Game Ratings

Why is it every time a new game comes out the next top 20 games all lose ratings points? image

I'm happy unless we get the "Gld wrz vs (Insert game here)." topics. All 600 of them. ::::39::

The GW vs topics are nothing. You should have seen the EQII vs WoW topics that we had last summer. At least 2 a day.

Yeah that was amazing, heh. He's not joking either. There really were at least two a day.

In short this is because our rating system uses a positive-only curve.  It always increases all the games scores based on a value determined by the highest "natural score".  Because GW is getting a "natural" or uncurved score of about 8.5 the system finds the distance between that score and 10 (which is roughly 9.2) and then finds out the multiplier to get 8.5 to a 9.2 (which is roughly 1.08).   Then it multiplies all the games by this amount.   This just spreads all the games upwards...in other words no games are harmed by this - we just "zoom" into the real scores to spread them out.

GW is effecting this curve by getting a really high "natural" score - in effect it is killing the curve.  WoW did the same thing when we first debuted it - I am guessing this will stabilize in time image

    1) You shouldn't allow people to change ratings so often.

    2) You shouldn't show the rating of a new game until a month after release.

    3) The "all 1's" votes and the "all 10's" votes for a game should count for much less than the mixed reviews, since these are probably not honest ratings.

Why this system? Why not just show what people's votes average out in? Because if I understand it, the ratings we see are not the ratings we voted on.

And I agree, people that give a game 10 on every front or a 1 on every front should not count. Kind of hard to check though.

We used to do that and basically all the games went from 5.0 to 6.5 - that is just not very detailed to look at.  So in a sense we take a magnifying glass and "zoom" into this.  Your votes still count for the same exact amount - we just amplify it so to speak.

We have future plans for some really cool rating systems - but right now that is not our top priority - we are trying to focus on new forums and a completely new game list (which should feature a new rating system).

Will that new forum have a "see all posts by user" button so you know where exactly you posted yesterday and don't have to try and remember each thread name?
