I actually been playing some Global Agenda because it isn't fantasy and it is a very compettive shooter based game. No monthly fee required to play either.
Best F2P imo are Dungeons and Dragons or Atlantica Online, Atlantica is kinda anime-ish, so you would probably like D&D. If you want to go old school, check out Ashen Empires. One of my personal favorites, but old 2d MMOs aren't for everyone.
Kingdom Heroes, Asian but kinda cool. Almost exclusively PVP based with a Kingdom war system. If you get into the US server, send me a tell or friend request: Timberwolf
Imo try DDO, Spellborn or Allods
I'm also waiting for LOTRO f2p. I used to be a subscriber, and I loved the game! I'm checking out DDO in the meantime...I'm not too far into it yet, but it seems different and interesting so far.
As for "i hate those anime/asian style games," I think that's being unfair, maybe even a little xenophobic. I'm not really a big anime fan, but I've played some MMOs from Asia that were better than some American/European ones. Just because there are bad ones doesn't mean there aren't good ones. Just as we "Westerners" make plenty of bad video games along with the good.
It saddens me how much prejudice I see in MMO forums against entire categories of games, like "f2p" or "Asian." In my humble opinion, that's like saying "omg, all movies sux!!!1!!" or "all novels from England are not worth reading." Games deserve to be judged on an individual basis- NOT because of where they come from, or on preconceived notions about their payment systems.

Rieberry, the very great majority of Asian/Korean f2p games share some common things that some gamers don't appreciate. While I haven't played everyone of them, the ones I did play had very similiar combat mechanics, androgynous male characters, and a tiered character progression model. While these things aren't inherently bad, some people don't like them. Personally I'm not a fan of level-based and auto-attack games which is what most of them are. So while I understand your point of how people shouldn't stereotype, too many of the games come from the same mold.

I'm playing Dungeon Fighter Online (which is nearly as huge as starcraft in Korea atm) and i'm having a blast. It makes for a great secondary game, but isn't deep enough to hold your attention indefinitely. It's like a Final Fight / Street Fighter 2 side-scrolling arcade game with indepth controls, and very good at what it does.
It's IP blocked to Europe though, so you have to be in the states or canada to play it (or you can weasel your way into the Korean/Japanese versions).

Waiting On: GW2, TSW, Archeage, The Rapture
Well, I'd take Asian/Anime good looking art over, cartoony looking art. but.. on topic, DDO is pretty good, and i think Allods is decent for a free game

Name these games you think are great examples of eastern/asian/anime style games, please. I just want to see what you think is good. I've played them all and I haven't found ONE different from the other. FFXI does NOT count, as that is a Japanese game with an IP that's been around long before MMOs. All the rest, in my opinion look nice, sound nice but lack any soul or true depth or the controls are so wonky or oldschool(like click to move) that I can't even consider them at all.
This has nothing to do with racism in the slightest as I'm sure the others who don't like these types of games can agree. I can probably name a ton of the american FTPs(are there any besides DDO?) that are of the same quality and suck just as bad. Except the eastern market is the one that makes FTPs on a consistant basis.
I'm waiting for F2P LOTRO as well. Will be my first time playing since open beta. I'm not into Lord of the Rings or MMOs that are heavy on cramming story down your throat and trying to make you a hero but if its free... I'll give it another chance. Why not. We should all be questing buddies! Start a guild or clan or fellowship or whatever its called in LOTRO.
I started play Allods while waiting for F2P LOTRO... so far it's going well. Interesting quests, decent graphics, and the community is actually pretty helpful as well.
Okay, I'm not allowed to say FFXI because what? It's a big-name MMO? Because it's based on something that already existed (just as there are MMOs based on existing animes)? That's ludicrous, in my opinion. Does World of Warcraft not count as a good Western pay to play because it was based on the very popular Warcraft games before it?
Mabinogi I played for a bit, and I thought it was very inventive and not at all run-of-the-mill or a Wow-clone, like many recent Western MMOs have been. It's only downside was dated graphics, but I've heard they're concerned about keeping it at low hardware requirements.
However, I suppose if I don't agree with everyone's stereotyping, I might as well just stay out of these sorts of threads :P I can only see myself arguing this over and over to no real effect. I will therefore leave you all to it!
The term Asian Grinder is derived of games made in Korea and perhaps China. The FF games are made in Japan and excluded from this "stero type" that seems so offensive because Japan isnt a source of all the F2P crap that continues to flood the market on what seems like a weekly basis.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.

Thank you. YOu took the words right out of my mouth.
you're cute but a bit too self humbling
I don't know why but Kingdom Heroes is actually really fun. I rarely play F2Ps and but it caught my interest and I've been playing nonstop for 3 weeks almost. I came from Darkfall/ Starcraft 2 Beta before I got into it
