My Thoughts

Here are some random thoughts I have about this game...and possible improvements.....eh yeah flame retardant suit on.

1. I would like to see range come into play.... I believe that escorts should be short to medium range. Cruisers Medium to long range. and Science....well I believe that they should have long medium and short range. Reasons...I think it would make the game a little more challenging and take more player skill and ship mod load out into account rather then just mashing keys. Maybe ranges in weapons too?

2. Coming from EvE and know that this game is NOT anything like EvE, I believe that this game could take some cues from EvE. IN the Star Trek Universe when you see Fleet Combat...IE "First Contact" Picard took control of the Fleet against the Borg....I believe that there should be some form of Fleet Command screen or option to direct focused fire at single targets....I mean other than having everyone on TS or Vent. SO that everyone involved that isn't part of "Chartered Fleet Org" that is in an instance knows what their role is.

3. Death Penalty. I know something is coming down the pipe for a death penalty, and I am probably going to get major s***t for saying this…but I believe if you don’t have the skillz than you pay the price and lose your ship and some mods….start back in the light cruiser unless you have the energy necessary to buy the class of ship you just lost….maybe add some skill points lost….or rank too if you die to often. Seriously I couldn’t care less about how serious a penalty we are talking about….death in EvE was expensive…and I have not seen the like since I left EvE. As for me BRING IT ON CRYPTIC!!!

4. Flying skillz. In all the videos I have watched…just about every Captian comes into the encounter and pulls up to his target and stops dead in space and takes all kinds of fire droping structure to near zero npc go boom and on to your next target hulled and on fire with out any kind of weapons off line? Or sensors are down capatain! REALLY???? I mean moving doesn’t help Defense? To tie this all together….standing still at dead stop makes your ship into and Apartment building in space…BIG TARGET NO MISS!!! Moving should increase defense and make it harder to hit your target and take fire. Now, I am saying this because I don’t believe any one has actually tested this to date…I can’t my game machine is down and has been for about 4 weeks…this machine can’t do the graphx.

Again I am just tossing around some things from my observations. To make the game a little more of a challenge.

     1) I have no problem with some range limitations, though going to far doesn't really suit the IP; it works fine for EvE, but for ST range wasn't as much of a factor.

    2) You would have to change core elements of the game for this to be useful to people. It's not a bad idea, it's just that except for a few select missions there is absolutely no reason for people to group up. Heck, in STO it's not uncommon to join a PvP match or Task Force with other players and have no one say anything.

    3) For a harsh death penalty, you are going to need to stick with Eve; even with the death penalty (optional it seems) STO is working on, Cryptic has made the choice to not make it too harsh. If they did, and forced the death penalty on everyone (the only way most in STO would use such a system), they would quickly lose most of the subscribers they still have. STO is an ultra-casual game, and if you turn it into Eve, then those casual players will just go elsewhere. Crytpic can't afford that right now.

    4) As of the end of open beta, moving made you no more harder to miss than sitting completely still does; in fact, if you pay attention during ship combat you will see that you very rarely miss the NPCs (and vice versa) no matter how fast you go or what erractic maneuvers you take. Once again, that's just how the game's engine works and to change the system you need to change the engine.

To have a harsher death penalty (if most people actually want it), the one thing they would have to do first is fix the DSE's. I can't remember how many times I'd zone in and get jumped by 8-10 ships as soon as I zoned in. If that happens with the death penalty you suggest, it'd be time to buy another ship. They would also need to make the over levelled DSE's despawn in the low level zones. Quite a few times, I've zoned into a dse in sirius sector only to find +30-40 ships. A couple hits and boom!, time to buy another ship.  For whatever reason, they have never bothered to fix the flaws with the DSE's that have been there since beta.  Either they can't due to some engine limitations or they won't it's not quite clear which.

Not a big fan of EVE.  Even though I can recognize that it is an extremely deep, rich, and complex game, I find it a bit dull.  I still would consider playing it if not for the combo of FFA PvP and severe death penalty.

That being said, I'd be more likely to play STO if it was just a reskinned version of EVE.  EVE is more like Star Trek than STO is.

    I am sorry M8t...

STO is like .. ..let me see .... You know when you see a Dog thats been hit by a car on the freeway .... and its back and insides have been spread all over the road .... but its still trying to lift its head ..and get up...!

Well all you would like to do is shoot it..to put it out of its missery...!

Now thats the way i feel about STO.... !

First, Congratulations this is one of the few constructive posts I have seen recently.

Based on my experience from Close beta, I completely agree about the death penalty, it has to be there and should involve destruction or at least disabling, but just respawning promotes zerging instead of careful planning.

I would say that STO could use pointers from Eve, but unfortunately STO is a themepark while Eve is a sandbox. Imho STO should have gone to a sandbox model  with minimum story, probably that was discarded because the IP, but the intrinsic nature of star trek universe is easier to manage but the main issue would be the chain of command required in the STO factions that it is not an issue in Eve because gulds cover that part.

You're thinking in the right direction.  Space should feel vast, not heavily instanced.

The other problem is as I've said in a few other threads.  The ship should be the playground, then space.  More like SWG:  JTL, but on a more massive scale.

The thing that turns me off about EvE is that contrary to persistent whispers that they were going to implement it in the game, the ground game does not exist (but again, the ship being the playground would alleviate some of the boredom associated with this).  There really isn't much of a ground game in STO, either.

Old School SWG - "I paid you 1,000,000 credits not for you to slice my Krayt weapon for me... I paid you 1,000,000 credits to give it BACK to me."

Finally a post worth answering image

Your first point is valid. Albeit you mite not be aware but weapons do have drop offs in dmg done based on speed, range to ship, ship model and weapon model. So if your in a Escort at full speed firing weapons your going to have a slightly different dmg done then a cruiser. The max range limits need to differ but we will see if that changes.

The fourth point people are often not aware of exists in the game already. If your ship slows down, the defense rating decreases. This depends on ship model, stations, skills and so on so forth. Engine skills actually have a impact on how much damage you take via manuverablity boosts to defense ratings.

Theres a lot more going on then some people are aware in the game. Especially in ground and space PVP. One of the biggest mistakes I see people make in Space pvp is going into a reverse manuver to line up there shot. This decreases there defense immensely and I can take out most people who do that.
