EDIT: I've reopened the forums and deleted the AoC theme (link). I'm doing some more groundwork, but this is the best place we have, for now.
EDIT: Had to rename the thread, since the last one was too cryptic. I hope you don't mind.
EDIT: No bargaining with mods, eh? Oh well.
What is The Path Ahead?
The Path Ahead was a project, that started around a year ago on this very forum. It's aim was to gather like-minded players, who were interested in certain things in MMOs, but couldn't get them, because of the crippling social issues a lot of MMOs had. We thought, that if we banded together and forming our own little community, we could overcome everything.
It worked. For around a month it really worked. We got together, tried a couple of different games, picked Vanguard and actually played it. It was a lot of fun. People genuinly enjoyed themselves. We had over a hundred people interested and something close to fifty, who actually registred, and played with us.
And then... It fell apart. I admit, this was entirely my fault. When we became a guild, it lacked direction, focus, aim. And I, myself, kind of lost focus, unsure, what the original intent even was.
It all went downhill from there. We regathered people, tried played Allods Online, b ut were forced to quit, due to mind-boggling Cash Shop prices. We regathered people yet again, switched to Age of Conan and then... Hard to say, what cane then, but needless to say, it failed yet again.
I generally gave up on MMOs then, switching to single-player games. Then RL issues came in, I got married... Not as interesting, as you'd think. But the point is, for the best part of the year, I simply waited.
And now... Now, I think, is time for us to try again. It's time to stop moping, whining and self-pitying. It's time for us to take matters into our own hands.
What is our goal?
To create a community of gamers, who are tired of the more modern design of MMOs and would prefer to do things old-school style. Instead of facing the grim reality of being unable to play older and less-known titles, because of the lack of other players, we gather together and do it our way. We group, we socialize, we explore, maybe even roleplay a little. All the things we were denied, because we were scattered and broken. We can unite, once again, and enjoy the journey, not the destination.
This is The Path Ahead. And I can only hope it works this time.
P.S. You can view the original thread here.
This will be the planning stage. Seeing how many people we can gather, how long it takes for mods to move the thread, et cetera.
Who might be interested?
This is our core audience. People who are tired of playing alone, people, who had enough of games, that punish them, for what they like, people, whio have no one to play games they actually want with.
You find the chat dead, during downtime? Fellow players started turning into mimes? Then we will welcome you with open arms.
People, who take the game at their own pace, who like to explore, discover and see for themselves. People, who can take a break from levelling and just "try and see what's over there".
This is not on our top priority list, but I would love to start a small RP sub-group, within our own.
We will attempt to experience everything the game has to offer - all dungeons, all tasks, all zones. Every single little minute detail, that we can get our hands on. To milk the game, for all it's worth.
What games are we considering?
We'll be doing this elimination-style, untiul only one game remains.
Let's be honest here, VG is an excellent game, that needs a lot more love. And bettrer yet, it's not that well-known, making the experience fresh. THere's everything you need in an MMO - grouping, social tools, meaningfull guild progression... It's still quite buggy, however and it tends to have a lot of slowdown and glitches and the in-game population is really, REALLY low. However, wit our kind of a project, this shouldn't be such an issue.
One of the biggest MMOs ever made and one of the best grouping MMOs to boot. If we take it easy and do it progression-style, we'll be in there playing for months, if not years. However, the graphics, the UI, it's all "meh". Not a lot of people like that.
This one is probably the most solo-friendly on the list. However there are gobs of grouping content, and if we can force ourselves to band together and take it easy, this can be a good choice.
Lot's of content, one of the best PvP systems in play and meaningful levelling. Don't know that much about htis one to comment, really.
Seems to be one of the best PvE-centric MMOs out there. Again, don't know enough.
This is THE group PvE game of the Post-EQ period. You literally can't do anything alone.
One of the more unique games of the decade. Could be an interesting choice, at the very least.
Have my reservations about that one. It's a good game, sure, but a little bit too-PvP centric. We'll see, what people think.
If you have anything to add or know games, that I've missed - fire away.
