Everquest nostalgia. Edit, Nostalgia. What are your memories?

BanlistedBanlisted Member Posts: 22

So it's kind of late, and I have been pondering going back to EQ, and once i saw a few EQ sites and pictures all of the memories flooded my head once more. Probably one of my fondest memories was dieing in the gorge of king xorbb. I was a level 11 wood elf warrior named Aladamari. I had recently been roaming around orc hill killing as many orcs as i possibly could for exp and loot. I also picked up some crushbone belts which i sold for 1pp per belt to buy myself a nice new banded armour suit. After getting my great new suit of armour i ventured back to orc hill and ended up near clan crushbone entrance as i slaughtered all that stood in my path with my half elf ranger parter, whos name unfortunately i dont remember. He then asked me how much money i had and at the time it was maybe 13pp. He invited a high level druid into our group and told me to give him 10pp, with little hesitation i gave up the coin because the druid said he wouldnt teleport me with my new found friend unless i gave it up. After giving him the 10pp and watching the druid cast his teleport spell i ended up in East Karana. Now at the time i had no clue where i was at all. The half elf was leading me on an exciting adventure through lands i never knew of. In my world it was just Faydwer ( i was just 13 or 14 at the time and never looked at the map or anything because the game was installed onto my computer by my friend who couldnt play on his) After making it through east karana without dieing we end up in the gorge of king xorbb.. as we make are we into this maze of a zone we are ambushed by several minotaurs and die in mere seconds as we were hacked to pieces by red conned minotaurs that we had no business being around. After the loading screen i end up back in greater faydark only to have my group disbanded and the half elf logged off and me stuck with a corpse run to a destination in which i have no idea how to get to. So after a few attempts of trying to make my way back and failing miserably every time i finally called it quits on getting back that banded armour suit i just bought. Aladamari never made it past level 11 before i switched servers and started a new as a big fatty ogre shaman dat lykes tu skwush tingies wif da club an kast da majik on dem litul munsters. Anyway that corpse run has never left my memory because of the size of the world and probably the fact that i was so young that it seemed to grand. Hopefully you guys will have some fun memories to share.

Edit it to where it has some paragraphs and I'll read it. Thanks in advance.

Lets see, i started EQ1 around right after Kunark came out. I made a human druid and was given some armor from a friend to start with. I got to about level 9 and was loving it. Then i came home one day to find that my mother had deleted my character and took my stuff. After that i had trouble sticking to one character, i made literally hundreds of alts... i think the farthest i ever got level wise was mid thirties.

My favorite area to level was probably either crushbone or paludal caverns. Findig groups was pretty easy back then, even at the low level.

My favorite expansion, was probably Luclin. I thought the Vah Shir were so awesome looking and being on the moon was so cool, lol. Also, the Beastlord class was pretty cool, i made a lot of those.

I actually took up playing EQ again this past week with a dark elf necro and am surprised that i am really enjoying it. After playing EQ2 and WoW and Guild Wars, EQ just seems more fun. Even with the old graphics i feel more immersed than i ever did in WoW. I dont know, hopefully this will last.

Do you have any idea what a paragraph is?

    Nice memory, OP.

I actually just made that word up. Does it mean something in the English language?

They have a free trial called "escape to norrath". It's free for up to level 10. I tried it out recently and really started to get into it..........and then turned it off after I saw my wife and brother in law playing a much more recent mmo.

I remember as a kid going to the Smithsonian Air and Space museum and getting freeze dried ice cream and I thought it was the greatest thing ever.  Went back about 10 years later and got it again....and it tastes like crap though it is the same.  Sometimes your memories are better than how the real thing is after your tastes, desires, and expectations have refined.

I loved EQ1 it was my first true 3d mmorpg,i tried to go back last year but it didn't feel the same for me.

I played for 4 years and my favorite zones were Crystal Caverns, i used to levi down to the bottom. I also spent a long time in Sirens Grotto and on Luclin.

I also spent a huge amount of time in Dragons Necropolis killing phase spiders for that phase spider chest drop,it was worth tons of cash.

I used to spend a day in their and come away with 2-3 phase spider chest drops, that's was my farming done for the week.

It was a great Beast Lord chest item

Erudite Wizard and Val Shar Beastlord FTW.

I have played Vanguard for the last 3.5 years and i get the same feeling i did with EQ1.

Logging into the game on a dial-up connection in Jan. 2000 as a Woodelf in the Tree city of Kelethin and promptly falling to my 1st of many deaths. When i finaly relized i was up in the air i did find the lift platforms and figuerd out how to get down, when stepping off the platform was killed by a bee. Sigh that was awhile ago. I was hooked

Someone ripped you off for what little you had (obviously just for laughs) then teleported you off to die while your elf pal abandoned you.  Then you had to reroll.

And this is a good memory.

Either you were abused as a child, or you're making a point about the Everquest community/the MMO community in general that the posters before me aren't picking up on.

LOL. Back then I'm sure he was probably all NERDRAGE, but now it's a good memory because looking back on it - it's funny.

I remember when I first started playing and I died on Orc Hill in Greater Fay.  I asked someone to drag my corpse back to Felwithe.  Back then if you gave consent to drag you also gave consent to loot.  Thankfully he didnt loot it but he did mess with me and told me he did.  I was pretty pissed thinking about losing ALL THAT TIME (about 2hrs lol) I had put into the character.  Eventually I got my corpse and all was good.  Looking back, it's part (there's more...much more) of what endeared me to EQ.

Lol nah not abused as a child, it was a good memory for me because of the way the world felt so huge when i was that old... and yeah they may have gotten me for my 10pp back then but it was a fun experience for the long journey that it felt like. Im not saying anything about the community being bad because i loved the community, i still have friends from way back then that i remember as if i still talk to them for all the help they gave me.. Blind Guardians/Jesters guild on Bertoxx server.

I understand that its just a memory and the game wont ever be like that to me again... this wasnt a memory to jolt me back into playing the game because a few months ago i picked it up and played and then school and such so i put it down until i recently graduated. I may get back into it again however if i can con a friend to run through it with me and i say con because the graphics are crap but the content is still pretty good, as long as you have someone to play with its a decent game i think.

I started EQ in 2000. Picked a random server and my cleric was born. Just started to lvl and it was my first MMO. I did not have a clue at pretty much anything.

     I was in heaven!

As time goes by i started to get some lvls and a basic idea of what i was doing. Started to meet some people and make some friends.

Then this thing called a "Fan Fair" was being held in San Diego. Well crap, i can drive there!

So off to the fan fair i go and i meet all sorts of new people from the same server that i am on! And this is were i get into my guild!! Woot! I have a guild.

So now as a member of this up and coming guild we spend hours & hours lvling and making new friends. Our guild grows and life is great.

We are all finially max lvl and we start to raid... OMG. OMFG this is great! 72 people getting together and O.M.G.

SO yeah, had lots of fun with the game. I still talk to many of the people i was guilded with. And oh yeah, I married and had a kid from one of the pretty wood elfs I met as well :P

well its about 7-8 years ago I enjoyed EQ. Can't say I have much in memories anymore- I just know its time theres a mmorpg that had some of the appeal of EQ. I think by this stage, its a pipe dream now.

  • JimmacJimmac Member UncommonPosts: 1,660

I remember my first few EQ experiences, and they are indeed great to me.

As others have described as well, my first memory is taking those first few steps only to realize how huge the world is. You feel lost constantly, with no map or anything. I remember trying to get from city to city and having to ask people along the way for directions. "Yeah take the path until it forks to the right, then go right, but run along the mountain or you'll die."

My best specific memory was my first death. I was younger then and while an experienced gamer, I hadn't even come close to grasping the concept of an mmorpg. I made a character and went out exploring. I had no idea how easy it would be for me to die.

I somehow make it to the desert right outside freeport and as I'm running around aimlessly just looking for something to do, I see these 5 guys standing around a little hut. I think, "Wow this is awesome. I wonder who those guys are and what they are doing?" I run up to them to say what's up and see what's going on.  3 seconds later I'm toast and I have no idea what happened. All my stuff is gone and I'm back in the city. I come to find out that those 5 guys standing around were computers not player characters, that they were red to me, and that I had better start yelling for someone to drag my corpse to me so I don't lose all my stuff. I couldn't even remember what I had on my body when I died. All I knew was that I didn't want to lose any of it.

I finally find the hut and find someone to drag my corpse to me, and yup, I got my starter weapon and robe back. The guy laughs, hands me a backpack full of food and water and runs off.

I recall buying my first 2 MMORPG trial disks, one for Lineage 1 and the other EQ1.  I tried EQ1 first, installed the game, logged in, and could hardly move 3 steps without experiencing massive lag.  Since I had broadband I knew that wasn't it, so I loaded Lineage 1 and started playing that instead.

Turns out my video card was incompatible with EQ 1 and about 6 months later when I tried DAOC I ran into the same problem which I solved by purchasing a "DAOC approved" card (of which there were only like 12 on the list, who remembers those days eh?)

So I never really got to give EQ1 a go..... shame really, probably would have had fun.  So little time, so many MMORPG's to play.

Was a high elf wizard back in the day. I read that in Erudin you could get +2 INT robe. Somehow I convinced my friends to make the hike there. It took all night, a few deaths, some cuss words, but we made it. It was quite the adventure.

It's been so long and my memory is a little fuzzy but I think when we got there those damn merchants told me something to the effect, "Beat it, you've ruined your own lands you'll not ruin ours!" It seems I was able to convince someone there to buy me one for a little extra coin.

I wore that robe for the longest time, dreaming of owning the robe from Ocean of Tears, and bigger dreams of getting a Carmine robe.

Early memories of EQ.  My first boat ride to East commons I got stuck on the boat and couldn't get off. The GM had to come in game and intercead. Another time I went through a zone and came out the other side naked! No kidding! Apearently someone had found an exploit where they could make an expensive pair of boots that way and it took forever to get my stuff back. Frankly I'm supprised they did give it back but me telling everyone about it at East commons tunnel wasn't something they,(sony) liked so they gave it all back to me lol.

But yes I love my memories of Kelithin and the jumps off the platforms. There used to be sooo many ppl at the lift groups were a snap. E. common tunnel had sooo much chat I had my chat screen fully expanded and still couldn't finish reading a sentence before it went by. They were good days. Years later after the hords left for wow I went through the tunnel and talk about lonely and quite. It really got to me. All those ppl I knew are out there somewhere, china, europe, east coast ect. We were good friends and now have no idea where each other is.

In the end I got tired of fixing all my toons each patch. The last jewelery stunt sony introduced made most equipment under 50 obselete distroying the bizzar business I had. Kind-a like wow is doing now. Distroying ppl's toons they had for years.

I heard once that every nation in history has fallen once taxes reached 50%, if that were translated into games in history it would be Every game has fallen who tryed to dispose of the first 50 lvl's. lmao but true.

Dude, very similar story here but different ending.  I was at the museum of Natural History and I bought that....and guess what:  It was just as good as it was 10 years ago!!!!

I even played UO servers that are just as much fun as 10 years ago (except for the low pop.

Everquest though?  Kinda hard to live that nostalgia because most of it required camping something for insane hours with no progression.  Whereas it's my theory that UO nostalgia can be re-created.  2 cents on that topic.

One of my fav EQ memories was before Kunark came out me (Necro) and 4 friends 2 mage 2 cleric would go into Kedge Keep all the time and go name spawn to name spawn.  We did this for about 5 hours one of the mages forgot to reclick his water breathing stone and died.  we wiped.  took about another 3 hours to get the bodies out naked was alot of fun though.  Also I remember being in Fear and people going afk and binding in zone then the raid would split and delevel inc seen a guy lose about 5 levels maybe more he lost his stuff couldnt level fast enough to reenter.

Recently me and some friends who play just about MMO that comes out togather where talking about how no games have given us the same memories like UO, EQ, DAOC.  They just dont make games as challenging as they use to which waters down alot of your accomplishments.  I have never found a game that has held my attention as much as EQ and UO played both for about 7 years.  I havnt stayed with a game more than probably 3-4 months since except Daoc which was about 2 years.  I dont see a game coming out that looks like it will either.

Literally going insane hunting for the manastone to drop and sell. LoL

So much fun. The community at that time made the game.

Going after the Sleeper on my first high speed connection was also fun. Tho' I just got to be apart of some of the early unlocking stages of the raid.
