I hate you, Cryptic. I hate you so, so very much. I never thought I would want something D&D to fail, but I want this to tank hard and fast.
I just have so much rage and hate for Cryptic as a company. Everything they make is absolutely terrible. I am sick to my stomach to think of them touching Dungeons & Dragons.
"Gamers will no longer buy the argument that every MMO requires a subscription fee to offset server and bandwidth costs. It's not true you know it, and they know it." Jeff Strain, co-founder of ArenaNet, 2007
I was really hoping for once the naysayers would be right. Well, there's always the off chance that they may just make it a worthy title?
Maybe?
I can dream can't I?
This really sucks...
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
Well, they aren't marketing it as an MMO (needed to change my title forthat). They are calling it an OMG (Online Multiplayer Game). It looks like they are targetting sessions for a small group play (4-6 players). THey did say that the game could be solo'd though.
While I'd never play another Cryptic MMO I would have been halfway interested in this type of game (grab my normal D&D group and play it) but they are using 4th edition rules. Many of us knew that's what the 4th edition rules were designed for (to be made into a computer game based on interest in DDO's creation). I'm not a fan of 4th so I'll have to let this one pass.
I'm still in touch with some of my old pen and paper gaming buddies but even if they all cooperatively came to me and asked I would not touch this game, I can see it now Cryptic will use your close attachments to your friends as just another tool to suck more money out of us much like they did with folks attachment to the STO ip.
I can see it now Dragonlance saga on the C-Store for twenty five bucks and the entire party has to purchase obviously. Naaaah I'm going to make them earn their money the same way other devs do by first making a good quality game with enough depth that my ten year old daughter wouldn't be able to pick up and play.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
Cryptic goes off to ruin another franchise. Sigh, and I love NWN, but Cryptic's reputation of poor game implementation and customer service will steer me clear of this one for a good while.

Basically they said "Diablo 3 is going to be a huge success, we should make a game that taps into that market of small group fantasy gaming" and decided to make this.
That might work if it was any company who's name wasn't Cryptic.
As negative as I am regarding their two main mmos I can't help but feel like Cryptic may realize this is their chance to redeem themselves. Afterall the "rope" has been recently untied from their necks.

It isn't an MMO.

No god please no don't let Craptic ruin another great IP. This is horrible news their third game in 18 months this studio is a disgrace for the industry.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play." "Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
First, everyone knew that rumors of them working on a D&D title were abound. Secondly, why is everyone upset? Wizards already thrashed D&D more than Cryptic could even dream of with this generic new 4ED, which the game will be based on. 2E and 3.5E were amazing in my opinion, sure 2E was extremely broken for gameplay, but 3.5 was amazing, even 3.0. I can't even drag myself into thinking 4.0 is a decent gaming platform as it is made for the Loot only crowd.
I suppose it could make a decent MMO, as really that is how it was designed and I assumed they were going release another MMO based off it.
Further reading lobby-based, then party based dungeon crawler, not MMO, regardless 4.0 ED was made for this, so it maybe decent.
In the name of all thats unholy....WHY THE FUCK!?!?!?! Seriously why the fuck do the butchers at Cryptic get to make big license game. I mean fuck they went and screwed up CoH with Champions, they went and kicked the Trekkies in their collective nads and now this? Are CO and STO considerd a success that Cryptic gets to touch the D&D license?
I think they are calling it an "OMG" because they know that if they use the term "MMO" then Turbine, quite rightly, can sue their and ATARIs arses off.
Apparently the Turbine v Atari suit is settled? But I am betting that Turbine got an assurance that they retain exclusive rights to produce D&D MMOs until 2016 (which is what Atari gave them)
Cryptic might be able to get away with this "OMG" BS if that idiot hadn't said:
"We'll be using the same Cryptic technology and philosophy with our Neverwinter characters that we have in all our games. Namely, players can create just about any look they imagine. In our first release, we'll be doing the classic humans, elves, and dwarves--as well as a few special ones that I won't mention just now."
Well dufus, you just dumped yourself right in it.
If you use the same technology, or engine, or any part of the software you use in your MMOs then turbine can rightly say "This is the same - it's an MMO" and stop you releasing it until June 2016.
That is unless you want to say STO and CO were NOT MMOs?
Well - you could do that - only you marketed them and sold them as MMOs and people brought them for that reason. So if they weren't MMOs and you knew that.... well...some countries actually have laws about that sort of thing.
Fans of the Forgotten Realms want to live in the Forgotten Realms like LoTR fans wanted to live in Midde-Earth. We want to be able to travel around and visit Baldur's Gate, The Sword Coast, The Underdark, Amn and everything there is to offer in the Forgotten Realms. They don't want yet another hub style game that is all cooperative group play. I guess they weren't paying attention to what happened with the other D&D MMO. These companies continue to baffle me with their logic. They continue to make the same mistake over and over again. It blows my mind.
All this is, is an extention of the tools and abilities we/ve had with NWN to create custom content and persistant servers. The tools to make it an adequate MMO do not exist in their toolset. If they are really using the same engine, it will not work. It is already a failure in several categories as it is. Perfect IP to work with, horrible ideas and no doubt - execution.
It's ashame too because I thought it would of been a cool underdog story if NWO a game I use to play 20 years ago on the stupid prodigy service could come back in the present day to once again reign supreme.

WTF? No subscription fee?
This company is a plague.

Good idea. I hope Windows 7 doesn't have issues with it.

One of those great lines from The Secret World
I really want to bring a flash mob to their hq to inform them of how much they truly suck, maybe then they will get the point.
Very sad news indeed, to give such a great IP to such a sad developer.. Farewell massively succesfull neverwinter nights saga..
The only hope i have for this game is that it bombs really really badly and that will give other developers food for thought.
F2P/P2P excellent thread.
