EVE Online: Dev Blog Update Provides Recap on Recent Outage

EVE Online's single live server "Tranquility" was recently down for an extended downtime due to technical difficulties resulting from a server move. CCP Games compensated players for the downtime by awarding them additional skillpoints for the time lost as well as a new planetary interaction focused ship. Today, CCP Yokai updates the official EVE Online dev blog to recap what happened and explain what CCP intends to do going forward to assure players to prevent future incidents such as this.

So what happened?

When we attempted to fire up the Tranquility database we experienced some failures on the new storage area network we had just put in place.  These issues were not discovered until we started running our normal cleanup jobs (these jobs touch just about every part of the database) on the database and started putting actual load on the storage area network.  Once under load the problems were discovered, but not before the database and many of the vital tables needed to operate EVE were found to be heavily corrupted.

CCP Games is well aware of the inconvenience that the outage caused to players and notes that they have a project in place that should reduce the likelihood of such an event occuring again. The Iceland-based developer also expressed appreciation for the supportive as well as the harsh comments made by players throughout the ordeal.

Read the full dev blog here for the technical details.

[Thanks cosy for the tip!]

UPDATE: A few images from the whole ordeal can be found here as well.

In a giant move like that something was bound to go wrong. I say good on CCP for coming forward and been honest. Not a lot of company's would have done it, never mind compensate the community for it.  image

Mike, for the umpteenth time, the ship was NOT part of the compensation for the downtime!  Only the 100,000 skill points were given as recompense.  The ship was a planned gift for the Planetary Interaction expansion before the downtime ever occurred.  It was pure coincidence (and a little prudent planning by CCP after the server-move mishap) that the two were given at the same time even though each was given for a different reason.

As for the Dev Blog update, explaination, gifts, and plans for going forward... my hat is off to CCP.  Once again they have proven that they are a class act.

    CCP Valar said this

To be honest, I don't like to answer posts where people are debating platforms, no matter if its Windows vs Linux, or MySQL vs MSSQL.

The answer to this question is simple, the cost of redevelopment is huge. You can't imagine the amount of code we have in T-SQL. It will always be cheaper to buy more hardware than reinvest in MySQL, an investment that may or may not give you some performance. You can't know if it will give you performance benefits until you have been able to make EVE work on it.

That is why we have not even considered changing our database platform. That's as simple as that. We are also very happy with SQL Server.

A  new ship, looks like the rorqual, but in general you can better refine it the cargo is only 100 m3

The command center cargo is 1600 m3

And the supply cargo 1.000 m3

All in all only 2.700m3, while the support supply area already is10.000 m3 on the planet.

The command center yes it has 500 m3.

Besides it has no use everything you load too export or import from custumsupport will be stolen by pirates anyway who hang at planet andt can steal out of customsupport hanger without flashing red or even a timer from 15 minutes. Is times more boring then mining. So i think if they do not patch that it will be over soon the planet mining.
