Your internet breaks down one day.  You call up your internet company to come fix it. A strange man appears at your door within the hour and claims to be the repair guy. He replaces your modem with an odd looking box with a large button on top. He tells you that your internet is fixed but in order to play another MMO again you would have to push the button on top. He warns that if you do..someone that you don't know will die in real life.

A little off topic, but how was the short story? Cause the movie sucked...

As for the question, would I press the button?

If some dude came to fix my net and told me that, I would call the cable company back and ask for a new tech to come out. If that failed I would just switch services :P

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Man.. I'm just completly blown away by this entire thread.

Surely, a cow's life is more important than a human's full stomach? Or a pig's life, or a chicken's life perhaps? Doesn't stop me from eating meat, and enjoying it.

    I also enjoy my games.

I don't really see gaming and one of the most basic means of survival being in the same boat, but you make a good point with the enjoyment of eatting part, it's not really about sustaining your own life anymore but more of a hobby.

This thread just keeps getting more interesting :) Our judgement as a species is doomed weither we push that button or not.

I can't say anything about the story, and yeah it was a terrible movie, but the whole idea and purpose behind it is genius and no ammount or lack of story telling could really change that.

nah, i like mmo's, but i can find something else to do with my free time. Hell I only play em when I am at work anyways, I could watch porn or something else instead.

Now if they said the same thing about porn.....  j/k :P

I don't like humans at all, but it is not my right to infringe upon another's life, even if I did not like them.

My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.

Interesting read. And perhaps explains why society is the way it is today - on so many levels. I could go on but I will just say:

    A) Alot of people cannot see or think beyond their own noses.

    B) Alot of people do not consider the consequences of their actions.

    C) Pushing the button is no differnt than putting a gun in your own mouth and pulling the trigger.

Again, nice topic. Very interesting to see people's replies and rationale in regards to taking another's life (and ultimately their own). I voted no. I suppose I am not willing to take the life of a complete stranger who has in no way wronged me whatsoever.

This whole 3rd person human race thing, is this the new cool, or is it just a way of relinquishing yourselves of any form of responsability? You do know you are all part of this 'human race' thing right?

That's just it, we don't really have to take an animal's life to sustain ourselves. We do it because we enjoy eating meat, it just comes natural to us.

I just don't think that human life is any more or less important than anything else's life. When it comes to my enjoyment of my life, well, I most likely would push that button.

The animals that are eaten now in 'developed' countries would not have existed if I were not going to eat them. Come to think of it I guess I'm doing them a favour by eating them, I should get some kind of award.

Being paranoid helps at times like the situation in The Box.

People don't consider the implications of the entire situation.  You don't know the vast majority of people in the world.  So the obvious outcome is that after you push the button and get your money/MMOs the box is taken to someone you don't know who pushes the button and you die.

The movie left a lot to be desired, it felt like they should have made it continue and explained more fully their premise of it.  It was not bad as far as extending the original story but they didn't do enough with it and left it with a rather abrupt ending.

The post reminds me of a short story:

At an U2 Concert the band suddenly stops to play and Bono just claps his hands, and he says

"everytime i clap my hands, a child dies" - someone shouted: "then fuckin stop to clap your hands you murder!"

So, you feel that that animal's life is worth less than yours? It's okay to take that animals life so that you can enjoy your meal, but it's wrong to take a person's life so that you can enjoy your free time?

Errr yeah, I have certain qualities that rise me above poultry, although after reading through this thread and some of the logic I can see why you may differ in your opinion.

I would have thought the idea that you are ending the life of someone would be enough of a deterant without needing the kicker for you to be next on the list. Morally I'm not sure which is worse.

Hmmm, irrelivant. Just remove the stupid box with the button and replace it with the spare modem you got hiden in your closet and play away. No button pushing required and nobody gets hurt. What?!?! you dont have a spare modem in your closet??? Well why the hell not?

Besides, Mr. Creepy who put the box in probably didnt mention that the person who pushes the box is most likely the one to die from pushing it. You seriously think its a random Joe and not just a simple poison on the botton? And yeah I know he said someone you dont know, but honestly, how many people really know themselves these days? Half the people on here probably have 15 alternate identities on the internet right now.

(DISCLAIMER - The use of the word YOU in the above post is not directed at any one person in particular, but towards those who fall into the category itself - there is no personal attack here, neither intentional nor implied.)

They value their life more than that of someone else. No different than you valuing your life over a chicken's.

Valuing your own life over that of others is fine (maybe). The only thing preventing you from ending the life of another person is the fear that it may result in the end of your own, is pretty fkin sad.

Ever read the Monkeysphere?  I think it explains humanity as a whole pretty well.

Nothing to do with fear at all.  Only to do with the likely manipulation being played upon you and the outcome of it.  You will note I never actually said I cared or did not care that someone was going to die, you put those words in my mouth for me.

I didn't put those words in your mouth, I didn't even type the word care. It's a moral 'choice' and a balance of the value upon which you put to certain things. The reply to your post was based on the implication you made that it wasn't the act of killing a stranger which was necassarily the deterent but the possibility that it could end in your own death. Even needing to make that point, beyond the death of a stanger at your own hands, should surely then make any other consideration irrelevant.

Would you care if someone else pushed that button, and that person to die happened to be you?

Not many seem to be taking this hypothetical situation very seriously lol :( Props to the OP for this post though, should be quite interesting to watch.

why should i? you self are the only one who doesnt suffer from your own death ;)   I'm dead then, so what do i care that i'm dead? the only ones who could be interested in the event would be friends and family, but not myself.

Now if you ask me if i'm worried about someone pressing the button and thereby killing my GF - thats another story, as I would suffer, and so it would count for me.

    quite interesting topic tbh ^^

    I wouldn't push the button.

I have to say though... this ISP in question sounds about as evil as my current one.

  • AdamantineAdamantine Member RarePosts: 5,085

    Of course I wouldnt push.

    I'd get a real modem.

And if I cant, well, as long as I'm not getting cut off from sex, I think I'll be fine.
