A question to the people who intend to play SW:TOR [poll]

I'm in the majority third option. As for the second part of the question I pretty much hate the SW films, they're just really, really bad. The newer ones were just as bad as the older ones, if they keep making them at some point they've got to make a decent film just by the law of averages.

    Grats.

I'm 19 and i've already pre-ordered. Played SWG for 5 years and also played KOTOR. Loved both. Getting the game simply because i prefer the SW universe over any other, it is unique. Also because Bioware are outstanding story tellers and i've always wanted an MMO where the ride from 1-X is enjoyable and doesn't feel like a grind. To me TOR sounds like it will do this.

As for the amount of information released, i'm fine with it. The stuff they have released looks very good. If they come out with to much information it could end up like GW2 is at the moment..Insanely over-hyped (not saying gw2 will be bad but hype that high is never a good sign). Hoping to here little more about end game soon though.

Shaping up to be a fine MMO in my opinion.

I'm 18 in two months, and I've played both SWG and KOTOR. KOTOR was my favourite Star Wars RPG, tho' I never really got into SWG, and I didn't play it pre-cu, so I didnt see the golden days of SWG.

I'm a BioWare fanboi aswell, as NWN was my first RPG ever played, and still one of my favourite games.

I'm in the 35+ group who played SWG and KOTOR. I thought KOTOR was well done(as obviously did the majority judging by sales and it's awards) and hated SWG in all its incarnations(most broken un-star warsy game I've ever played). TOR looks promising but I'll still wait until the reviews come out before making final decision.

    Currently Playing: World of Warcraft

Pushing 31yo, been playing SWG for a good 5 years, enjoy the films but don't class myself as a Star Wars fan, much of what i know comes from the films and SWG.

I've played both the KotOR games and enjoyed them greatly.

Looking forward to SW:TOR but only time will tell if i make it my primary MMO, SWG was my first MMO and after trying many others since i'm not impressed with any of them.

I'm 30 years old, and am a huge Star Wars fan.  I have read most of the books, played KOTOR 1 and 2, and played SWG.  SWG (pre-cu) is my all time favorite MMO.  I am getting more and more worried about how well the MMO portion of MMORPG is getting implemented in this game, and if it was any other franchise I would probably wait for some reviews before purchasing.  The Star Wars name, and Bioware tag are what will be guaranteing that I will purchase immediatly.  I think this game will feel more like a single player experience, but I think it will be fun.   It won't be a rehash of SWG, but IMO the thing SWG did best was embody what an MMO should be.  It had plenty of problems, but the ideas that it was based on (and not its actual implementation) should be more prevalant in games.

I'm in the old fogies category.   I saw SW: A New Hope back when it released.    I liked it, but I wasn't terribly crazy about the plot:  a knight, armed with a sword (lightsaber), along with some companions, breaks into a 'dungeon' to rescue a princess.   That's about as cliche as it gets.    But it was a fun movie, anyway.

I will definitely play the game.    My top two reasons are that it looks very polished and flushed out, and most importantly, I can solo the entire storyline!    I can solo at endgame!    For all the cries of MMOs becoming too solo-friendly, this is the very first one I know of that allows this.    I enjoy MMOs but I despise being dependant upon others in a game.

I'm in the same old category, saw A New Hope in theaters, and was blown away by the special effects. They look a little cheesy now, but we had never seen anything like those ships in space, or the aliens in the cantina. Stop motion was the height of F/X prior to this...heh.

I was only 11, so I didn't think the plot was hackneyed, it was new to me.( However I walked out on Avatar because of the plot...Pocahontas anyone?). Ah to be young and unjaded.

Back on topic...I will play TOR because it is Bioware and they tell a great story. Looking forward to immersing myself in the decision making, and role-playing my toon. I tried SWG, pre NGE, on a friend's account. It was very confusing and not compelling at the time. Never played KoTOR.

Hmm... that's odd. It looks like the numbers don't at all support the popular theory held by SWG vets that everyone who wants to play TOR are 12 year-olds. Imagine that...

EDIT: I'm 30 btw and a huge fan of Bioware games and KOTOR in particular. I also love Star Wars and I tried to love SWG... but it was really a bad game in my opinion. Too much playing house and not enough pew pew.

People, take it easy, no need for fighting about it, we're all united in our interest in playing SW:TOR even if our reasons for it may be different. Yes, there are a number of SWG vets who liked SWG and also want to give SW:TOR a shot, but as the comments in this thread and threads on other forums show, there are also large numbers of people who never played SWG or didn't like it, but who did like KOTOR, or Bioware games or Star Wars in general and for those reasons are interested in SW:TOR.

Remember, we all have different tastes and preferences, that doesn't mean that one taste is better than another person's taste image

And if a game isn't to someone's taste, well, there are always other games around or coming out.

To be honest if it was a star wars mmo being developed by someone other than Bioware i probably would have no interest in the game. If i wanted another Story less mmo there would be no reason to go to it as The VO/Story is the main part of this mmo and the main reason why i'm going to buy this game.

I agree, it would almost have been better if they had used a original IP like Mass Effect for this game but I can understand the draw of the Star Wars franchise to Bioware.  Plus I doubt they want to put out a Mass Effect MMO until after they have finished the trilogy.  I always thought that making KOTOR take place so far back in the past from the movies was brilliant on Biowares part.  They put it in a time where the universe felt familiar but they could weave their own story without having to worry about breaking cannon.  On the same note that was always one of the things that bothered me about SWG.  I have always thought that trying to fit the game into the time period of the movies was a mistake and really limited what the developers could do story and gameplay wise.

Actually, Lucas is the one that approached Bioware about making the original Knights of the Old Republic. Lucas was a fan of Baldur's Gate.

Btw, Mass Effect 3 looks to have multiplayer elements. Bioware posted some job openings last year about looking for multiplayer experienced programmers to join "our Mass Effect team". I am looking forward to seeing the resolution of the Mass Effect trilogy.

It'll be great but also sad when ME3 comes out and the epic trilogy ends :(

don't get your hopes up, Mass Effect 3 is like Half-Life 2: episode 3

It is supposed to be released within the next year, but we haven't even gotten as much as a single screenshot yet :(

OT: I did not see Mass Effect on the EA list for fiscal 2011. I am expecting Mass Effect 3 to be delayed while the work on the PS3 Mass Effect 2 completes. Still, it might be a announcement at E3 for as a big surprise for xmas 2011.

First, I am 35+ and played the other SW games but I believe that your poll may have a flaw in that I doubt many under the age of 18 (or close to the 18 year range) interact much on these forums (in most areas that is) in comparison to the older community.

So IMHO all this poll will reveal in mainly the age groups that interact here.....And I believe there will be extremely large numbers of younger gamers playing it (most who don't even know or care about a site like this).

Even my own son who is an avid gamer and just turned 17 (and his friends) they know about SWTOR and plan to play but never ever some to this site.....just an informed observation.

I agree, but this isn't a survey image. I mentioned earlier in this thread (post 4) that I didn't consider the poll to be representative for all the potential players of SW:TOR, but merely something that can give an indication here on this site.

As for who will be interested in SW:TOR: I believe that LA/Bioware in their own way are casting their net as wide as Blizzard did, with interested people among KOTOR fans, Bioware game players, Star Wars fans, themepark fans and MMO gamers looking for a new MMO to play, that'll be polished and have large variety and amount of content to keep busy with.

If they'll succeed in it, well, that remains the question until next year.

SWG was my first MMO, though I only stuck with it for about 6 months before throwing it off the system.

Kotor is still one of my favourite games, though I really just played it too much to play it again.

I'm looking forward to TOR because I've been looking for a true story-driven experience the moment I logged into SWG, being my first mmo.

I read on their site that it would allow me to 'live the SW experience', which made me buy that game in the first place, it did not do anything of the sort however.

No MMO's I played afterward did it either, although some got close, I hope this one nails it.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

I am 37 years old and definately plan on getting SW:TOR on release.

I was born in '73, so I grew up with Star Wars, it was a major part of my childhood and I still love it to this day.

I played SWG for 3 years and it's still my favourite MMORPG to date.  I know that SW:TOR is going to be nothing like Pre-CU SWG and I am totally fine with that.  I can enjoy both sandbox and themepark MMO's as long as they are well made and fun to play.

I am also a huge BioWare fan and have played through every one of their single-player RPG's several times each.  I must have 25+ playthroughs on KOTOR alone.  Like the poster above, I hope that SW:TOR will become my new MMO home.

    MMORPG History:
    Playing - EVE Online.
Played (Retired) - AO, SWG, MxO, WoW, RFO, SoR, CoX, EQ2, GW, L2, Vanguard, LotRO, AoC, TCoS, Aion.
    Favourite MMO - Pre-CU SWG, 3 Years, 4 Accounts, 2 Pre-CU Jedi (1 Pre-9).
Awaiting - Star Wars: The Old Republic, The Secret World, Earthrise.

I'm 36 (barely in the 35+ group) and I am really looking forward to SW:TOR.  Episode 4 was the first movie I saw in the theater, and despite the special editions and the prequel trilogy I am still a huge fan of Star Wars.  I played KotOR several times, but never played SWG.  The primary reason I am excited about SW:TOR comes down to 2 words: MASS EFFECT.  If Bioware is putting the kind of quality into TOR that I've seen in their previous titles, it may finally pull me away from CoX.

  • SouldrainerSouldrainer Member Posts: 1,857
Why are SWG and KOTOR lumped together for the purposes of this poll? They are not alike at all, and SWG has zero influence on this game...

35+, played KOTOR1, skipped KOTOR2, only played beta SWG but never bought it because it was "Crafting Wars"

Was fully intending to buy SWTOR, until they starting pushing their joke of a rail shooter as "space combat."  FU Bioware.
