Honestly- could/ would you recommend a pre-order of this game?

I have read through most of the posts here on this game. I have been playing the beta. Fan or no, answer this honestly. In its current state, would you feel good about recommending this to a friend as a purchase for pre-release or to buy on launch day?

I know I would not feel good about that. Especially if my friend was a novice to MMOs or computer gaming at all.

I am not saying it won't be a GREAT game but lets face it. Only a few weeks from launch and to me, it is in no better state than Vanguard or AOC at the time of launch for those games.

I was in the beta for both and even though there were serious issues pre-launch or in open beta at least you could easily download the fricken client and the mouse worked correctly.

Yeah, yeah, there are those select few who have had a blessed miracle cast upon them and the launcher works fine and the mouse works fine and there was no learning curve either.

As an FF fan or serious MMO vet you might "muscle" through it and wait it out till after release patches that will inevitably fix the issues but as it stands right now I cannot think of telling someone, go buy this game now, can you?

I am not trolling either. it is fair question as I see many versions of posters explaining how to do something or why it is OK that things are not working. Then I see others so frustrated it hurts.  The "Its beta" argument goes out the window when some very basic functions are not working well and the UI/ gameplay is so very hard to get for even some vet MMO players.

Bottom line is if you answer with a no, which I assume most would, and you want this game to succeed, you need to stop making excuses for SE and let them know with the same passion you defend the game with, what it is they need to fix.

I like how people are pushing so hard to get others to cancel their preorders, its like you have a bet against the game succeeding.

Its not enough that you dont like the game, you need to pull out the banner and make sure you push over anyone who is on the fence.

I wouldn't recommend a pre-order of this game, there just isn't enough guidance in the game as of right now. Seems like almost everything i've done on open beta i've had to sift through a bunch of fan websites to figure out what to do.

Honestly learning how to start crafting was frustrating enough. I must say also I can't tell if its just my rig that slows down the game, but it just seems slow. I'm not talking about the combat as I was expecting it from a FF game. But when you start crafting there are load times for each step through it, it just got annoying.

Also being brutally honest, if I had a conversation with one of my friends about this game it would go like this.

me "So the game is ok, nothing super special"

them " oh yeah? whats the pvp like?"

me "uh theres no pvp in it..."

them "... why are you playing it??!!"

I honestly don't mind a pve game, as I generally like it more than pvp (I especially enjoy crafting). I just don't see myself playing a game for like 1+ years with no pvp at all and just constantly chasing that carrot on a stick.

I used my would-have-been pre-order cash for the new Island of Blood battle box that came out earlier! Yay Games Workshop and their new Skaven units.

So how in gods name did you get that I hate the game or want it to fail. I want the exact opposite and do not hate the game AT ALL. Read what I wrote. I just want the hard core fans to be honest with themselves and let SE know what is what so that it gets fixed.

If you don't it will go the way of some other games that should have been big hits on release. I want to see the genre grow and don't want any game to fail. I was really looking forward to this, now I am going to wait and see. Is that what you want for this game? For many, many people who probably would have bought it at launch to wait and see, or worse yet, buy at launch, feel the pains that people are feeling right now and quit.

Agreed.  It's really sad the way many people seem so insecure that they can't live with the thought that other people might actually like something they don't.  They have to convince everyone there is something wrong with it so they don't doubt their own judgment anymore, lol.  But the game is fine and pre-orders have already guaranteed it will be a financial success so they have no hope of having any real effect on the game.  The majority of people who are playing it love it with the exception of the normal beta hassles.  The main problem I've heard about from people playing in the open beta (as opposed to the relative few whining on these forums) is that their equipment may not run the game well since this MMO has higher hardware requirements than any other current MMO.  But the graphics are fantastic so it's worth it, imo.

I wouldn't recommend a pre-order of ANY game. post-launch free-trial is the only way. If I made an MMO with a 10 billion dollar budget and had everything I wanted in it and ran like a dream, I'd still wait for a post-launch free-trial.

In this game in particular, when I try the post-launch free-trial I'll be looking to see if they've addressed the UI issues for PC users. And I really hope they do cause so far the looks great.

For myself on pre-ordering MMO's in the past, I have been let down a lot of times, except for Lord of the Rings Online, I think it was the only game that actually caught my eye from beta to launch.

When FFXI released I did not play it at launch, not until 2005, so I don't know how it was at the beginning, but all I can say is, I enjoyed FFXI more, then the month of playing FFXIV closed and open beta.

If you feel this game is worth pre-ordering after you have played the beta, then I would say go for it, but only if you enjoyed your experience.  The game is about to launch and you now know how it plays, if you like what you've tried so far then you know what to do.

    Wildstar (2013) & Elder Scroll Online (2013)

    Playing: Diablo 3, WOW, Far Cry 3 & X-Com.

Enjoyed: WOW 5 1/2 yrs, LOTRO 3yrs, GW 1/2yr, DFO 1yr, EVE Online 3yrs, and Huxley (Beta).

Failed to impress: GW2 3months, Tera Online 6 months (best combat system in any MMO I've played) STO 1/4yr, Aion 1/2yr, AoC 1yr, CO, Fallen Earth, DDO, EQ2 1/2yr, WAR 1/2yr, Lineage 2 and FF XI 1/2yr, FF XIV.

I like this game, currently playing OB, and I have the pre-order of the ce edition but would I recommend the game.. well that depends on what individual is asking because even though I like this game it is not for everyone, if your worried about getting it and if you will like it wait for a free trial and see if you like is the best advice or the OB but I dont know if there are keys left to get.

Choosing an mmo can be similar to choosing a vacation, like do you want to go to key west, everything just kind of goes with the flow and is pretty laid back, very social place, or say a theme park (not intended to point out a "theme park mmo") like islands of adventure where your gonna get fast paced excitement and tons of things lined up for you to do island to island,

ff14 is key west in this example, and most of the modern mmo's are islands of adventure, AoC, WoW, Aion, Warhammer etc..  they are fast paced and I like things about all these games as well but i'm ready to relax for a bit

I really cant tell. I tried to get into closed beta... failed, I tried to be in open beta, failed ....

Seems they got problem managing the few people in open beta and they closed subscriptions because of it. I really dont want to see the start of the game. Ill wait at least 5-6 months before thinking of playing FF14. I didnt like FF11 at all because of the controls but I deciced to give a chance to 14, but I wont be suicidal to the point of getting a pre-order.

I'm pretty sure you'd give yourself a lifetime membership, it would clear that whole wait for the free trial issue right up.

Other than that, I have to agree with you.  Free trial in general is the way to go.  But some people have more disposable income and less concern about disposing of it than others do.  I suppose I should be grateful to those who put their wallets on the line with preorders, I'm sure it helps game companies out.  I guess I owe the fluffy cash shop pet and pony buyers my thanks, sometimes, too, at least when that extra money goes into developing content that falls under my $15 monthly fee.  Shine on, you crazy spenders, shine on.

Sorry if it wasn't your intent but your post read like a call to arms by someone wanting to stop people from recommending this game and campaign against SE.  In both of the above posts you very strongly imply that the people who are defending the game would not recommend it to their friends.  That's BS.  I'm no hardcore fan.  I've never played an FF game before this so I've been playing all of six days now.  I've been defending the game because I find it fun, beautiful, exotic and not a knockoff of every other MMO out there.  I would most definitely recommend this to anyone who is interested in a well crafted game with a unique feel as long as that person feels they can handle the fact that it doesn't play like every other MMO out there and will require a learning curve.  I would never recommend this game for everyone because it isn't designed for everyone and as a new fan I don't want everyone in it.  That's what WoW is for.

I don't believe any game is perfect and that includes FFXIV.  But I feel this game is a work of art and I will continue to defend it when I feel people are trying to sabotoge it or get it changed to be like every other MMO out there.

I  cancelled my own pre-order after trying beta, so no I cant recommend that you get the game.

  • natuxatunatuxatu Member UncommonPosts: 1,364

I preordered and feel I made a mistake... I'll just cancel. But I'd wait untill after launch and see how that goes and what has changed if anything. Otherwise give it a couple months.... or years... but no, it would be silly to preorder if you have not already.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend you pre-order any game you don't enjoy.

Me, so far I'm enjoying this game, so it's definately a possibility I'll preorder it.  Maybe i'll burn out over the next few weeks and change my mind.

Really, the biggest complaints about the game break down to these things:

    • The GUI - Which could be better, but you can get used to it.

    • The Lag (Internet and Client) - Which could be better, but you can get used to it.

    • The Crashes - Frequency seems to vary from player to player, but I can handle the crash frequency which is on average about once every 2 or 3 hours.  Though it sucks when it kills a Guildleve in progress, this doesn't happen the majority of the time.  Of course, ideally, that it crashes at all would be fixed in the long run.

    • The Balance/Grind - Which is mercilous (even moreso in crafting than in battle) but a godsend if you're tired of the more common, wimpier balance/grind to be found in the more casual-friendly majority of AAA MMORPGs.

    • The Travel Time - Which is mitigated somewhat via the teleport capability, but nonetheless is alright mostly if you like giant feeling worlds.

    • The Lack Of An Auction House Or Means To Search For A Desired Item In The Bazaar - Which seems like a silly oversight, but I can't say the player-driven economy is broken without it so much as much more awkward than neccessary.  It trundles forward like a wagon with square wheels, yes, but it does go forward.

Considering all this, I find the greater body pf complaints about the game to be coming from folks who just lack the fortitude to endure a few mid-sized speedbumps on launch.  If you find yourself similarly afflicted, avoid the game, I won't hold it against you.

To someone who loves this setting, lore, or FF as a whole, I would.  Or someone who prefers consoles.

I really couldn't get into it.  I LOVED the graphics and the animations were great, but outside of that, meh.

I would not. FFXI and FFXIV is a pretty far departure from the regular FF series.

Let's turn this around.   Other than getting a truly-exclusive collector's item, why SHOULD anyone pre-order, ever?  I just don't get it.  I preordered games at a time when physical inventory mattered.  But now that digital download is standard practice, that one doesn't fly.  I've heard people say they like the idea of supporting a game with cash up front, and I can sorta understand that.

But even in a game I beta-tested and loved, I'm still going to wait for launch-day before making up my mind.  Too many games have changed at the last-minute.    I can think of more than a few games that had some pretty significant changes between the end of OB and launch.   Bottom line is, it's a business deal and they need to earn my money or they won't get it.

If you think that's "stupid", then convince us.  Why should we pay any money for a product before it's finalized?  What benefits can I expect in a way that justifies the a) risk I'm taking and b) slack I'm cutting the developer/publisher?

Actually, in this case, there's a pretty good reason: if you pre-order the collector's edition, you get an eight-day head start playing the game.  Normal Edition?  Actually, I don't tihnk they get the head start unless it's collector's edition.

Also, considering this is a Final Fantasy game, it is possible that physical inventory would be a factor.

I personally wouldnt recommend it as its not my groups cup of tea, however, that being said I thinkt he game is fine for its demographic.

I wont lie, I only made it about 20 minutes into the game, but I didnt like the setup...FFXIV is what many would consider a "hard" game or a "Hardcore" game. By this I mean it doesnt hand you anything, you have to more or less figure the game out on your own.

Quests arent clearly marked, npcs you need to talk to vs those you dont arent clearly marked, and if you go somewhere you arent supposed to your magically teleported back to try it again and again via the process of elimination.

I'm sure things would have gotten better had I managed to finish the beginner tutorial...and I really hope that is just the beginers area thats like that... but I think its going to turn off most of the casual players and those that simply want to come home, zone out, and play.

Now, that being said, there is definitely an audience who likes this type of game. Who enjoys having to search for quests, figure things out on their own, and explore the nooks and cranies. For folks who like a VERY story driven game that has very similar single player feels due to the cut scenes and doesnt mind *gasp* doing a lot of reading, then I think FFXIV will be a delightful game. Its gorgeous.

That being said, it isnt for me, and they REALLY need to revamp the first 45 minutes in game...its going to turn a TON of folks away.

No offense, but I think you're missing his point. No where in his post did I see him criticizing the game itself for any of the reasons you're defending. He's just pointing out the plethora of UI issues and the overall lack of polish with how certain systems in the game (and even out, ie. faulty patcher) are currently working/not working properly.

In other words, it's in similar shape to other mmos that have been launched prematurely in the past and he's warning true fans to speak out (in one sense, with their money) in a last ditch attempt to keep the game from suffering a half-assed launch. I, for one, agree with him. It just doesn't seem ready at this point.

A successful launch is pretty much imperative for any new mmo in the industry as it stands today. People have way more options now than they did when FFXI was released, so aside from the hardcore FF fans who will pretty much play no matter the state, many gamers won't be so forgiving. As if the tons of UI complaints and pre-order cancellation threads aren't  any kind of indicator of this already...
