How are the controls in this game?

borockborock Member Posts: 42

Does anyone know if FF XIV is going to have the same control scheme as XI? with the number pad as the movement keys.  Or is it going to have the classic WASD movement?

I know there was a option to change the keyboard layout in XI but it wasnt anything like other mmo control schemes. Im basically wondering if they are going to use the traditional WASD movement and mouse combo as opposed to their old control system where the mouse wasn't really used much. XI had some weird controls

I think WASD + numpad is possible right now.

Mouse + kb doesn't work well enough yet.

Dang. Alright. It was always awkward for me.

I find it very hard to believe that keyboard and mouse will not be able to be used. Just does not seem like that option would be left out.

I don't think that feature has been a big priority for them so far.

Now that many testers from other MMO's have gotten to play, they'll see a lot more feedback from that issue. I would imagine that they'll set their priorities accordingly.

hope so. the game looks great. I could always buy a game pad if push comes to shove.

I know myself and a few people I know WONT buy this game unless proper support is built in for mouse and keyboard.

The previous game was a pathetic joke in this regard.

After all these years you would think they would have the brains to implement normal control interface for pc version.

as in ASWD?   They had that.    It was called "Compact Keyboard" and I hated it.

Their control system was one of the most innovative and efficient in the industry.

Edit: as for the mouse use being more popular in 14, probably.  They show them using a mouse in a lot of the demo videos I've seen and the addition of a hot bar makes mouse using possible.

I still have my Netplay Controller from FFXI and the PS2, adapted for my PC. If It can work with that, it will feel familiar to me!

Though they really need to evolve to the Keyboard+Mouse era...I know mice are relatively new and all :-)

Just tested FFXI and I.M.O it was putrid, lol. Got rid of it within 1 day, because of the controls. Was looking forward to trying FFXIV, but if controls are anything like FFXI, I will leave this one alone for sure.

After trying keyboard movement in several games I have come to the conclusion that it is just not possible to make movement as smooth using the keyboard as it is with mouse.  Everything else can be keyboard but movement and camera movement have to be mouse.

I would be dissapointed if they didnt have good keyboard + mouse support as well. It might stop me from playing if they dont implement this properly.

I wholeheartedly disagree.  I think that the num pad plus the arrow keys for the camera was really very good for the control system.  Felt very fluid.

Also on the Xbox it was extremely easy to run circles around others, not many games are BETTER with a controler, which I personally like controlers.  They're technically newer technology than a mouse.

With FFXI the keyboard / mouse functionality was a big gripe for me. Call the system they had innovating, I don't care, I didn't find it useful at all. On that note, you need to be able to control the view angle completely like you do when examplewise holding down the right mouse button in most other MMO games and try to look around. In FFXI the angle of the window was leading it's own life while I just had to deal with it, it was super annoying.

Like this one time when I tried to return to the game a year or so after I had left the first time, the camera kept getting stuck inside another mob when I was in an encounter and I wasn't able to do much at the time to change it, so I couldn't see a whole lot other then hear sounds.

I do believe this was the reason one of my best friends quit the game, he got a White Mage up to lvl 34 I believe. When inside caves and tunnels in groups and hunting mobs he was so utterly annoyed by the camera just swinging around and living it's own life. It's just not how it's supposed to be. I did play with mouse and keyboard though, so did my friend I think.

But when I play a computer game, I expect to be able to use the full functionality of a computer because there is a reason you prefer to play on said hardware. They need to step up the support to computer in FFXIV at least since the console version isn't coming out before many months later. They tried it back then and had complains, now they need to learn from that.

The people and the friends that we have lost, and the dreams that have faded, never forget them~

They're technically equal. Prior you had movement paddles on computer rigs and light source pens. The more compact (wired and wireless were also developed side by side) game pads came about at the same time the roller mouse became a cheaper alternative for the light pen in personal computers.

I still like moving to see with the mouse, but I got in to FFXI's controls in short order personally liking the keyboard over the game pad controls.

I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.

I've found the biggest cause for complaints for the controls in FFXI actually came from players who hadn't actually set it up correctly or didn't know a lot of the keyboard functions. I know it took me a while to learn that I could remove target lock in combat and move the camera freely. Also there isn't as much menu navigation as a lot of people initially think since almost everything has keyboard shortcuts if you take the time to learn them.

I'll admit the controls aren't as accessible as the keyboard and mouse setup but they were fine for FFXI and they really aren't as bad as a lot of people make out since most people don't actually give them a chance. I really don't know what to expect of FFXIV though; I know that the current setup is similar to XI but the game is only just entering beta so hopefully that will improve.

I have to jump on this bandwagon.   I am an older gamer...as such I cannot seem to get the hang of controller movement.  My camera goes every which way,  i go sideways when I want to go forward...you get the idea.

I cannot seem to acquire the necessary skills to play this game.  I won't be buying it.

I'm sure that it is my loss but I cannot stand the hours of frustration that it causes me.

To all of you that can adapt, wishing you much joy in the game.

    ^This

Nothing can beat keyboard + mouse, not implementing it is just dumb.

It should be a priority and I hope it will. Fluid controls are a big deal for many and the lack of it may be a gamebreaker no matter how good the game is.

Moving the camera with a controller is far more easier that those numbpad keys. Is just a analog stick and feels more comfortable than pushing 4 numbpad keys. Pc should have the full functional mouse.

All we can do is try to make ourselves heard and hope there are many more like us that do the same, and that SE listens.

    Exactly

Fortunately the game itself is in fairly good shape for a beta, so they can focus on the technical side for the rest of the testing phase.

I hope the controls and the UI is not the same of FFXI.

That alone put me off the game.

What records do we have from the past, how good do the SE developers listen to the (western) playerbase?

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

The first time I played FFXI was on a PS2. I very quickly found logitech's netplay controller and that was that...meaning that's simply how the game worked, and it worked well with that device. My PC at that time was a pile of junk.

A year or two later, I grabbed it for the PC, once I actually had a new PC that could run it with very high settings. Frankly, for a PC, the controls simply sucked! If this had been the first time I ever played FFXI, i probably would never have touched it again. I found an adapter on Ebay, allowing me to us the PS2's netplay controller on a PC...then I was happy again.

That said, I will prefer FFXIV to have made the jump to the modern PC control setup for MMO's, Mouse + Keyboard. Also, I don't want to have to macro every skill to be able to play with a darn, give me a UI quickbar, preferably more than one. However, I do want to be able to make custom macro's that can be dropped into the quickbar.

I didn't play WoW for very long, never even maxed out a toon on it. However, I will say that its control system felt extremely intuitive, very easy to use. I would expect a similar control system at this point in time.

    That was my point too.

The game looked interesting, but the control system literally got on my nerves.

I hope they do not use the same system or I won't play the game, that would be seriously a game breaker for me
