Might come back, based on size

Hey everyone.  I'm an old EVE player, was in closed beta, and played till right when tech 2 was coming out... then came back a bit later.  I was thinking of coming back again, but the reason I left last time is still bugging me. 

I loved the game most back when we hit 10k concurrent users.  space was full, hub stations were very full, but there was enough space to breathe still, and have fun.  I came back again most recently when we were hitting 40k concurrent users at peak times, great for the game, not great for me.  4x as many people is only slightly more space made the game feel more cramped and gave me less options.

 

however I hear the EVE-verse has expanded a bit while I was away.  my question is, what about empire space?  Its great and all that nulsec has expanded for politics, but what about my options for solo play, messing around in .5 space?  back in my day low sec space was somewhat safe because it was empty.  .1-.4 didn't have many pirates because there wern't many non-pirates to gank.  my last time around one of my old stomping grounds had all the gates camped by people tanking the sentry guns (umm... what good are they really?) where I used to only have to worry about people jumping into my belt.

 

So how much elbow room is there now?  enough for me? or has the game finally crowded me out?

    Known space hasn't expanded much. The drone regions are practically irrelevant in the greater picture apart from killing the mineral market.
    There are about 2.5k new systems in unknown space, connected to known space by constantly changing wormholes.
    It's not very populated. If you just want some small scale pvp with few people, it can be interesting.

    Known space is very populated, apart from most of 0.0. Even remote lowsec pockets have people in them.

    Btw., sentries in lowsec keep all small ships from engaging you, which means that for small ships passing through, it's very safe.

    Any low sec areas leading to null sec space is usually controlled by Alliances and their pets....well at least by the competent ones.

    Low sec in general is basically pirate space and anyone who is unfamiliar with it or the locals will more then likely be scanned down or shot down at the gates if they can't warp out fast enough to safespot or station in low sec. Your best option for solo pve is level 4 missions in Empire space. Frankly you'd probably be safer by joining a null sec Alliance and ratting in a 0.0 belt then to do so in low sec. Of course most if not all Alliances in 0.0 are pvp Alliances so you'd have to also be prepared to pvp to earn your keep as well.

    Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.

    thanks for the speedy reply.  Kinda sad that the massive amount of new space isn't really.. new space.  I was hoping they would just increase everything by like 50%, 50% more empire, 50% more nul sec ect.  but alas, I don't believe there is room for me in EVE anymore.  great game, but I guess I fell in love with the older EVE, and you young'ins and your newfangled EVE are just too much for me.

    There's loads of basically deserted hi- lo- and null-sec space even now. W-space I can't comment on, but 2500 systems seems like a lot of room.

    The record now is actually 60k concurrent users =P

    But anyways, they have added new empire systems since you left, and also wormhole systems as others have mentioned.

    As for low sec, some low sec systems are empty, and some are filled with pirates.  It depends on what region you're in. 

    There are a lot of pirates at the border systems between high sec and low sec.  Like Tama, Rancer, Old Man Star, etc.  If you go into regions like Black Rise, there are a lot of empty low sec systems. 

    From my experience, high sec doesn't lag much even when there are a lot of players.

    Actually having some fun in EVE never played it till a few weeks ago and it's been able to keep my attention since.  Better than a lot of MMOs lately haven't.

    It is a curious aspect of EVE, because of the competitive nature of the game - the increased numbers began to make certain things difficult or near impossible for certain players.

    When I first started playing EVE , I actually traded Trade Goods while working on my initial skills.  I had all the little notes about how much of each item I could carry to maximize my profit at the time. It was not long before I was no longer able to do that.  Too many people had taken up that profession and thus killed it.  I did not have the means to trade in the higher isk items.

    I decided to dabble in mining.  Had a couple anchored cans in a few belts.  It was not long before the belts were so crowded with cans that CCP changed the mechanics of it.

    I used to go ratting in belts - again, those became ever more scarce.

    Even with my less than stellar skills, I used to be able to manufacture things for myself cheaper than buying them.  That is no longer the case.

    Wormhole loot became commonplace.  PI is making POS' self-sufficient.  FW is a case of alternating blobbettes.

    One could go on and on about how the sheer number of people has made EVE a difficult game...

    ...but you adjust and you adapt.

    I'll do a little of this or a little of that, here and there - knowing that I cannot compete with the sheer number of people that play EVE - I no longer try to compete.  I used to have corporate offices in the trade hubs of five or six regions.  Now I have a single office three or so jumps out from the closest hub in a quiet area of space.

    Depending on what one wishes to accomplish in the game, yes - the number of people playing can hamper that.  If you can adjust, edge out some fun from the game - then there is no arguing against EVE being one of the best games out there.  It is why I still play.

     

    I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

    I always wondered why they havent expanded high sec. I'm a trader and more and more areas are overrun with 0,01 ISK bid wars, which are fairly anoying.

    I'm in no way saying EVE is a bad game because of it.  Honestly I think EVE might be the single best made MMO... ever.  however the game I fell in love with had more options for me on a casual level.  back when I first got into cruisers I could head to 0.4 space and have fun seeing my first Jaspet nodes, mining and hauling solo before I could even use my indie.  I had lots of fun trying different stuff out on a whim.

     

    It just wasn't like that when I last played.  my home systems were either completely mined out, or very unsafe, or both.  I could no longer go to 0.2 to find rats to test out my brand new 720's like I had back in the day.

     

    wide open space meant people with less money and worse ships could try out somewhat dangerous things, I could solo belts in my brand new stabber, with barely enough skills to fit the thing  when i first got it.  now warping into that same system is sure death because systems are busy enough, crowded enough, that it's worth a pirates time to camp a gate in some random 0.4 system.

     

    That was the game I loved.  EVE is very different now, not better or worse, just different. more people means more pirates means more everything.  however the way I want to play the game is gone.  I love what EVE has become, I think its great for the market to see a game like this do so well.  and I'd love to see more games (all games) have markets like this, crafting like this, depth like this.  however even when you put all the perfect ingredients together, it doesn't mean I'll like the food.

     

    So while I thank everyone for their input, I don't think I will be returning at this point.  its a wonderful game, which I miss dearly.  I just don't think I'll enjoy it enough where it is right now.

     

    And finally as a side note.  WoW got a lot of flak for having too many people... back in the first couple months of launch.  so this isn't the first time someone has complained "too many people in mah MMO!"

    That's because the servers were overcrowded and horribly laggy, with insane queues sometimes lasting nearly an hour or more before you could even log on.

    Hardly the same thing.

     The value of hi-sec comes from the number of players in it, really.

    As for the 0.01ers... what good would adding more hi-sec regions do? You think they wouldn't set up in there too?

     

    If the OP wants to live in a quiet secluded corner of empire, all he has to do is head over to Derelik. Place is empty.

    High-sec was only ever intended as a safe space for new players to learn.. the idea is you join a corp / alliance that has its own corner of space.

     

    they wont expand high-sec because CCP dont want you there!..  if you look at the map and the activity in non-highsec system most of them on average are completly dead!..  the only time CCP will expand space is when 0.0 see's more than 5% of the population there, xD

     Yes and no. Obviously traders will set up anywhere that can be profitable, but 0,01ers is only a problem where there's so many traders that you are underbid by 0,01 in less than 5 minutes. I dont care about 0,01 undercutting that takes place once every few days or so. However when trading becomes a matter of sitting in a station constantly updating your buy and sell orders for 12 hours to achieve anything; it's not fun. You can (and I have) find a way around this for a price, but it still would be nice to see less of it.

    The problem is rather that it's not just a matter of expanding high sec, but also adding missions and so forth to make people use the new areas. In other words it's no small task to expand high sec.

    It's not a huge deal. It just means that I cant trade properly in many areas. Some years ago that problem only existed in Jita.
