MOURNING SCAM Seeming more and more likely... and Mourning forums cover it up...

radlinradlin Member Posts: 266

I have only cruised the Mourning website a few times, and the Mourning forums a couple of times. Not an hour or so ago, I am in the General forums and someone named MadAsCrap or something like that puts up a message that he innocently gave them his credit card for pre-order and now sees that they took out $950-something dollars and he is threating a lawsuit against them.

Okay maybe this is just a prankster... but he gave out his email and name and everything. Said he tried to contact them a few times thru their email with no response and so he had no other choice but to post on the forums. Didn't look much like just a guy having fun but rather like someone really pissed off to me. I know I would be pissed if I have that kinda money ripped off me.

I hope that this is only a joker and if so, that's not cool either.

What makes me suspicious however was within moments they completely got rid of his thread and it is nowhere to be found anywhere that I saw on their forum boards. It seems that they should have responded in a professional manner to me and let him know of the actions he could take and what they were going to do, but to try and cover it up by simply trashing it looks awfully suspicious to me. I don't know, just an observation.

I pre-ordered Mourning and after I found out that they would likely go with regional servers I decided to cancel the pre-order.  I was surprised that there was no way to cancel other than sending them an email but having done this the order was cancelled and nothing was taken from my card.

I don't know why people are using scare tactics against this game but there is no real evidence to support what they are saying.

    Wow.

First of all, Eric... I would cancel your credit card and get a new one ASAP just to be on the safe side.

I also saw this post just seconds before it was deleted by them and thought it was probably just a prank.. didn't want to post about it here (or be the first to post about it) as it will only likely cause harm to their initial sales.  The mourning name was madashell I think, but not real sure. I read it pretty fast then went out and wanted to come back not even a moment later and the thread was gone.

That does make it look a lot more suspicious to me as well, but I can also see how they didn't want to have such a post just lying around for all their fanbase to read, epsecially if it was just BS.  I guess they would want to get rid of it pretty damn fast too though if it was a real legit post against them.  Either way, I do agree that just trashing it without so much as word is very suspicious.  Almost like killing someone in the movies and then quietly dumping their body in a big lake without a peep.  If it was a prank why not just post so and laugh at the guy and tell him to send proof of his bank statement or something and let him strangle on his own rope?  But to just "hush-hush" delete it?  Hmmmm.

All I know is that I wouldn't pre-order that game.  And If I did have my credit card info with them and a pre-order signed up, I would definately cancel it and cancel the card with my bank and get a new card asap.  Better to be safe then sorry.  It would be a real pain in the azz to get money back from Romania.  Scams happen all the time from overseas, but this would be the first I've heard of with a huge mmo, especially one known about for as long as they have been around.  - You can always pay for the damn game after it is up and running and proven to be a legitimate and worthy game.

I dunno.  I do know that they have a lot chaos going on over there in their forums.  Seems like they ban more people then they actually have regular posters to me.

    * Another thing I gotta ask about their forums over there... Why is the one word that they blank out of all their posts suddenly is the word "scam"???  If anyone types the word scam in any forum post, it shows as "****".  So now you got people posting crap like " S C A M" or "Scram" or "S.cam" instead of scam so they dont have four asteriks replace their wording.  Another odd Hmmmm.  Atleast to me.

Considering how long they had my pre-order information, I would say this is a crock of BS, plain and simple.

Someone or a group of someones appear to have a basic vendetta and enjoy playing it out on their forums to create havoc.

Do I blame the moderators for doing thier job? No. They are volunteers and trying to keep the forums a good place.

Many players have pre-ordered games from other sites, myself included. Never having been billed until it was shipped.

The most recent pre-order I have done, Asherons Call Throne of Destiny. So, I have several out there. Then again, I do use a pre-paid card for online purchases, so there isn't much there to start with (a little protection for myself) :)

One player's great game is another players derisive snort!

While it may sound like total BS, the thing that really bothers me is the fact that minutes after the topic was created, they deleted it. That's very disturbing, I mean, wouldn't most normal companies just either:

    A. respond to it giving the poster a reason/answer etc..

    B. Lock it and tell said person to contact support

Or something along those lines? I mean, what are they trying to signal by deleting the thread? That kind of bothers me.

  • Stuka1000Stuka1000 Member UncommonPosts: 955

Deleting the thread is down to the moderators not the Devs so I wouldn't read too much into that.  As for the guy who so called lost $$$ off his CC, what can I say other than 1) Credit cards these days have fraud protection & 2) it would be pretty dumb to commit CC fraud when everyone knows who you are.

If this post was indeed true then the customer would claim his money back from the CC company and then said company would investigate the fraud, all leading to one thing which would be the Romanian guys getting the shaft and some jail time.  Personally I think this post is BS and just the latest in a series of attacks against the game.

Yep it does not make sense that hundreds pre ordered and just one person had his card charged early. If it was a scam they would have hit everyones card simultaneously and gotten out of town quick. The main site as well as any other Mourning related sites would be in a uproar right now if that happened. As far as the attacks go quite frankly I suspect it is just one or 2 people with multiple logins. My own specualtions right now is that either the Devs are short on money for release/open beta or the game is not ready and needs a delay. And that is just specualtion, not facts.

Coming at this from a developer standpoint, regardless of what they do a post like this is going to cause problems. If they lock it, someone else will register an account and post the same thing "confirming" the story, etc.

However, I do want to say this. Whenever possible, you should pre-order games through established 3rd party web sites unless you're certain you can trust the company. For example, it's probably OK to buy something in Sony's online store, because Sony's been around a while and is unlikely to run into any problems or snags in their development.

If you're dealing with a company that is on their first title or two, there are a few reasons to want to go through a 3rd party to buy the software.

    * If the company runs out of money before releasing a program they really do intend to release, you don't lose anything.

    * A site like amazon or ebgames will have an easy cancellation system that has less room for errors.

    * A site like amazon or ebgames that's been around forever and has a good reputation won't mysteriously charge your credit card

Note that I'm not saying there's any validity in the post, nor ragging on the game or anything else. If you look at, say, Nexus, Nexus had a problem where their server wasn't correctly secured and the credit card numbers and names of every person who played ended up exposed on the public internet.

Another defense is to use PayPal's Debit Card. This can only draw from PayPal's cash pool, and not from other sources (even if they are registered with PayPal). So you can transfer in whatever the pre-order price is, and leave it there gaining intrest while you wait on the game. If they hit PayPal, you have the usual Mastercard protections but they also aren't going to get any more than you have in your cash pool.

Prepaid Mastercard and Prepaid Visa have this same trait, you can't get hit with a charge unless the money is there to start with. So they can't hit you for a ton of money. :-)

    Interesting..

Just a note to people. There are no real method of cancelling an order unless you have independent statements that show the order was cancelled. A company can charge you at any time once they have your details. You have to argue for your money back after it is charged, so documentation is critical.

There are a couple of means to hinder or stop a transaction. One is cause an error that the time of a debit by not having the funds or modify master details of you credit card at the retail/dealer’s web site, like the expire date.

If the person was making a prank when they posted the news of their loss, then I see the joke as a hit back from the disrespect shown to fan community. Mourning’s development team really needs to spend a day or two doing a PR stunt to make the fans happy. Screen shots, progress status, schedule time lines, etc.

Hi there. I'm a moderator on the Mourning forums. And yes, I was the one who deleted that thread.

First of all, I sent him a PM explaining to the poster why I did it. We normally never delete threads, but with the current rumors, the last thing we want is someone stirring up more trouble with false claims. When we're forced to delete threads, we at least try to explain our actions to the people involved. I told him who to contact, and that if that failed, then I honestly think he should get a lawyer ASAP and do something about it. In either case, it didn't belong on a public forum (at least not until his story had been verified). So far he hasn't replied though. (He hasn't even been online since he posted it, which doesn't exactly make him look like someone eager to get his money back)

And yes, I assumed it was a false claim, for several reasons:
1: So far, he's the only one to report anything like this. If I were to scam people and abuse their CC info, then I'd obviously grab all the money I could *at one time* from all the people who's given their CC info, rather than get $955 from *one* person, and then give him time to warn everyone else.
2: The Mourning team doesn't even have access to the CC info themselves. It's handled by a separate company. Of course, that company could be scammers as well, but that's pretty unlikely.
3: A lot of people lately have tried to stir up trouble, for no other reason than because they can, dislike the game or dislike the developers. If you've been following the game, you probably know that there was some recent trouble with another website, and a lot of their community came to stir up as much trouble as they could. But some people are willing to go quite far just to stir up trouble.

And finally, in case his story wasn't made up, I obviously took his name and informed all the other moderators about the post, and what I had done. So if his story is confirmed, then we can
1: Contact the original poster to inform him, and
2: Warn everyone else who's preordered (We're moderators, we have nothing to do with the devs, and *if* they're scamming people, then we're not going to help them)

Hope that clears it up. If you have any further questions, it might be easier to PM me on the Mourning forums. I don't usually keep up with this place. Was just pointed to this thread by someone else. ;)

Life is like a grapefruit. It's sort of orangy-yellow and dimpled on the outside, wet and squidgy in the middle. It's got pips inside, too. Oh, and some people have half a one for breakfast

WTF does spoonbender mean they don't delete threads.

I have personally read several threads there that were deleted overnight. If you don't trust me just ask some of the people that were banned from their site for posting legitimate concerns. Concerns that would have been easilly handled if the devs were any good at keeping the community informed.

Not deleting threads  LMAO  They delete any thread that in any way points to their incompetance or paints Mourning in a bad light. Instead of solving the problem by posting info to the community they ban ppl......lots of ppl.

Haha Tiamat you can't delete this....Mwahahahahaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!

Oh noes now your going to get sued Groundzero!

The way I feel about the Mourning forums is like we the fans are all in a concentration camp and tiamate is the guard bringing food and escorting some of us to the gas chambers because we questioned the validity of the game. image

Lol..It's unlikely that I'm going to get sued over my opinion.

But yea that's kinda the way it felt.

And I'm sure there is no end to the whitnesses that will attest to the points put into my previous post.

Lol they said they were going to try and sue me for harrassment then posted my Ip address and encouraged fans to mess with me. image

Ya like I'm going to spend hours of my precious time hacking through a firewall just to do somthing to your computer that will probably not work.
  • superhero13superhero13 Member Posts: 170

This game is not a scam. I personally got to view the alpha (Thanks Sergei)..which while buggy...(I mean come on it was an alpha)...was all there.

People are letting their minds run away with them on this one. I mean come on. You are letting some rumor turn into conjecture when you have no way to verify anything. If you are scared...dont buy it. Then go somewhere else while we play it.

    Its as simple as that.

  • GrunchGrunch Member Posts: 493

All the "rumors" are rooted from their own website. How can a game be so close to release with such a huge lack of information about it? I wouldnt doubt these guys are still in school working on the game during computer class.

This is such a stupid post- like all the other Mourning is a scam posts. All the scam posts were started by the same ppl on the Mouring forums and also here.

Mourning is real - Open beta is starting on 28 feb.

Essentially the whole fuss that started over the last 3 weeks was due to a few ppl posting idiotic things. The devs perhaps over-reacted but so would you if a few ppl were jeopardising your work for no good reason.

Everyone should step back and focus on the game.

What game? Not enough info on their website to idicate that they are really working on a game due to release very soon. People fall for the dumbest scams maybe stav1 is just another one of those people. image

Go over to IGN Grunch and do a search for Mourning.  Plenty of info there.  Just because you got banned from the site doesn't mean that this game all of sudden became a scam.

MMO Vet since AOL Neverwinter Nights circa 1992. My MMO beat up your MMO. =S

  • Those dev's are the biggest bunch of assholes i have ever seen. If it aint a scam i would be surprised if they aint just a bunch of kids or something. I have never known developers like them. In fact they dont even seem like developers, have they ever said anything thats made them seem like knowledgeable businessmen or programmer or whatever? They just attemp to speak in good english (but end up speaking it terribly), act complete idiots, and do some of the stupidest things ive ever seen.

If i was to roll my age back a couple of years back into school, i would spam and flame the hell out of their forums.

And to those who want to defend the game, open your eyes and take a good look at whats happened. Otherwise i dont care what you have to say, probably wont be checking back on this thread anyway.

For them to respond the way they have been, something must of hit home, these are all signs of stress on a company under pressure to get the job done, and its probably not headed that way.
  • superhero13superhero13 Member Posts: 170

"Something must have hit home"....hmmm what does that mean?

Perhaps that crackpots are tarnishing something that the devs put a lot of time and effort into.

    Keep working hard guys!! Thanks.

One thing you learn when you have been around MMO's enough is NEVER.... repeat NEVER make predictions about beta start dates or worse yet release dates.

You realise since you posted this, that the Beta has now been pushed back. So before you rush to type a reply saying "hey its only like a few days." Read the first lines again. Or you risk looking like someone who is trying to convince others they know what they are talking about,  (french accent) A second Timea image
