Looking for a good sandbox mmo. Played Pre-cu SWG and loved it, played Eve and liked everything but the interface. Looking for something similar to those games. Thanks!
Oddly enough, I think they are planning on changing the UI in EvE, according to some recent information.
I do miss that community feeling. I loved hanging out in cantinas. I was a master smuggler but all I really did was push neutron pixie in Theed. If you played around launch, and you used Neutron Pixie or Booster Blue on a regular basis, then I guarantee that you made me a millionaire (and belated thanks for the business btw). Anyway I'm looking for something that gives me great flexibility in play styles. I am tired of mob slaying right now and could really use a game where I just can hang out and still accomplish something without going to the next quest or the next instance. Don't get me wrong, I smacked the shit out of some of Sauron's best for the last few years but I'm tired of killing stuff and really would like to do something else for a while.
There is only us, there is only this. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way. No day but today.
EVE, Perpetuum, DF(kind of), and MO. Those are pretty much the only sandboxes I've bothered to follow. I'd play MO, but I just can't justify the box price and the sub until it gets polished. Perpetuum looks promising if you happen to like mechs. DF may as well just become a themepark with FFA PVP. EVE is too 'spacey' for me and I believe breaking out of Alcatraz would prove more intuitive than playing EVE.
I'd love a quality sanbox game, but none of the big names will make/fund one. I have my fingers crossed that MO really hits its stride in the next six months.
I forgot Xyson and don't feel like rewriting to include it. I don't know much about it, but the terraforming looks like something I'd enjoy.
I recommand Mortal Online if you can get by First Person View.
They have quite a deep system and is smooth launch.
However, they are still trying to work their ass off fixing bugs, (is just realeased 1 month ago) so if you consider some new contents I doubt it will happen in these 2 months.

Yeah I made a character for SWG named Big Mama and she had a big butt and gray fro who danced in the bar for days straight! LOL
Sucks that the new one wont have that . .. there is housing in Darkfall but you cannot drop anything from your inventory on the floor or decorate your table or anything like that. Decorations are rare drops which include a personal safe box, player vendor, garden, craftin station, beds, furniture, the epic head of a badger!, slot machine, etc.
I can think of quite a few people who do not ever kill mobs and spend most of their time chatting and harvesting/crafting. It is funny because these guys end up with the most HP and stuff from the harvesting/crafting gains but since they rarely PVP or PVE they don't even know how to put it to good use . .. meanwhile friends are killing mobs or whatever and do not have close to as much HP and stuff as the harvester hanging out at the player city all the time . .. lol

Are there two Mortal Onlines? The reason I ask is because it is news to me that there was a Mortal Online that launched smoothly. I do know of an Alpha client that was sold to potential customers...
Ah the sandbox MMO, my pipe dream! I'm in pretty much the same boat as you(without a pipe) and as a result I've returned to the world of Ultima Online(PRS not EA). I still haven't see a game that has half the sandbox elements that UO of yesteryear had, and that 'yesteryear' is starting to go grey. EVE sounds like it comes close, although the sci-fi genre, spandex pantaloons and a space ship as an avatar do not call to me. Likewise paying a subscription for a first person shooter(with swords!) aka Darkfall is not my cup of tea.
I'm after a game world that not only has space for, but actively encourages roleplaying and player interaction. This doesn't mean forced grouping or raiding or not having a valid solo playstyle, but rather providing a framework through which players are interdependent to varying degrees for survival, just as we are in the 'real world'.
I'm after a game world that provides more tools than just combat, and I'm not talking about some half-arsed tacked-on crafting system in which every individual has alts(or mains) with every craft skill. I'm talking about a game that offers a variety of activities that players can partake in, shape or even create.
I'm after a game world that offers some semblance of realism, that actually adds to gameplay rather than detracts from it. For example, if I kill a deer, I would expect to be able to get some meat and hide from the corpse. I wouldn't expect to find 20 gold coins on it, nor would I wish to know how I retrieved those coins...
The reason I have just chosen to start playing Ultima Online again is because it is the closest thing(still!!) that I have found to the world I am looking for. I wouldn't ever touch EA's UO again but there are some really talented developers out there who are doing a lot with RunUO.
In UO I can:
Go wherever I wish in game from day 1.
Build a house(and if custom housing is in, build that house tile by tile if I wish!) to store my plunder, decorate it, sell items from vendors. I can build this house on the majority of the overland portions of the game.
Build a town for my guild (I don't think EA ever implemented townships)
Dress myself in a variety of clothing and armour that can be dyed or made from coloured metals so I appear(albeit in 2d mid-90s graphics) distinct. I can dress as an orc, a pirate, a blacksmith etc so my characters *looks* the part.
I can buy a boat, dress in the aforementioned pirate outfit, take to the seas and find a fisherman's vessel to board(hopefully they are afk macroing so I can kill them easily :P)
I could fish up fish and special loot, find treasure maps and dig up the chest and kill of the spawn protecting it or go pick some treasure chests in a dungeon.
I could be on my thief, scouting out that dungeon where the picker is filling his bags with loot, and then *yoink* steal it from under his nose.
Gotta cut this short as I've gotta go but if anyone is curious about UO, shoot me a PM. It ain't perfect but it does the job quite well for now

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

Or else, I can't think of any good MMOs recently.
