World of Warcraft: Using Kinect to Play

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

All hail innovation! A group of intrepid University of Southern California students have created and released FAAST, or the Flexible Action and Articulated Skeleton Toolkit compatible with the XBox Kinect. Using FAAST, folks can map body movements and gestures. To put the program through its paces, the group used FAAST to play World of Warcraft via Kinect. The results are AWESOME as the video shows a group member casting spells, moving the camera and more.

In this video, we show how FAAST can be used to control off-the-shelf video games such as World of Warcraft. Since these games would not normally support motion sensing devices, FAAST emulates keyboard input triggered by body posture and specific gestures. These controls can be dynamically configured for different applications and games.

Looks pretty cool but what kind of interface will you use for communicating with other players? After all these are supposed to be worlds that support socialisation! I understand that you could have a headset but would be force to leave it on and constantly hear the huffing and puffing of people as they run around (I know that right now movement is just based on leaning but the man at the end did say that he wants movement to be based on player movement eventually)!

    What do you all think?

Kinect have a mic integrated and recognize voice so that wouldn't be a problem.

Yeah wth? i mean what the hell were they thinking? WOW doesn't even have enough subs to make it a viable MMO  to sell kinect. They should target Vanguard players instead. ;p

Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

amazing! A justifiable excuse when experiencing spousal aggro (aggression) while gaming.

I'm exercising!  Playing WoW (or insert mmo here) is HEALTHY!

Love it! FANtastic concept. Talk about reality immersion. I'd love to see intricate gestures to cast various spells or perform special moves/actions. Great job!

of all the games in all the world they choose wow for their trial platform, not the best tool for a sales pitch. they should have used say call of duty instead or force unleashed.  maybe even eve-online. hell a better and more direc way of controlling eve would be awesome.

i can just imagine standing in a room with 60" hd screens  all around me  and above me  running eve, would be epic for pvp and corp managment.

this video is another demonstration of massive minds doing very small insignificant things for the wrong reasons.., lmao @ wow. i think maybe these boys have shares in wow!!

I am just wondering how many people would actually play a MMO that way. I know I wouldn't.

that douche at the end about childhood obesity and this as an excercise tool... really? wtf, this is an educated man?

"If your child is playing World of warcraft for six hours a day, you can tell them they have to use the kinect for one of those hours..."

IF YOUR CHILD IS PLAYING FOR SIX HOURS?

Look, if your CHILD is playing for six hours a day then you need to get him off the PC, not make him use this kind of crap instead of real activity. What kind of parent lets their kid play WoW for 6 hours a day?  I know they exist, but really... we should be telling them it's BAD for their kids to playing these games for 6 hours a day, not validating it by dressing this BS as real 'excercise'.

This is selling this to those parents that buy their kids Sunny D because 'it's a bit like juice and the advert  says it's good for them', instead of JUST BUYING THE JUICE.

Don't make them use this for 1 of their 6 hours, MAYBE cut their daily gaming time down to 3 hours and buy them a ball or bike, send them out, take them swimming, take up kite flying with them, feed them less crap, whatever... THATS the key to their obesity, not this junk.

A huge part of me fears so deeply for this generation.

Amen to that, in regards to all those who find it strange they would use a tool like this with WOW it shows why you are fans of gaming and not an innovator, what would be the point of wasting this technology on the few hundred thousand EVE online players when you can reach so many more simply by porting the feature to the biggest subscribed game in the industry?  Might be good for those half a million EVE fans but doesn't do much to continue the funding they may need.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

First of all, I don't actually agree that a child playing only video games leads to either a low life teen/adult or a dumb one. I have several real life examples that I've seen, but that's not why i'm replying to this.

Second, children are just rebellious. You can't control their every action, despite how hard you try. You literally need reversed locks, with prison  bars on their window to contain them. You just have to trust that they'll think through, and make the right decision. Teach them the best you can, but it's up to them to make the decision come crunch time.

What I'm saying is that you can't claim that bad parenting has lead a child to play a lot of video games. My parents use to try to get me to only play video games for an hour a day, but I didn't care. I wanted to play more, so I started thinking of clever ways I could play without them knowing. It's just part of being a child. Every human learns their lessons differently, and claiming that a lack of influence is the problem is bullshit.

I'm not suggesting that bad parenting is no different from good parenting, I'm just saying that good parenting only goes so far in a child's life - To enact the principles they've received from said parenting is their choice.

Kal... Everyone knows that Rogues do it from behind... ^^

This looks like fun, but can you imagine the results of doing all of that for an entire gaming session? Then again the next day and the next?  Let alone during an entire raid? The mind boggles.  The technology isn't quite there yet, but perhaps in a few more years.

Hey all , this is not a wow forum :P

This was meant as a proof of concept , if it can be done for wow it can be done for anything .......

It kinda makes sence that people in this forum will focus on an mmo , but try to see the big picture :)

I really like involving body motion with games , this IS an evolution .  Think creatively , like controlling your computer with gestures WITHOUT touching the screen , this will be faster than mouse and makes a lot of sence when using huge screens , also this will help in some cases of disability .

Lots of fun these wow comments tho :P
