8600gts Fan going out. Cheap sollution? no, $100 aint cheap.

So the title say's it. I have found a fan and heat sink that people, "say" works on their 8600gts. Do I trust that for 10 bucks plus shipping. Or look at a budget card for $30, or a little less plus shipping? What ever the anwere, loosing performance, is not what Im shooting for, as this card barely does what I need, but it does it.

Oh it's a 256mb card, ddr3 128 bit.

    just get an 9800gt or something. they are cheap as hell and good enough for any mmo.

    Anything under 70-80 bucks will not be as good as what your old card was.

    Cheapest would be to try to replace fan for sure.

    Radeon HD 4650 or Radeon HD 4670 the 4670 is around 70-75 bucks and would be a better card than your old one.

    Do some searching and might find a deal on one that will be a bit cheaper.

    just get a new card there are plenty below 100$and if you check newegg.com or other similar site you can use those price to bargain your way out at your local shop.
    not any card are worth more then 150$
    and this month you ll probably get some that are worth 200$ for 100$since everybody is broke from the chrismas shopping!

    in fact saw an ati 5670 (dx11)model for
    95 $very good quality for the price.if you cant afford that just skip buying card

    if donnybrook was in wow or other game i would buy 4 ati 5670 and put them in quadcrossfirex.but the trouble is mmo wont
    benefit from all that power.only solo game can benefit from that horsepower!
    so that mean only one ati 5670 is plenty
    even a 1 gig ati 5670 card is cheap
    but dont buy that if your using 32 bit os
    512 mb is enough for a 32 bit os for all the other using 64 bit os get the 1 gig
    version its still only 124 $ max and all 64 bit os user can always benefit from more memory since we re limited at 16 gig of ram (and microsoft can unlock that with the flip of a switch)

    Well if you believe the heat sink works and trust the seller thats your cheapest option.

    Any card under $30 would be slower than a 8600GTS, unless you could find a sweet deal on a used card.

    $50-$60 can get you a GT 220 or a HD 4650 both are a improvement over a 8600GTS.

    Cheapest card that I could find that would be 1 step up from your 8600GT is the 4650 at $45  :

    Note that DDR2 or DDR3 can make a good difference.

    Now if you want to go another 3 steps higher above the 7900GT ( and thus a serious improvement over your 8600GT ) that can be had for $52 with the GT220 :

    The $45 4650 you mentioned is 64bit, that will seriously cripple its performance, you want a 128bit version.

    7900GT is a big no no for todays games, the G70/G71 architecture is outdated, a 7900GT can just about keep up with a 8600GT for todays shader intensive games.

    Correct solution is to grab a case fan for 50 cents and a rubber band and strap that sucker on there. Had to do that for a few months on a computer we called frankenstein cuz it was a mix of random left over parts.

    It worked fine.. the rubber band was necessary to hold the whole heat sink on though as it was designed to only stay on by thermal paste which had worn loose. So yours should be an even easier fix, some zip ties or something :)


    Then save up for a $100 Radeon 4850.

    who made the video board?  If its a company like BFG with lifetime warranties, just call them up let them know whats going on and they'll replace it for free.  No, you dont need to have filled out a warranty card or anything like that.  Ive done it twice, and both times the video board that went out was no longer in manufacturing so they upgraded it.  One card was over 3 years old.  Oddly enough it was the fan both times

    I think EVGA has the same policy

    For $30 you can get a new GPU fan.

    According to those charts you are right, strange that Tom's Hardware would rate both the 4650 DDR2 and the 7900GT higher than the 8600GT on their hierarchy chart then.

    Still it was clear already that the GT220 is the best buy if you are on a really tight budget, it is only $8 more than the 4650. Your chart ( from Tom's ) shows this as well.

    Thanks Y'all for this info. I was 10 bucks from having the money this am, but my stomache won the argument, and grocery's got bought instead.

    I guess I'll have to find a fan that will fit in between that card and the other little card next to it, and be ready to try the rubber band trick when this fan quits.

    The stock card sucks air out, yet Im asumming when I go with the rubberband sollution, I'll have the fan, blow air on to the heat sink, as that shroud which encloses the lot, looks like it wont be part of the card any more, when I pull that all off.

    honestly i got to say you are right the cheappest solution is to add the biggest
    cheapest fan you can find and screw it as close as you can your graphic card
    by the way make sure the fan is pulling air from the case out of the case
    since blowing dust in computer part is never a good idea

    i baught a new case antec 300 for 65 $ at my local shop
    and its probably a good idea to go that route since you can add 2 more fan at the front (yes there is a bug screen,cleanable)so no biggy sending air in from the front of my 300.
