The death of console gaming or just longer lasting console systems?

jpnolejpnole Member UncommonPosts: 1,698

Came across an article discussing the lack of any new gaming consoles on the horizon. Think there's anything to it? Are consoles systems just going to have a longer shelf life?

Change the name of the topic please.

The article talks about the death of the 5 years console cycle and that is true. Consoles are getting so expensive to make today that 5 years lifespan just is too little, 7 or even 10 years will be the future.

But both consoles and PC gaming are here to stay.

Yep only the cycle of new consoles every 5 years are dead. With the use of motion controls this life cycle will be extended another 5-7 years. Otherwise it's here to stay for now.

There is no reason to change the topic name.

Though I do agree with you that a five year lifespan is just too little these days - I think it's going to be about ten years. Usually we would have heard about something in development by now if there was anything.

Put through the personal paces of my crippled fingers.

Done - and reworded the post too :)

Yep, this is something us gamers have been discussing for some time. There really isn't a great deal of room for growth for the next gen systems to really be next gen. So instead whats happening is a bit of back tracking. The 360 and PS3 have introduced "upgrades" to the usable peripherals to the systems in order to extend the life of the systems. I'd actually bank on seeing some mouse/navi love on the not so distant horizon as well once things die down on the Move/Kinect front.

The down side to this though is that the PS3 becomes the front runner. The reason for that though is that we have pretty much seen the extent of what the 360 can do. Even Bungie noticed this when they made Halo Reach. The PS3 however hasn't really been pushed to the limits though. Early on it seemed like the 360 backed the right horse tech and decision wise and if these systems were just 5 year systems then 360 would have won hands down. With them vying for a 10 year lifespan though the PS3 has ended up backing the right horse as the tech and decisions they made are more viable long term than the 360.

Next gen at this point in time just doesn't seem overly viable as far as consoles go. This of course leaves some nice room for growth PC wise.

    Console Gaming isn't pure dead.

In fact its lost some ground due to all the changes. No one suspected Handhelds and smartphone gaming would take off the way they did.

I find this to be the worse console generation. Consoles had to mutate and become something else. Now they are not full consoles or full PCs either. I find they are between everywhere and nowhere. This generation is a learning experience for the industry and I have a feeling it will come back with a vengeance next generation since the last four years have been devoted to developing Game Engines for Next Generation Consoles.

I can only hope for the best, but expect the worse.

Consoles will not die infact it shows to be the new medium for multiplayer online.

Less idiots who can cheat and hack , thats ruining a lot of games. Consoles are infact freaking easy to pirate :( but then again updates nowadays garantees.

That your pirated free software wont work without another update.

Console has become mainstream in the world cause basically almost everybody has 1 in there home versus only 1 in your street has one .

Whats the advangetage of consoles is that software developers will get atleast sureway of income , before the pirated crap hit the internet .

dont think PC will die cause we are getting MMORPG and paid subscribing stuff .

the hand held is getting popular also cause of FREE pirated crap . Now dont forget once you remove the pirate software from consoles , the console themself sells a lot less .

New games in the stores unless really brand hits dont sell as well . Anyway the score and prices of games is nowadays this every copy sold is expected to be pirated 2 times . sorry console game prices gone up and will keep going up.

Cause its the way things work , now if you can spare the money , then console gaming is beter for FPS RTS and other stuff , cause less hackers and exploiters and cheaters. If you are not able to spent money , well then pc is the best alternative .

Edit cause of wall of text , what is happening here :(

My opinion is that the consoles are having a cold war on who can survive the longest without really taking each other down.

Sooner or later, someone's going to flop or concede. Just look at Nokia, Sega and Atari. N-Gage and the home consoles in the later 80's and 90's.

Honestly, I think they're going to run out of ideas sooner or later and re-emulate the PC to make the identical peripherals in a future console. We've seen most of these peripherals and it's derivatives (we as in the people who can remember playing Super Nintendo). The light guns and the power gloves we bought to totally geek out on our home entertainment systems, is it likely we're going the same route here with the Kinect and wireless technology?

I've seen the inside of a 360 and to the amateur eye, it's a cheap PC in a white box. No doubt they're making proprietary devices to only fit into their appropriate consoles. Sooner or later, we will come back to the 80's where one company will make devices for another and more tech from computers devoted into these devices we ALREADY own. The PC will prevail as "the ultimate home console ever" then in brackets "...of all time."

The console market is big enough to have three consoles running successfully. Noone is going to just die out. I look at it as a pro that this console generation has been extended a few years. I like my current games and I fear neither Microsoft or Sony will support backwards compatibility because they could make more money just re-releasing old games over a downloadable service, in turn double dipping it's customers... Not really on a rush to see that happen.

    Playing: Rift, LotRO
    Waiting on: GW2, BP

If anything consoles are more of the future. Less hassels than a pc, less expensive and the PS3 offers great blue-ray movies. Heck, last night I rented the movie predators on my 360 and I was able to relax comfortably on my recliner instead of having to be subjected to my computer chair for 2 hours just to watch it. Also, the 360 is trying to get a cable tv service. I think right there that tells you that consoles will have a much greater shelf life right there. Consoles may be a stop behind in computer hardware but they are preet stable and you definitely get your money's woth out of a console.

Methinx consoles and PC's will eventually merge into the same product, somewhere in the middle.

Though I do think it's possible that consoles will evolve into more of a service, like cable, where you'll just pay monthly and get access to certain games, and PPV- errr... PP-play for premium games.  I think there's already a system trying to do something like that.

The fact that the PS2 still has such a valid market proves that the 5 year rule is a falacy tbh.

and the Wii proves you dont need to be cutting edge in terms of gfx etc to sell units if you have the right marketing.

Looking at these two facts, it's no wonder that Sony and MS see another few years in their current systems.

The early success of kinect is only backing this up.

The evolution of games has slowed a bit, that's true. Maybe is the fault of the economic crisis. Since peoples aren't willing to spend more, researchers can't spend millions on new researches. Maybe technology isn't growing as fast as before. The cpu for example, with the current technology reached its peak at roughly 4ghz. That's why we're seeing multi core cpu and not upgrades for a long time now.

Yeah, Microsoft is trying to get a cable service for the 360. It isn't a bad idea but years ago consoles were primarily for gaming. Now, It seems they want more of a casual social aspect for the consoles instead of focusing on gaming. I personally won't need a cable service for my console. I just use my console for games and movies, thats all I need it for.

It's been said that video games are the only art form that are limited by technology.

    cool

Since Kinect and Move just launched I would be shocked if the next Sony or Microsoft system was announced in the next 3 years and honestly the graphics on both machines are acceptable compared to your AVERAGE PC users' capabilities.

Sure, they may not match what a top of the line PC can do right now in the select few games that push the limit, but that's a very small amount of users with a small amount of software that outperforms the consoles.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

Really even PC graphics haven't advanced since about 2005. They've just got more efficient.

when i first saw longer lasting consoles i laughed my head off till i realized you meant retail cycle not actual console durability. because ps3,ps2,xbox,3600,gamecube,wii cant even come close to durability the classics like atari 2600,sega genesis ect.

  • EricDanieEricDanie Member UncommonPosts: 2,238

AFAIK the PS3 still has untapped hardware potential, it's just a shame that like happens with PCs, most games port based on the lowest common denominator, so they don't work on a PC/PS3 version that fully utilizes their hardware.

With the introduction of motion controls the X360 and PS3 should remain in the market for at least 2 more years IMO.

Nintendo, on the other hand, should be getting ready to unveil a Wii successor, at least if they want to keep their customers interested, though they can easily postpone that if they focus on their first-party games like the recently released Donkey Kong, Metroid Other M, Kirby Epic Yarn, Goldeneye and 2011 Zelda, Mario Game Number 989834 and whatever else they haven't revealed yet (there's a lot of good IPs they could be working on).

  • Pcgamer81Pcgamer81 Member Posts: 186

thats the problem with nintendo they use IP so much like mario and zelda that there games are not as good and appealing as they use to be. i loved NES,SNES and N64. gamecube was okay but not as good as PS2 or xbox. just seems nintendo is not as good as it once was.

My Dreamcast, PS1, and launch day PS2 still run.

Ya know they have more moving parts so they're more likely to fail, but I got decades old machines right beside my Atari and ColecoVision. So.. Take care of your stuff.

That is a possibilty but since the days of C-64 and the first consoles have there always been 2 kinds of people: The ones that want a full computer and the ones that only care about the games.

It is not the controls, you can run a Ps3 or Xbox 360 controller on a PC or a mouse on a console, it is about people.

That might change but I doubt that will be before PS4 and X-box 720 comes out.

Other systems like playing through your cable might compete with consoles but I think PC gaming will stay for a longtime and so will consoles.

Many people have predicted a thing that is a mix between a PC, a TV and a console, a all in one that makes the other stuff useless but there have been talk about stuff like that since the 80s and we are not closer to it now than then, not much at least.

Consoles will have to last longer since they cost so much money to develop and that might boost the PC gaming somewhat but I see no huge changes. PCs might however stand just in front of a revolution, soon will you be able to have a huge combined ram and harddrive and that will affect all PC games a lot, no need to worry about a limit for how much memory you use at a certain point, no need for instances. But consoles will get the same thing even if it take longer time.

I still see people playing on Pcs and consoles 2025, they might have different brands than the stuff that is out today but time moves forward and very little changes. Better graphics, some different kinds of games and many new features for the old games but there will still be people playing fighting games on consoles and FPS games on PCs.

Well, you need a bit of luck too, I gave away my old Amiga to the neighbor kids last time I moved and it still worked like a clock. But I know people who had very bad luck as well, I don't think it is so simple as taking care of the stuff.

Some people are very careful and their stuff breaks anyways, other treat their stuff like crap and it still lasts almost forever.

Wasn't this obvious when M$ announced Kinect and gave their reasoning for releasing it instead of an entirely new system?

In any case...this is a good time to be a PC gamer IMO. The motion control will turn out to be a big turn off for alot of developers and so they'll try to stray away from that and do digital distribution on PC since PCs stay steady with updated technology.

    Woohoo!
