was going (I've been drinking this evening) but there you go.

    Bioware is making it.

Do i really need to say more then that? I cant think of one bioware game i didnt love, enjoy, play through more then once... Automatic buy.

Where as, guild wars i got bored of in the first month, tera hasnt shown me any reason why i should expect to play it more then a few months and rift is quite literally a WoW clone, which is what the devolopers were going for, its boring, in the beta, been in since beta 1, i dont plan on buying it.

#1 SWTOR= Deep and strong story, open world similar to WOW and LOTRO (hopefully even bigger), offers several play styles for your mood that day (PVP, RPG, PVE, Grouping, Solo, Crafting, Mini Games, etc, love the voice overs which was a big hit in AOC tortage, love the alignment system, a good sci fi, currently playing KOTOR to be followed by KOTOR 2 and want to see how they continue with 3-12 as they said, Bioware=Polish and trust.

#2 GW2= To play in down time of SWTOR, more arcade style run around and join in with people similar to Warhammer Online, lighter story, options, and depth  as compared to SWTOR (you have your personal story). Prefer their Art style based on latest videos. Expect to play this as a back up to SWTOR.

#3 Tera: Not enough enough to decide yet if Im interested

#4 Whatever Blizzard announces and releases in 3 years lol

Currently have no interest in Rift, but still havent completely closed the door on it.  I am just so bored of the status quo and Rift is basically identical to WOW+Warhammer+EQ2 with a very over hyped rift system. Very polished game and fun for those who are not worn out like me or who are not veterans and relatively new to this genre.

Biowre fucked up. They should have chosen dragons age to make it MMO. Star Wars's story is just really really bad and childish. Everything else is better.

  • artemisentr4artemisentr4 Member UncommonPosts: 1,431

I have no interest in Rift or Tera. Rift just looks like a do over of WAR and Tera looks too arcadish. I will try GW2 because it will be B2P and I think I will like the solo action style of the dynamic events. Just show up, and have fun for awhile. I will mess with the story part, but it seems to be very shallow. We shall see once they release more info.

But SW:TOR will be my game of choice for 2011. Mainly because the RPG will be re-introduced to the MMO. Most MMO's today are just MMOG's, not MMORPG's. Because reading the text is pointless and in the way of end game to many gamers. So it is just a grind to end game, a grind for gear, then a grind to be the best in PvP. That goes for sandbox games as well. You grind your way to own something or skill up. Then join with others to keep it or lose it. And that is all there is IMO.

BW will bring a high level of RPG story for the leveling process. It will be meaningful leveling to learn about SW lore and shape your character along the way with actual RPG choices. As well as being in the middle of a large MMO game world. Filled with dungeons, Warzones, epic group storylines crafting and socializing. All conected with an overall story that we can join or ignore.  It will be a chance to have a great questing experience along with what I like about MMO's. Interacting with others in an online game.

Which is my opinion only. It is what the OP asked for with the question of why. Everyone has their own ideas of what a MMO is or isn't. So there is no right or wrong answer here. Everyone is right when it comes to their own opinion. I guess the only way to find out if the game meets many opinions is the sub base. A year after release we should all find out if the 'why' was correct or not.

I could agree with you if I wanted to play ANOTHER fantasy MMO.  I don't though.  I am tired of fantasy MMOs.  I want a more SciFi based MMO where I don't have to be in a ship or giant robot most of the time and I think  BioWare did pretty good going for this setting.  Just a matter of opinion though.
