Ton's of hits on this topic with various view points. As for me I think I'll take the "wait and see" approach because I really do want to see what they have in store for us and really don't care about other people's expectations for this title.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
"By all accounts and looking at everything that we know now, it seems like Bioware is trying to attain major success in the same way that Blizzard did with World of Warcraft. Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, the designers have looked at the broad strokes of what has worked in the MMO world over the last six years (since WoW) and have incorporated it into the game’s design."
This is the problem in so many new MMO's. The theory that simply copying and pasting what has worked in other games onto their game, and slapping on a shiny new coat of pixels, will translate into the game being successful has not proven true for the last few games to have tried this. Really, why would someone already playing a game with this blueprint switch to another game with roughly the same experience? Why would someone who has invested his/her time leveling and building their character(s), and is generally happy with their game, completely start that same grind over on a different game?
With those questions in mind, I just don't believe that TOR will have multiple-million subscriptions using this model. That's not to say the game will not experience success, but I surmise that the people over at Blizzard won't be losing any sleep when TOR launches.
Have you played it? If not, how can you know? You may suspect, but nothing more.
As the article clearly says, it swings both ways. Haters and fanboys alike should take a deep breath and just chill. It is too early to say much about the game beside the obvious.
The reason no WoW clone has worked is because no game has actually been released that is a clone of WoW. You may have a game that plays like it, but doesn't look like it. Or a game that looks like it, but doesn't play like it. Or a game that is very similar to WoW, but has a PvP slant. Or a game that plays exactly like WoW but has realistic, processor-straining graphics. The "WoW clone" nonsense is just something that people throw around without thinking. WoW was just a highly stylized, polished, and ultra-accessible by-product of Everquest's success.
SW:ToR is perhaps the first game that can actually be called a WoW clone. It has the insane budget, the established IP, the stylized graphics, and the similar gameplay. If this game fails, THEN you can rant about how copying WoW never works. As it stands, this community is full of *#($ and has absolutely no idea what it's talking about.
Generally I hate your colums and writeups. I have to say, this time I think you nailed it. The rant is spot on and 100% accurate from what I have seen and played. It's already very smooth and alot more polished than 80% of the mmo's into their 1 year state from what I've experienced. I personally think it's going to be great, but I've been burned to many times in the past to bet the farm on it.
The biggest thing anyone can take away from this (ESPECIALLY on mmorpg.com) is: If you hate the design, animations and themepark: walk away and stop bitching. It is flat out NOT gonna change. thats the way it is, thats the game they decided to make. period. Ranting and bitching about it doesnt help anyone and just makes you look pissy and spoiled. Just find another game.
Thanks. Again, good article for a change. enjoyed it.
Couldn't agree with this more!
I know for a fact that I am going to love this game. It's smooth and polished, it's a story driven experience, it's Star Wars in a time period that fascinates me, and last but not least it's by BioWare.
But, as harvest writes if you hate the direction of the game, hate that it's a themepark, hate vioceover, hate the fact that it is story driven, hate the tunnel shooter, hate the graphics and animations - then by all means move on and don't buy the game. BioWare isn't going to change their game for you, and nor should they.
I believe that this game is targetting new subs, BioWare fans, and Star Wars fans more than it is traditional MMORPG players. It won't kill WoW, but I believe it will be responsible for bringing more new people to the genre than any game since WoW.

doesn't really matter what sort of report this game gets star wars fanatics will buy it no matter what and only time will tell if the server population dies off and the game goes FTP with item mall OR becomes a success and thrive on universe expansion.
I really like what you said about the haters and the obsessers. Being a person who looks at SWTOR with no real opinion either way (because it is in development and I don't know if I'll like it or not), I agree with what you said. Everyone is quick to acknowledge there are a lot of haters and trolls that are quick to destroy ANY forum about this game, but people fail to realize that the obsessers (basically, anyone who "knows" this game will be awesome and anyone who thinks otherwise is a hater, troll and all-around jerk), are just as guiltly.
The forums would be a nicer place if people just took a step back and said: "I don't know enough about this game to determine whether or not it is -awful- or -awesome-. And, even if I did, out of respect for others, I won't make a big deal out of it."
I'll leave the irrelevant dig about our revenue structure alone.
That wasn't irrelevant, it was a fact.
I'm board with you Kyleran, except for this statement.
Facts can be irrelevant. Like the fact that I ate french fries for dinner is completely irrelevant to this conversation. I have to agree, though, the way this website pays its bills is irrelevant to whether Jon is confused over what speculating is. Speculating is not a stated fact, but an implied opinion. There is no reason why we must preface our opinions with IMO. We should be smart enough to realize what an opinion is. I think they teach that pretty early on in elementary school.
Ah, but you are omitting my preamble to this statement, where I asked what the purpose of this website (and others like it) except to generate discussion about gaming topics?
Well, it is a fact the entire purpose of everything this web site does/posts etc is to get us to come visit it. Why? So the site can sell advertising to people who want our money.
At its core, Jon was basically decrying people "whining and complaining" about SWTOR, calling them trolls (I hate when people do this as you can tell) when in fact, they indirectly pay his salary.
Sure, I suppose if the "trolls" anger too many people that they refuse to visit the site we'd have a problem but it seems to me anything on the site including articles like the one Jon wrote can have that effect, (so they say) but in the end, like a good train wreck, most of them can't help but come back and watch what's going on.

The OP does not take into account that SWTOR had a great following on this site and was top of the hype list for a long time. It's not so much about hate than it is BioWares serious lack not showing us of the mmorpg features of this game.
They really think that they are going to take many away from WOW, lol they can keep dreaming.
How many more times are we going to hear about freaking story or the same old dry line of "we have that but we can't talk about it".
Seems to many that BioWare/EA have no intention of showing us the mmorpg mechanic's of this game that has been in development for nearly five years until we part with some cash.
The fanboys will be the downfall of this game by agreeing with anything BioWare serves up even after all the crap we the mmorpg gamer have had to put up with over the last five years.
What the fanboys are missing is BioWare already have their money no matter what. The game could turn out to be a stinking pile of poo but the BioWare faith full will still buy,ea know this and so does bioware.
They have to convince the mmorpg gamer who is not a bioware fanatic or a star wars geek but just wants a great mmorpg to play.
As it stands now SWTOR is not that game. When the loyal fan base is getting ripped by EA/Bioware by paying a sub and paying for content because BioWare/EA need to make the money back ,just remember that they bought it on themselves by not questioning BioWare.

After laying out $150 million BioWare will do what they are damn well told, don't kid yourself into thinking otherwise.
I'll state what this column isn't.... it isn't making me want SW:ToR any less.
After Neverwinter Nights I never even bothered to look at previews of gameplay for BioWare games, I just bought them and haven't regreted it one bit. BioWare has consistently produced some of the best RPGs of all time. In my book they can't fail, and they won't fail with SW:ToR no matter how much people try to make it look like it inevitable that ToR will crash&burn.
ToR doesn't need 1 million subs, it needs a loyal base of BioWare and SW fans, and they will get it if they don't botch up the game completely. Which based on their previous accomplishments (even though they're single player games) doesn't seem at all likely to happen.
If it does happen I'll stand corrected and admit BioWare finally failed at something, but that's when and if it happens.
No point in being the bearer of bad news that aren't news at all to begin with.
Stating that this game won't be a genre game changer when at the same time you're complaining that they don't show gameplay is a huge contradiction.
I'm still getting it on pre-order no matter what, and I won't be the only one. If I'm going to throw my money away, oh well... I guess I'll have to wait and see. But I'll stay optimistic at least until launch day.

yep entire article about taking a few (out of many) shortcommings this game has and creating somes sort of excuse for it.
Those bright-colored screenshots of VERY-cartoony-looking characters do not inspire trust in this game too...especially that one with overmuscular(seriously looks like WWE wrestler) malak-clone-gorilla jumping in the air....
Wrong.
The article doesn't present any of these thigns as shortcomings, merely a look at what it is. I understand that YOU think they are shortcomings, but that doesn't mean that they are. Please don't put words in my mouth.
It does bring something new to the table so that is just bs in itself. No other game has vo storylines where you can choose your destiny. AoC vo was a joke and only lasted for the beginner level and the choices were meaningless.
I like themepark, I like star wars, I like VO... I have played the game and at low levels it is not boring, it feels like you are at higher levels when you start the game out. That's just how good the story is, leave you waiting to see what is next.
For everyone, hater or fanboi: play it as a single player game and you'll love it.
^^ This. Though it doesn't say a lot for the longevity of the game, there's no doubt in my mind that it'll be fun for at least one play through on each side. I don't play MMOs for social interaction anyway. I play because I beat single player games in one or two days tops, and generally MMOs have more content and options than single player games so I can buy one, play my free month and feel like I've got a good return on my investment.
I played it ... after that, all these columns became futile.
It's boring ... and it's boring because i played an exact copy of swtor for to long.
I played the game aswell. Starter Area called Hutta. Was not boring for me, everyone has their own preference. I prefer this kind of a game. People on here don't like AION. Well I like AION, people on here don't like WAR? Well I like WAR.
People on here rant and rave about how great EVE is , well I find it boring and a snooze fest. GW1 is hailed as such an awesome game, it was a boring co-op game. SWG pre cu was sooo much better. I prefer the NGE. More content is better gameplay, tbh.
People have their own opinion of what is boring and not... I could make a huge list of games that are top rated on this site , go play them and /yawn. Fallen Earth , Darkfall, EvE, all fall into that category.
“that anyone who says Macbeth in a theatre is treated.”
From the Op’s post should that not be…..’in a theatre is dated.’
Anyway I think Mr Wood has hit the nail on the head here and many of us have already been saying it. STOR is a SF MMO, but not as you know it Jim. I doubt anyone is going to be able to tell if this is for them before the reviews. I see elements of a traditional MMO, lobby game and solo Rpg in it, it will be unique.
I still fall on the ‘it won’t be for me’ side. But as I say until we see some reviews and hear from people who have played it After the game launches I won’t know.
For everyone, hater or fanboi: play it as a single player game and you'll love it.

Oh yea, sure you can play it as a singleplayer game, but once you realize that it is an MMO and you have to group and that there are other players running around you and the game is all open persistant world, even the story line takes place in open persistant world. Then you will start to play it as the MMO it was meant to be played as.

Hmmm interesting this article went about twelve pages in and with all the speculation about why games suck nowadays and how this game is or isn't this or that you are the first person to claim to have played the game and to also give a sense of what it played like. There was an interesting post yesterday about how AOC was roasted because the voice over work ended after Tortage, and for some strange reason it is as if all those people quit MMORPG because you rarely if ever hear all the "fanboi rave" about this.
And lastly this is for those wo are trying to play the fence on the issue of fanboi vs. troll.
The only topic I can see as a "fanboi" topic are those saying ummm guys we really don't know anything yet so let's let them work. Or simply point out that some of the folks with actual in game experience thought the game play was good and not worth all the hate it's getting.
This entire article has turned into one of those sibling rivalries where the parents just say "to hell with it" and try to chastise both children instead of getting to the root of the problem.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Most of the article was pretty good and accurate, accept that part where the guy tells you "you aren't going to like this game do not buy it"
the game hasn't even came out yet, how do you know what people will like and what they wont like.
It's not gonna be a sandbox and it is not gonna be swg 2.. It will be very similiar to wow maybe with a WAR/DAoc like pvp system (since mythic is working on the pvp), but with alot of focus on story and vo and choices.
I like the article, not sure if this guy is just trying to bash TOR or trying to point out that it is not gonna be all these boring things that people like in a game. All the sandbox games I have played lately, are /yawn.. Thank god it wont be that.
If I like a sandbox game it is because of nostalgia and that alone, if I try to play nexus or swg pre cu now I find myself bored to tears. Maybe back then I liked it, but that was because it was ALL we had available.
The only topic I can see as a "fanboi" topic are those saying ummm guys we really don't know anything yet so let's let them work. Or simply point out that some of the folks with actual in game experience thought the game play was good and not worth all the hate it's getting.

I don't have to prove that I played the game the name "Sungodra" speaks for itself amongst the TOR fan base and anyone who knows , knows I played the game.
All I can say is that I liked the game, I didn't find it boring, it was fun from the very beginning and engaging story. The overwhelming feedback from the others who have played it was mostly positive and they liked the game aswell.
Of course it may have had a few problems, but they are working on them. As they do all games before they come out, but this game still has so many months away before release. We need to wait and see what the state of the game is during open beta. Then you can make a substantial arguement of what needs and does not need to be done in order to bring the game up to par.
MMORPG.com never ceases to amaze with their articles that say what everyone already knows. I think Jon has just gained a rank and is now "Admiral Obvious". This article can be summed up by saying "Some people like stuff. Other people don't. The people that like stuff will like it, and the people that don't like it won't." Good thing this wasn't printed on paper.
Sigh. I do like Jon's writing style, but the content of this article just seems...unnecessary.
1) Love how this article pissed off some of the SWToR haters *and* some of the fanbois. Guess it's true, the people balanced in the middle really do get pissed on from both sides.
2) Will SWToR be thought of as innovative? Everquest seems innovative, the largest game to bring 3d graphics to the MMO genre. Isn't SWToR doing the same thing but for audio? Everything will be fully voiced, no more quest text, unless you want text...
Also for the first time in any MMO I've seen the combat actually looks somewhat realistic. Blades are actually hitting each other and blocking, dodging. Flinching and wounded animations play differently depending on where the blaster bolt hits the character. The game mechanics track where projectiles are landing. For the first time when I see two people in combat in an MMO it actually looks visually interactive real combat, not just two avatars individually chopping away at each others hp box...

"When it comes to GW2 any game is fair game"

Unbelievable as it may seem, some people need reality checks like this.
Agree! but...
