In his latest Star Wars: The Old Republic column, MMORPG.com Community Manager Michael Bitton takes a look at probably the most recognizable character archetype from the game: The Jedi. While acknowledging some reservations about the overarching story, Mike figures that the Jedi adventure just might make the whole game worthwhile. Find out why in Mike's latest look at Star Was: The Old Republic.
Since we kicked off this column I’ve been mulling about writing on what I feel it means to be a “Jedi”, and what I expect or hope it to be like in Star Wars: The Old Republic. Unfortunately, Jedi have been one of the lesser discussed and shown classes compared to the other six, at least up until recently, and so I pushed it aside for some more pressing topics. However, last week Bioware gave us a fairly in-depth look at Jedi in Star Wars: The Old Republic as part of that week’s Friday Update, and so it seemed prudent to finally discuss Jedi this week.

What ? How come no one has slagged this article off yet. You guys are losing yer grip.
Am I supposed to say "First" or something.
Anyoldhow Jedi is looking good - apart from the armour that looks a bit cheap. Do they take a vow of poverty or something?
I used to visit this site a lot however in recent years it has become the home of negative forum posts, illogical opinions and tantrums so I visit less often.

I just started to read I Jedi actually and so far its doing good. Also can't wait to play this one! I been trying to get into beta sense it was announced..Love star wars lore and all.
As with all rpg games I have ever played, I long to be the ultimate hero. I am inspired by the likes of Yoda, Obiwan and Luke to be just that. I will enjoy playing the many different classes, but being the quentessential hero is always my main focus.
In KOTOR and KOTOR II, I thrilled at snubbing the attempts of the Dark Side to seduce me. Relished being able to take the Light path. So, that is why I want to play a Jedi.
I'll be playing a Jedi mainly because my actions in every game i play seem to be on the good side. Even when trying to play a bad guy in games like Dragon Age and Fallout 3, it was incredibly hard for me to choose the evil choices. I always felt like I was betraying myself by making decisions that would never come to me naturally...
hat being said, the dispatch did excite me a bit, In my eyes the game is shaping up to be something beautiful.
As a fan of Star Wars and Bioware, I have been excited for this game since the start. The Jedi and Smuggler videos just added to it. I'm not happy about the space mini game, but that's not enough to stop me from being excited about this game.
I will be playing a Jedi Consular or Sith Inquisitor. Both of these classes fit my play style and overall personality...I am a behind the scenes guy but if need be I can handle things in the frontline.
I am really excited to play this game and I hope BioWare finds the perfect balance of story and gameplay to make this an epic MMO experience.
The biggest reason I look forward to playing a Jedi is for that toe-the-line aspect, you touched upon.
IMO, no other class in any game seems to delve as deep into your character's decision making and carry with it such repercussions. In most other MMOs, you simply do what the quests tell you to gain exp, there's not really a method or choice that affects the outcome or that can have ramifications down the road. I love the psychology involved.
Your fail comment, failed.
Although I disagree with a lot of what Michael writes regarding SW:ToR (Personally, I think BioWare can do no wrong), this article is pretty on the money. I will, of course be playing through each of the class storylines at least twice, but my first character (and probably my 'main') will be one of the Force using classes.
Up until Friday's dispatch I thought that my first character would be a Sith Inquisitor as I tend to prefer the 'badguys' in games, or perhaps a Jedi Knight because Drew Karpyshyn wrote that class storyline and he is one of my favourite writers, but I now find myself leaning heavily towards playing a Jedi Consular as my first character.
I think that the Consular's storyline will be the most involving in the game, with some really big desicions to make. It will be very interesting scheming and plotting behind the Jedi Council's back as a sneaky Darkside aligned Jedi Consular out for greater personal power.
Also the gameplay for the Consular looks good to me (no, I won't be healed specced), controlling the fight and laying out some awesome ranged DPS, or being a melee DPS powerhouse that is kinda squishy and makes use of stealth mechanics is always fun.
Going back to Michael's question about 'Why Jedi?' in SWG, well for me it was twofold.
Firstly, to me Star Wars is the story of the Jedi/Sith. I know I will get jumped on for this comment by some of my Pre-CU SWG brethren, but being 'Uncle Owen' never interested me in the slightest. Sure, Han Solo was cool as hell in the Original Trilogy and there were a lot of other interesting things going on, but the main story revolves around Vader and Luke, The Sith and The Jedi, The Darkside and The Lightside. Also, for me as a kid growing up in the 70's/80's Darth Vader was the coolest villain in any story. Period. Well, at least until George Lucas and Hayden Christensen conspired to castrate him in the prequels with some truly woeful dialogue and acting.
Secondly, SWG was a game. Jedi, or in my case Dark Jedi, were the most powerful characters in that game, bar none. I wanted a powerful alpha character (or two in my case). It's simple. It basically comes down to this: I wanted to pwn rebel n00bs, lol :P

Very nice article and it is one of the biggest reasons why I want to play TOR. It is the fact that we will get a chance to go behind the seens. See what makes each class the way they are and shape the path our character takes along that story. Each class will have something to learn about their SW story. What makes them tick. And for me the Jedi will be the most interesting.
As many I went to the movies to see the 1st SW in the 70's. Had the action figures and imagined what it would be like to "use the force". That was a childs look at SW. BW look will be much more of an adult look at how a Jedi is shaped. Yes it is not as grand as it could be, but this is a game after all. But it will give me a good look based on SW lore that I have no clue about. Only the movies is what I know, not any of the books. So it will be new all over again for me.
I will want to take my time in TOR and probably play both types of Jedi for the feel and the story of both. Then knowing that this will be an MMO on top of that just means I will be able to continue after the story. Take my character that I will be attached to because of the story and experience the game from that view. Not just a "class" for end game. But a character I shaped from my choices along the way. I know the limitations, but the good out weigh the bad for me.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?

Im very excited to play a jedi and a sith. Of all the classes those 2 are the ones i really wanna explore. I love the movies and books. And for all the charm and excitement guys like han solo and wedge antilles bring. Luke skywalker, darth vadar, Palpatine Darth bane,Yoda, Mace windu and do forth are the characters that always appealed to me
From jacen solo turn to darth ceedus to his sisters painful choice to end his life. From jainia solo having to choose being the sword of the jedi over love. Her sometimes lonely journey to the arguements anakin solo and jacen used to have over the nature of the force and its inherant harm if used to much. These are the stories that always made me come back for more.
First off I have to agree with both rhematon and darqserenity because I had the same experences with Kotor I & II as well as dragon age, when I try to be bad I have to set myself into a totally alien mindset that doesn't feel natural, but also the pure enjoyment of kicking the butt of those who try to tempt me to do the will of the darkside. That will be my main reason for my toon being the Jedi Knight, I love to brawl toe to toe with the enemy. I also got involved with martial arts, Kung fu imparticular, because of Star Wars and the similarities with Jedi. I wasn't born in the 70's so I never got to see the "original" films in theater until it came out as the special edition, but I grew up with Star Wars films and the books of the expanded universe, I played SG and left after they made the jedi a starting class, I liked how they had it at first where you had to find the "trigger" for you to become a jedi, and after they made it a starting class I lost my incentive to keep playing because all of a sudden in a post new hope game Everyone was a jedi or sith... It wasn't cannon
Needless to say I am highly anticipating this MMO and can't wait till it launches
The Jedi Consular is more of the playstyle I'd like. I love the Healing role, so out of the 3+ different types of playstyles that class has already, I'd choose the healing role. As far as choices go... I CAN play a darkside, but it generally goes against my actual way of thinking. Lightside/neutral choices are more in line with me. I will say this though... in my first play through in KOTOR, I was walking the Neutral line the whole way through the game... wasn't sure of where I wanted to go, but as soon as I found out the twist......I went head first down the dark path, and that was actually a very cool and organic way to go to the darkside. To just be mean and nasty for no other motives isn't my style. There'd have to be a reason for doing it, and that was reason enough lol.
On the topic of the healer role... after watching the developer diary on it, I think it's VERY cool that they said the companions become stronger for the Consular if you choose the healer role. That makes it not such a chore or pain in the butt to quest and level as a pure healer.
Nice Article, thanks for the write up.
I really enjoyed playing Knights of the Old Republic. Kotor was the first Star Wars game that I actually enjoyed. After that I have enjoyed playing other Bioware games (Mass Effect, Dragon Age, etc). So in a sense, I am looking forward to see what interesting story lines Bioware can come up with for SWToR jedi. Should I go light or grey or even push towards the dark a bit? I look forward to answering these questions when the game comes out.
I think that BioWare is completely off their rails when it comes to setting up the jedi system the way they did. But I have a lot of faith in them based on past work, so i'll definitely be trying it out just to see exactly what it means to be a dark side republic jedi knight or a light side sith inquisitor. This seems completely bonkers to me, but hey, that's what makes it interesting!

I not gona speculate any more i just gona wait until it comes out then i can say if it is good or not.
Jedi Consular is my biggest lure to SWTOR, the chance to NOT again make some "kill all that moves" character. It was what ruined STO. Star Trek never was about killing all that moves, and even though Star Wars is different, I still think even Star Wars was about way more than killing stuff. That is the oversimplification I am afraid of. So I hope Consular will take this idea serious of making politics and dimplomacy.
If only those ABSURD hats would go away. *shudder*
I have little doubt the heroic story will be cool. It is the rest I expect in a MMO which I fear is NOT there, which gives me a stomach ache.

I read the real "I, Jedi" novel and swtor "jedi" are anything but. Instead of "I, Jedi" when referring to swtor, it should read; "I, who buys anything with a star wars label even if it isn't anything like star wars."
So.. you ARE going to try it?
And THERE it is. At least one hater had to slip through the cracks and not respond to the question of the article!! Awsome job man. Must be why this thread is so quiet... it wasn't an open ended discussion question, but a simple "What draws you to play light or dark Jedi and what do you prefer"
i really dont wanna be a jedi at all, its too much magic, in mmo terms, for my taste. my preferred role in any game is the down-to-earth damage dealer who doesnt use anything but man-made weaponry and gear. also i dont like to be the good guy in games, im always drawn to the dark side..
in short, in swtor im gona be a bounty hunter!
For me its Vader all the way. As a kid Darth Vader was "badder than Ol' King Kong, meaner than a junkyard dog." Plus I am "fighting for the Light" in real life so in games I always choose the dark side for shitz and giggles. Cant wait to pinch off some airways from across the room!
I love how the jedi squeal when I kill them.. gief player bounties!

Its hard for me to think like a dark-sider, so the experience for me to play a character like that has been too hard for me to enjoy. I can't wait to see how my perspectives match the light side per Bioware.
