In his latest Star Wars: The Old Republic column, MMORPG.com Community Manager Michael Bitton takes a look at the Smuggler class and its two Advanced Classes. The Smuggler was recently and prominently featured on the official site, using it as an example of how the Advanced Class system will work in SWTOR. Mike breaks down the information revealed in that revelation and offers thoughts about what it all means. Check it out!
In designing the game’s Advanced Classes, Bioware made sure to address some of the more popular traditional MMO playstyles, such as the highly sought after (and often elusive!) healer, while also adding some of their own spice to the mix by creating variants on these archetypes. For example, a “Vanguard” Trooper can tank, even though he is a ranged class, rather atypical for most traditional MMOs. Of course, the Trooper isn’t the only tank option on the Republic side, as the more traditional melee tank can be found in the Jedi Knight’s Guardian Advanced Class.

Currently, I am mostly interested in the Imperial Agent advanced classes, I need more information to choose between the stabby-stabby-stab and the sniper.
On the republic side, the Jedi Shadow (Jedi Counselor advanced) sounds quite interesting, even tho' I would also like to get more information about the support side.
The article was quite interesting to read, and gave alot more information about Smuggler's advanced classes, and I got a pretty good picture how the advanced classes will "go on". Practically this means that we will have alot more classes than just four, amirite?
Well I know imma be a GunSlinger that's for sure. (at least when I decide to play a smuggler)
Veritas Vos Liberabit- The truth will set you free.
I'm planning on playing a Sith Inquisitor with the Sith Assassin(I think that is what the melee specced is called) as my advanced class.
Saberstaff + Stealth + Force = Win!
ALL OF THEM! Muahahahah! Seriously though, this just seems to lend credit to a very nice replayability factor, especially for those of us who enjoy ALT play. I cannot wait to sink tons of hours into this game.
Damn the gunslinger looks awesome! I wonder if each advance class will have a signature look that's linked to the decisions you make while your story unfolds. Kinda like dark choices will lead down the scoundrel path, while light choices lead down the gunslinger path.Well at least It's a tell-tale sign that Bioware is trying to give their players a lot of options to work with. And this bit of info is making it harder for me to stick with making a trooper first. Dangit!

I am a bit of an altaholic so I will likely try most of them depending on how many character slots you get. Hopefully you get enough to play through each major character type (so 8 or more). That write up really made me like the smuggler class but I will probably lean towards the gunslinger.
While I definately want a Jedi or Sith character the two I think I will take a swing at first are Bounty Hunter and Smuggler base classes.
most likely i'll be a juggernaut.
I guess it all depends how many alts we're going to be allowed but I'm pretty sure I'm going to try for one smuggler alt and probably go for scoundrel.
I try and tie all my alts into a backstory so aside from having a 'burn' alt to play and recycle they'd have to 'fit in' with a Republic leaning mafia-esque 'family' lead by couple of grey jedi.
Consular, Knight, Smuggler, Bounty Hunter and maybe Inquisitor are top of my list so far, mostly because I have a feel for the characters I'd set them up as.
Really wanted my consular to dual-wield though.
D
Trooper Commando, no doubt
MARAUDER! hells yeah baby, then a sith assasin or scorc
You missed one of the most interesting things that was in the article. The Smuggler can be a Stealth Healer when you put points in both Scrapper and Sawbone trees.
I heartily concur with elocke on this one. I will definately be playing all 16 advanced classes as I am a complete altaholic and completionist. This will probably mean I'll need two accounts as I can't see BioWare giving us 16 character slots but I don't mind forking out some extra cash if I truly enjoy the game.

"Of the two, the Gunslinger side of the Smuggler sounds a great deal more interesting and a bit more in line with what I expect when thinking of a Smuggler. I have to admit I’m a bit torn between both Gunslinger paths though. Hopefully pursuing a hybrid path is a viable option in Star Wars: The Old Republic. And yes, I realize that Georg mentioned that players could go the “Stealth Healer” route by spending points in the Scrapper and Sawbones paths. Whether or not this ends up being viable in the game is obviously unknown at this time."
Did I now?
I really do want to see a sniper having to shoot up close when grouping, its not really a concept that fits group play well.
I'm completely interested in the scoundrel path, as I'm a player that likes a lot of range in my characters. I'd love to be able to heal mates if need be, but also do some damage from cover, or coming out of stealth.
I'll definitely be the person who creates a hybrid class whether or not min/maxers think its viable.
Well since jedi/sith are classes i wanna start as im gonna try out sith warrior tank and jedi counsolor healer, Ill try the sith inquisitor healer and the jedi knight gaurdian also. I like to tank and heal. The dw lightsaber thing to me is neat but i perfer the double bladed one on the counsolor.
I also disagree. I find the weapon types a needed part of an mmo. what if tanks could all dw whatever weapon they wanted. the balance of the game would be thrown totally out of whack. I think its just biowares way of distinguishing one class from another.
Also Jedi knights and sith warriors are the kinds ud expect to have dw capability t=hanks to anakin skywalker, This also to me isnt that big a deal whats to be disappointed about? really a dw healer or a double bladed jedi knight to me isnt very important.
Seems to me u should still be playing sw galaxies. If thats the game all sw gamers supposedly want why is only 300 k maybe playing that game? go play that or eve online. I for one am excited. and keeping a certain type of weapon or ability to dw to one spec is part of all mmos.
From fury being a dw and frost dks beign dw. to unholy and arms being a 2 handed spec. the diffrence here is they keep it to a class specific weapons. wow does this also with who can use dagger, swords, axes etc.
The plan is to start with the Jedi Knight, Consular and Smuggler. When I sat in the theater for A New Hope at 10 years old. I instantly wanted to live out the fantasy of Luke and become a Jedi. So now I can bring out that kid in me again and finally live the story through the game. So Jedi Knight will be it. But I also want to experience the Obi-Wan Kenobi story, as well as Han.
But a lot may depend on the community and the MMO features that make it into the game. It I find a good guild to join while questing and running flashpoints. I may end up grouping and enjoying my main. So I will start out with my plan of alts and see what happens.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?
R.A.Salvatore
I am looking forward to playing the Vanguard, but of course I don't want to rule out the other advanced trooper class before seeing it.
What, I can't be a Bard? Screw This!.
"Train by day, Joe Rogan podcast by night, all day!"
As far as being a "Stealth Healer"... I can definitely see that being VERY viable in PvP.......the possibilities are endless with the thought of that! The Smuggler has been my first choice since they first announced it, but I really don't know which AC Smuggler I'm going to be....I'll have to decide that after I get into the game and see where it takes me.
Trooper Commando.
I was a machine gunner/ tank killer back in my Army days. I can't wait to mow the lawn and pop Sith armor! Once a grunt always a grunt. lol
Ing the Conqueror
*groan* As much as I love specializations, I already can hear endless debates with people who don't invite you because "you totally mis-skilled your char" or "we don't take any Smuggler along with THAT sort of skills". Hated that in WOW and LOTRO like the pox.
I sincerely hope the skill trees are balanced enough that every path is viable. And they don't add any "inspect" ability. If people want to know about my char, they have to ASK.
I'll be playing the Sith Marauder. Nothing like dual-wielding twin lightsabers.
Imperial Agent - Operative
Sith Inquisitor - Assassin
Have always enjoyed stealth classes.
Sith Sorcerer
I'm not a big healer guy, but I like lightning and Range Damage. So even if my original plan to specialize into healing doesn't work out I have a back up.
Smuggler Gunslinger
I'm a big Ranged Damage guy, and smuggler offers the humor I love in story.
Bounty Hunter Powertech
Again similar to that of the Sorcerer. I plan on being a Ranged Tank, but if it doesn't work out it seems I could be able to be a Ranged DPS.
Trooper commando
Ranged DPS, and overall coolness factor of the Trooper.
