Cryptic's business practices and the posters here who defend them so enthusiastically have worn me down.

Yeah, this game had such promise yet it turned to be such a dissapointment.
Not sure what to look forward for if you want a rich MMORPG experience. The genre has lost its core and is now a rehash of the same watered down experience over and over again.
Mmorg.com did a good thing when they nominated Eve the game of 2009. Hopefully that will make some large company to develop a massively multiplayer online game instead of singleplayer games disguised as one.

Well, if I'm not going to play a game, I typically don't haunt that games' forums here on MMORPG.com. It's almost as bad as politics and religion when it comes to games people like and don't like. Once people develop opinions, they tend to stick to their guns, write or wrong, good or bad. I try not to get too defensive about games I enjoy, but I do like to present opposing arguments when I see them as valid.
so...
When people have played these watered down games for so long, they don't know what else is out there. So they continue to buy these single player games calling it an MMO. Other companies see this and then it will never end.
I can't believe Cryptic is making people pay $240 just to play the Borg class. its great marketing as they will make a ton of money from the fans of Startrek, but on the other hand it makes them look like a bunch of money grabbing thugs. This is the main reason why I will not buy a Cryptic game in the future because they are only in it for the money, not the actual quality of the game. Wish more companies would put quality before quantity.

STO is just Cryptic's stepping stone to there next MMO they have in development. Just like CO was the cash for STO. Now STO will be the cash for there next game. In the end its all about padding that bottom line for Atari and they will keep pumping out garbage till people stop buying it.
If you look at CO and STO there is nothing about eather game that warrents a monthly fee. Both games aren't even on par with Guild Wars yet Cryptic figures they can milk it out. And it seems like it works since people buy up these lifetime subscriptions. How many people that picked up CO's lifetime subscriptions still regularly play the game. I know of atleast 10 people that did and haven't touched the game after the third month. They have completed virtually everything in the game and Cryptic hasn't done much of anything as far as adding real content to the game. Yeah they have these little events that popup every few months but then they only last for a month or two and they are gone. What a waste of development time and enegry.

Thats all well and good but...
I for one like to see the open and honest discussion on games that are new. Too many times have I spent my money and time on new MMO's only to be left with a useless box on my expansive MMORPG PC video game shelf; so now I like to do lots of reading on the games prior to purchase.
When doing this reading you cant use traditional reviews because the writers and reviewers are partisan to the companies (that is they will be if they ever want early access to the companies games for previews and early access to beta again).
Follow me here and dont get me wrong; I'm not condoning people rocking the boat for the sake of causing drama, however it is in these types of threads where the really messy guts of the truth come rolling out. Sometimes it comes from the pro end of the discussion and sometimes it comes from the con end of the discussion. But regardless of why it is said if you weed through enough of these nasty dirty blindly praising (or otherwise) threads you can begin to distill and then compile a good view of what the game is actually like; without wasting your time effort and money.

Amen....this whole thing just smacks of desperation and utter greed. I'm all for business making money, I mean it's what they need to do to operate. However, these "schemes" that Cryptic has come up with are completely ridiculous. You can tell that Bill Roper has had influence with all of these weird subscription schemes, considering his recent history.
What an amazing IP Cryptic was given to work with....and it's equally amazing how they could have really screwed this whole thing up so badly.
Conversely, there are people who are sick of needing a full group up to do anything in games. Anyone who's played MMOs long enough has seen guilds built and destroyed many times over. In MMOs, people come, people go...continually. Once in awhile, it's nice to just play a game where you see and meet others, but don't REQUIRE them.
I understand how you feel Doubter... what people dont realize is that people who are against the buisness practise of Atari/Cryptic is not hating on STO as a game. We just think that this kind behavior from companies is destructive for the industry and makes us worried about future releases.
I do not want MMOs to be about making cheap games based on well known IPs and then trying to grab as much money as possible from the fans. Just bvause you love a game/IP doesnt mean you have to like everything the company behind it does.
We have already been over this 4 months ago when CO launched and look how that turned out.

Well said. I wouldn't touch Darkfall if you PAID ME to play it. But I don't spend time trashing the game in their forums. Find a game that you enjoy and enjoy it. Not everybody has the same tastes as you do and you aren't going to convince people who already do like the game to stop playing it. Trashing a game repeatadly in that game's forums only accomplishes closed threads and hate between posters.

Cryptic isn't making anybody pay $240 to play a Borg. I won't be playing one, but based on my few days so far in open beta, I will be buying the game and subscribing probably at least for a couple months. I find the game fun and different.
Also, so far in my first few days, I've had more interaction with other people in STO than the first few days in any other MMOPRG, thanks to automatic grouping for missions and PVP battlegrounds that start early. True, there's no area with 50 people standing around watching someone dance on a mailbox, but that to me is really not that important.

While a game is near the end of development and during a beta is a good time to raise concerns and question the game as well as if you've just bought it or something. It seems like you are saying every game that comes out should have something like 99% positive posts in the forums and people who don't like it or see problems should make one or two posts and then leave. That's a pretty terrible idea for anyone checking out the forums for what people think of the game.

Ummm yes they are. If you want to play Borg you have to pay $240. Yeah they arent MAKING you play Borg but if you want to...
...and here I thought that if I wanted to play borg, all I have to do was allow myself to be captured
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)

I'll second this.
Because of the odd hours I play and the amount of time I have to play, grouping is not always an option. Either give me a way to complete a mission by thinking vice brute force or don't make it a requirement.
End game raid content is a totally different situation, but that's not what's being talked about, just the normal day to day missions.

Link please? Something official from Cryptic and not some third party site if you don't mind.
Edit: Ahh.... I see where you got that from... Of course the $240 is just for the Borg and the lifetime sub is just thrown in for free? LOL
As for the OP... It's been pretty clear for a long time you were not planning to take this game seriously so you leaving after a very short time playing is no surprise to me. All I have to say is good luck and I hope you do find a game you enjoy.

Oh, you weren't asking people to stop posting negative things about the game more than a tiny bit like you've asked several times before? I reread what you wrote and I still get that as what you were advocating. You don't ask people to stop repeatedly praising the game, for instance.

I said that people should stop trashing the game. That is all I have EVER said. There is a difference between constructive criticism and mindless trashing of the game. My apologies if that concept somehow escapes you, but I really thought everyone knew the difference between the two.My mistake.

I do not get that from Ktanner's post.
Posting negative feedback is fine and is good to debate, but "Trashing" a game repeatable with such as "game sux" etc is basically trolling and looking to cause trouble with other posters, then threads to get locked and the forum looks more like a warzone than a gaming forum.

Then play single or multiplayer games. Why pollute a genre if you dont like what it has to offer?
MMORPGS clearly was set out to create a massive, persistent world where people could meet each other, fight and then log of knowing that the world would go on. It was in a sense a virtual world.
But now with companies like Cryptic it has become something completely different with massive instancing and complete lack of a community. And the only reason they are doing that is because it is more profitable to release a single player game, say it is an MMORPG, and then not only charge a monthly fee but also have an RMT.
Cryptic are the worst of the worst when it comes to squeezing maximum dollar out of people and at the same time not care anything about basic MMORPG concepts or honoring an IP for that matter. Thankfully most people have realised this, as shown by the massive decline of subs for CO, but them buying a massive IP as Star Trek will definetely fool alot of people to buy STO only to quit 1-2 months later because their games has zero depth.
Unfourtanetely by the time people have realised this Cryptic are on their way to the bank to deposit their new revenue and to buy another IP which they can butcher and represent as another "MMO".
My advice for anyone know likes the Star Trek IP and MMORPGs to stay away from Cryptic games. Their "MMORPGs" are not MMORPGs and they are one of the few that are using a revenue model where not only you pay a monthly fee but also has an RMT.

Excuse me, but who died and made you king overseer of MMORPGS? Adolf Hitler would have been especially proud of your "pollute a genre" remark. Get off your high horse already. Your opinion is no more important than anyone else's.
It seems to be you on the high horse, sir.

Yeah whatever. I'm not the one telling people to go play another game because they are polluting the genre. If my retort to that kind of arrogance angers people then too bad.

"2) Negativity is perfectly fine and welcome on our forums. However, negativity without an opinion to back it up , such as, "This game sux!" is not acceptable, and is considered trolling. Colloquialisms such as "DorkFail" for Darkfall also fall into this category. If you do not like a game, explain why. Posting that you do not like a game in most every thread about said game is also considered trolling, and is unnecessary."
