Today, ArenaNet has unveiled the Ranger profession, the third of eight professions to be included in Guild Wars 2, and MMORPG.com's Michael Bitton returns to break it all down for you.
The breakneck pace of Guild Wars 2 reveals continues today with the unveiling of the Ranger profession. ArenaNet starts out by describing the Ranger profession as a “jack-of-all-trades and a master of them all as well.” OK. You’ve got my attention already. The Ranger is a familiar fantasy class to most MMO gamers, and ArenaNet doesn’t look to have strayed too far from the archetypal Ranger with Guild Wars 2. Typically, the main difference between the implementation of a Ranger class in most games is whether or not it has access to pets, and just like the original Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2’s Ranger will also have access to pets, rejoice!

Officially confirmed for some badass moves there. Whirling Defense looks awesome. Hell, didn't think actual voices would add so much to the action.
The original Ranger was near perfect. I'm glad to see they've stayed true to the essence of the profession.
Might I add...Barrage really looks like a Barrage now! Awesome.
Gotta catch em all, pokemon!
Im glad they inspired themselves with pets from them lol:D
Ranger looks badass...once again
Tho I expect ranting how WoWish the class is;)
Oh and I love the first look on cross class combos (even tho it is only combo between two rangers skills)
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
Oh MAN those videos are brutal!! That just put GW2 to first on my watch list. Sorry TSW and SWTOR, this is just epic.
To be honest the only thing "WoWish" about the ranger is the pet system. The rest is basically a revamped GW1 version.
that's what I think too
although sharks as a pet...hehe
as usual, looking good, although, most of the skills are common in this type of class, but the video was nice!
So What Now?
I've figured it out: ANet people are sadists.
Here they come, dropping their deliciously interesting pieces of information, getting you all excited only to leave you with the knowledge that for the next bit of info piece you probably have to wait a week or 2 again, with any beta far, far away in the future.
It's torture!
The Ranger page refeshed, it has FIVE videos about skills now, not only 1

Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
epic. nuff said
This looks awesome!
argh...I hoped we would finally see a sylvari or asura in those videos, but they just keep showing human and charr.
Must.... play.... now....
All skills look so epic now, heh.
Anyway we getting melee attacks just shows how they didn't forget about class combinations, they just added this versatility within each class (rangers with greatswords, heh).
Well, no confirmation of frikkin' lasers, that's just me hoping. :P I'd also like to see them transform into Street Sharks when called onto land. JAWSOME. Do you hear me ArenaNet? Street Sharks! Make it happen!
There is an Asura ranger in the new screenshots released, which you can find in our GW2 gallery.
Really enjoyed Hunters Call! most awesome and impressive skill
and shark can probably only be underwater,i hope we get TURTLE and OCTOPUS pet ^^
I just hope I can use my Flamingo again. Yes, you heard me! I my Guild Wars Flamingo! He was, of course, named Pelican.
I can almost swear that Nolan North is the Voice of the Male Ranger.
Very very cool.
Well, not with street sharks, but they also haver roller blades and hockey sticks, so that would probably break immersion. Regular non hockey wielding street sharks should work just fine though.
Wow. I have to say, that while it's only a special effect and not in any way demonstrative of the general gameplay, Hunter's Call has to be about the coolest Ranger skill I've ever seen implemented in a MMO. I can't recall another one where the subject of falconry was introduced.
Wonder if they let you have a hawk or falcon as a pet? Hmm...
Who wants a falcon when you can have a shark. Too cool.
"If all you can say is... "It's awful, it's not innovative, it's ugly, it's blah.." Then you're an unimaginative and unpolished excuse for human life" -eburn
Maybe when the shark is on land, he becomes a lawyer or a real-estate agent.
However I do hope there are more than 12 pets... hopefully 12 land, 12 amph., 12 water.
12 Total seems a little restrictive, like WoW there will most likely be a lvling pet, a raid pet, an instance pet.... and for this game, a water pet. If you dare choose the one that isnt as good as the others you will automatically be declared noob (and perhaps rightfully so), as there is no reason in a mathematical game such as an RPG to choose a creature based on looks when the best one for accomplishing your job (which is most likely DPS) is easily acquirable.
The only thing that would be worse is for them to be "normalized" to the same DPS/Skills which will render the pet as a killable DoT rather than an effective combat tool.
Who wants either if an amphibian is as good as a shark or a falcon... Everyone knows that in MMO falcons and hawks cant fly higher than your characters head once you tame them so they can be hit by someone with a sword. Theyre pretty useless.
