Any good city/population sim type game out there?

FibsdkFibsdk Member Posts: 1,112

I'm wondering if any of you know of a good sim game on the market worth trying where you can build/manage a city that doesn't involve "winning" a map through war, trade or other. I tried CiV4, Settlers, Black & White- While they all have elements that are fun and what I'm looking for, they all are focused on war or beating an opponant in some sort of race. I just want a game i can focus on the building and managing part. I don't mind it has war elements but shouldn't be a driving force of the game.

I've looked into Sim City 4 but wonder if there are others worth checking out

The city building mmo is City XL. You can play it in single player mode too I believe. It was pretty aweful at release. Make sure to try the demo first.

You can check http://www.citybuildergames.com/ for more info on various city building games.

    According to the site:

    1/28/2010

"The latest news has come down the pipeline from MonteCristo games.  The Planet offer of their city building game "Cities XL" has been cancelled.  As of March 8, 2010 the planets (multiplayer aspect) will be closed.  The game will be rebranded as Cities 2011 and will be re-released at some point in time which is not immediately known."

I would prefer a non mmo which is why I wrote in this section. Getting tired of the MMO scene and figured I would play some single player games for awhile until something "good" comes out. Thanks for the link I will see if there is anything there

That was one of those games that sounded interesting and I meant to try at some point but then completely forgot about until I saw this post.

I always loved the SimCity games and played from the first one all the way up through SimCity 2000 or something like that. I would spend hours upon hours designing what I felt were the perfect cities with complex layouts. A real blast.

So when I had heard about City XL I was intrigued, the one thing I always wanted to see SimCity add was actual player neighboring cities that you traded and worked with to help both of you expand.

Shame to see that game was such a failure. Now that I made this post though I might have to go pick up one of the SimCity games again, so much fun.

Pretty much CitiesXL has been the only major city sim in the last decade.  The single-player aspect wasn't as good as the multiplayer aspect.  The multiplayer added a huge dimension for city sims.  Trading with players in a persistant world adds a different dimensionality.  However, because of how cities are saved on the servers, its simply to expensive to host such a game.  Like you could take a horrible plot of land that is only good for tourism and make a metropolitan out of it through trade.

The single player game is not as good.  You are also forced to follow a socialist model in some regards.  Oil, Health, College, and Electricity are public entities in CitiesXL.

I think I may have found a game that sounds fun called Tropico 3. I'm going to give it a shot. Between that and SimCity 4 I should be covered for awhile :).

    Thanks

I recommend Dawn of Discovery. The main campaign involves fighting, but you can skip that and create a custom game with no enemies or objectives and just build up an empire on a random map. You can also turn off disasters and select different starting conditions. The gameplay is like a cross between Sim City and The Settlers.

Lol, I have save file in B&W2 where I never stepped into the next zone, and instead kept building up on the same island. Had around 1700 in population and tons of skyscrapers. Was really a marvel to look at, and it hardly chugged my system up.

Oh, and the sim city 4 statement is reminding me to pop that in for a bit. I made a custom region that resembles SoCal and I've been adding to it bit by bit for years.

~Btw, Cities XL's multiplayer was shut down in march. It's only single-player now.

I loved Black & White 2, it's such a fun city builder/real-time strategy. One of the few games that I didn't want to complete each level and just finish building my huge town.

But there's some crappy bugs, such as your army and and 'pet' to get stuck between buildings.. but put that aside and it makes for a very good game. I prey that there's a B&W 3 =)
