Eve is the best sandbox game ever in my opinion.

And if someone recommends Fallen Earth, don't believe it's a sandbox. It's simply not.

    You aren't the only one.

I am one of those folks that has not found the right fit since old time SWG was tanked.

Problem is (if you don't like EvE) there is just not much out there. FE was ok, but not quite there for me, and I have tried others over the years, but what you want, pretty much isn't available.

I was looking into entropia universe anyone know anything about that? Also I couldnt really get into EvE being in a space ship 24/7 wasnt for me

    Try Darkfall.

This is exactly how I feel and what ruined the game for me. Being stuck in the ship still limited your freedom. I played for 6 months and have no intention to return anytime soon.

Im on a DarkFall free trial but there just is something about it that pushes me away

EvE the whole space thing and constantly being in a ship is for me

I was interested in looking at

Entropia Universe but im not sure about it i was wondering if anyone else knows about it and was just wondering if there were any other great Sandbox's

  • JimmacJimmac Member UncommonPosts: 1,660

I thought Entropia Universe was played with real money? Kind of link online gambling. To me that doesn't really qualify as an mmorpg. It's more like a casino.

Anyway, in regards to your question, it depends on what you mean by sandbox. There are a ton of them, just tons of different types. Wurm, A Tale in the Desert, and Haven and Hearth are all sandboxes in the sense that you can greatly manipulate the world and create things. SWG and Eve are sandboxes in completely different ways.

You could try Ryzom - it has a 21-day free trial and is very atmospheric and interesting crafting.

Ryzom is simply the best land based sandbox currently

Especially vidz 3,4 & 10 for atmosphere. Gluck.

Sorry to be such a noob and to post a noobish question, but I too am currently looking for a new mmo and jsut want to ask what is a Sanbox type of Game? All I know are mmos, not really sure if  there are classifications for those. lol sorry again.image

Overall, I agree that EvE is probably the best sandbox game out there as far as polish and depth are concerned, and would probably fit what the OP is looking for.  Ultima Online is also still around.

Games like Mortal Online or Darkfall would probably also be worth looking at.

Upcoming games that might fit the description include Earthrise, Xsyon, Aerrevan, Dawntide, and Perpetuum.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

in a sandbox mmo the game world is mostly driven by the players. economy, political boundaries, wars, etc. the most well known example is EvE online.

the other genre is themepark mmo. players do things but have no real effect on the big picture of the world. Activities are often scripted. most well known example of themepark gameplay is WoW.

Have you looked into Ryzom?  I've seen some pretty impressive graphics coming out of it, and from what I hear it's sandboxy.

    Rocket Travel Video

    http://hazeron.com/

Shores of Hazeron is a multiplayer game of interstellar war and science fiction adventure.

The Shores of Hazeron game universe is presented to the player in three-dimensional first-person perspective. Sizes and distances are scaled dramatically from reality whenever necessary for tolerable game play and limitations of computers. In other words it doesn't really take years to travel to another star, there are hundreds of stars in the sky at night instead of millions, and the nearby planets, moons, and suns appear huge and close in the sky with the unaided eye. Each player perceives the universe as if they were seeing and hearing it with their own eyes and ears. Players experience the game universe first-hand as if they were there in person.

A large number of players participate simultaneously in the game via Internet. Players interact with each other directly and indirectly when playing the game. There are facilities in the game to help players locate and join their friends, to communicate with each other, and to rescue players from difficult situations. There is no option to play the game solitaire, though there is plenty of space to be alone.

Players join together to form empires. Empires are expanded by exploring and developing new solar systems and by conquering the solar systems developed by others. Empires are formed, conquer, and are conquered in a continuous struggle for dominance of the galaxy.

Players develop empires by building cities. Cities are built by constructing industries and roads. Roads expand the reach of a city; industries are built next to its roads. As cities grow, a population of citizens grows with them. Citizens construct buildings, manufacture commodities, and otherwise perform the everyday jobs of the city. While building the homes and industries of a city, players must manage the challenges of a growing population, morale and unemployment.

The game economy is based on commodities, such as stone, grain, wood, coal, etc. Industries manufacture commodities. Cities interconnect to trade commodities. Commodities are used to construct buildings and to manufacture other commodities, Commodities are also used to manufacture vehicles such as boats, aircraft, tanks, APCs, spacecraft, and all equipment used by players.

Spacecraft play a central role in the game. Spacecraft are designed by players in the game environment. The rooms of a spacecraft are "painted" into a grid that can be lowered and raised for decks below and above. The game creates a fully functional three dimensional model of a spacecraft from the design. Players earn in-game commissions when their spacecraft designs are manufactured, encouraging skilled spacecraft architects to share their designs with others. Once manufactured, spacecraft are used to explore the galaxy and to combat other spacecraft.

Unexplored worlds, interstellar wars and the politics of galactic empires form a rich environment for science fiction story telling. Contributing authors provide intriguing and thought-provoking storylines that progress with the participation of players. Set against the wartorn backdrop of Hazeron, stories unfurl with the players filling the roles of the main characters.

There are countless combinations in Hazeron for the layouts and contents of sectors and solar systems, the terrain and weather of planets and moons, the DNA of plants and animals, the designs of starships, and the machinations of clever players. Three dimensional representations of plants and animals are synthesized from compact DNA data, not pregenerated models. With over 300 trillion times a trillion combinations of plant DNA and over 80 thousand trillion times a trillion times a trillion combinations of animal DNA, no two planets in Hazeron are likely to have the same plants and animals. Hazeron presents an exceptionally vast and varied galaxy for players to explore and conquer.

OMG that hazeron game sounds cool, but is the performance of the game really reflected by what I see in the youtube vids?

I don't mind mediocre graphics for a game that has more depth than Amy Winehouse's hoohah, but I would expect decent performance on a modern rig at least.

Well it sounds like your looking for eve, but don't want eve.

I may have a good alternative.

    http://www.perpetuum-online.com/

It's essentially eve online, only on the ground, in giant robots and mechs. And has w,a,s,d controls instead of eve's click to move style.

It also has working cover, so you can hide behind hills, rocks, plants, trees, stations, etc. In order to avoid fire.

It has large corporations(guilds) run by players. And a smallish playerbase currently. (No more than a few thousand active players.)

If you've played eve, it takes little time to adjust to, if not, then it can be a challenge to learn, due to it's complexity.

If you do decide to try it out, contact me in-game and I'll be happy to show you the ropes. Character name in-game is "blackomen".

Screenshot added as an example of how it looks.

To find an intelligent person in a PUG is not that rare, but to find a PUG made up of "all" intelligent people is one of the rarest phenomenons in the known universe.

The Hazeron game isn't even in beta really yet. It has major performance issues, There have been some server issues in the last week that they are ironing out, but they are improving, and when it's running smoothly it's an epic game. You start with nothing but a knife, and build your empire up from a simple wooden sewing needle. It's like a cross between Wurm, Eve, and Simcity. Ships are fully customizable. The character race creation allows you to make unique species, and cater them to your playstyle.
