    Actually, quite a few friends of mine used to play a variety of games on AOL, it was not un-common to pay from 500$ to 1000$ for a month of gaming.

    That is indeed quite amazing, no wonder AOL shut down all it's gaming services once the internet went to unlimited access, but they did have 5-6 years of monopoly on the market.
