Hoping for some advice here, thought I'd give this game a go seeing as I've played every other MMO and wanted to try something different.

I know it's an old game so I'm going to have to look past the graphics but I'm a bit confused with the classes?

I've bumped up my settings to max and used my Nvidia panel to force max AA etc so it's ok.

I watched the video intro of all the classes but it hasn't really told me anything, is this game the traditional tank, healer, dps type?

I noticed I can be a jedi but that just seems too much of an obvious choice, so I was looking to find a decent solo class?

I was thinking Commando as they appear to get heavy armor and I'm guessing would have good dps, but I don't see any healing there?

Is there a class that can do good ranged DPS and self heal without being too focused on healing?

I tried to post this on the SWG official forum but because I don't have an active account yet I'm not allowed to even look at the forums it would appear (good idea Sony..you're trying to get my business so make it  asdifficult as possible for me to engage with the game).

Anything else I should be aware of? I've gone on the Starstrider server as that appears to have the highest population but I'm an EU player is this a US Server?

I'm quite willing to give it a go, I heard that Sony killed this game with a radical game change overnight that they told no-one about until it happened but I have no preconceptions about that change as I never saw it and who doesn't like Star Wars?

Thanks for reading welcome any advice or any self help sites.

I've not played in a while but I think Chimaera is the better choice for an EU player.

Kinky, you should go to the SWG O-boards and look under the professions forum and glance at the game guides. In fact, there are several threads in this forum asking similar questions.  All combat proessions (except entertainer) have a self heal. The medic profession has the ability to heal others and rez the dead. All professions, even Jedi, can wear fully stat'ed armor at level 22.

Starsider is the MOST populated server by far. It will probably have action 24/7. Flurry and Bria distantly follow.  I believe Chimaera is the highest populayed EU server. Why don't you just roll a toon on the server and take a look for yourself?

    Hey kinky10,

    Welcome to SWG.

For an overview on how the different classes play out at the high end, take a look at this guide: Guide: Understanding Combat Professions

Relative population statistics to help your server choice can be found here: SWG Galactic Civil War and Player City Statistics - 16th of August 2010

Are you not able to post on the Tansarii Station (New & Returning Player Forum) with a Trial account?  There have been instances of people who abuse trial accounts to disrupt the forums in the past, so perhaps that is why you can't post.

    I hope this helps.

well. personally i recommend Bria.. but.. the others are okay too.. for starting off i think Commando would be a reasonably good choice, all classes get healing (except entertainers and artisans/crafters) though only the medic specialises in it.. but dont worry as you can change professions fairly easily so your not stuck with whatever you begin with.. and when you change, your the same level image

one thing i would do though, is the space bit, i still think that part of the game is far superior to the rest.. you can start whenever you like too, as its not level dependent - though if you go freelance - pirate, you have to be level 30 or so to get through jabba's palace quests so you can reach the pilot trainer there, if you go corsec though etc, that isnt a problem image

another thing is.. find a guild.. plenty of them, and you'll get more out of the game if you join one.. and these days that means you should get a lot of help getting kitted out.. and probably a house etc.. and as always.. playing in a group is always more fun than playing solo.. image
