that no matter what class you pick you can join any side. like a jedi join the empire or a sith join the republic? i read it come were long ago. any truth to this?

No, well, at least not yet.
In an interview it was said you would not be able to swap allegiances, at least not in the beggining. He probably meant it would still be considered, but currently it's a no.
They'll no doubt add it in an expansion. It makes balancing PvP easier and it provides for an awesome story arc.
I think all that they have right now is the "good/bad" thing going on. For example you can be a good jedi, making good moral choices. Or a bad one making bad/evil choices. This doesnt mean you will switch sides, or turn into a sith. It just means that your moral standing is one way or another. This is just speculation, and will most likely be different by release.
It would be great if it was so, would make it matter the way you behave. It's alway a bit weird in MMO when someone who is supposed to be on the side of good is acting out like an evil asshole without consequences to himself.
