Newmeanie this post was not directed at you and for the record I have read all of your posts... every post in this thread actually, this was directed at Kyleran.
On the demographic, I think BioWare will hit it directly where they were looking to. What this really boils down to is the game quality. A big part of your complaint NewMeanie was that there were so many other titles to play... but any game that has any manner of success would be worth playing, wouldn't you say? It seems like you've purposely stayed away from Star Wars games. As far as science fiction goes, they come up with some of the most exciting games ranging from RTS to RPG to flight simulators. So what I'm asking is, star wars aside, if this game was made with the quality and mastery that all bioware games seem to have, would you play it?
Sorry thought that was directed at me, my bad!
Well, to respond to your question, would I play this game if they took out the light sabres and made it a normal, original, science fiction game with the content that they've released to the public?
No.
I don't think this game has much going for it other than the fact that it's star wars.
its published direction (campaigns) and limited interactivity (in comparison to other online games) is a turn off for me.

If by campaign you mean their online interactive quest system, then yeah I can understand the trepidation since we haven't seen anything like it to date. If by limited interactivity you mean and open world as any other MMO on the market, then I can understand that as well. What I'm trying to ask, is if the game is doing well, and 6 months down the line its still amazingly popular, would you consider trying it as a star wars game? I mean when WoW launched, I didn't like it at all, it became popular and eventually, I tried it... granted I never subbed past my first month, but I gave it a shot.
If not I can understand that, and not everyone will like ToR... as not everyone likes WoW (me for one). Not every game is made to suit everyone... but I think there are more people who would be willing to play a well created game nomatter the IP then those that would hold out on a good game because the IP might be "outdated" to them.

Just so everyone gets the facts strait please read all of what I Copied and am Pasting directly from the SWTOR
website, everything listed has been officaly confirmed by bioware
the game acts just like any other MMO that has dungen instancing.
Now to set this strait the game is open just like WOW or LOTRO this single player crap is bull
bioware is offering a two fold game. There is the Character class story arc, which is non-lineir
then there is the open world inviroment just like wow has, lots of quests and grouping if you so choose
there is no single player mode, just dungen instancing which you can form groups, teams what ever
for. the rest of the game is like WOW or LOTRO its alot of planets with a open world format you will
run into alot of other players running around doing there own thing or in groups
Here is the post from the SWTOR website
The information here has been gathered from all the reviews listed below. If you take all the information we can start to gather how the game may turn out.

If you made it this far and actually read everything, the game is fleshing out just fine and is pretty much just like any other MMO
MMO??? where?? An MMO would do fine for more then a year..but swtor is not an MMO, its a single player game with multiplayer connection to co-op if people want...
I love how many people say this.
That is so beyond not the truth it's not even funny. Ignorance is not valid just because A LOT of people are.
They're making leveling/questing fun, exciting, involving and immerssive.
People whine and complain about hot horrible grinding is, then someone comes along and attempts to give you a reason to WANT to do it other than to get level capped and you BITCH and MOAN like two year olds.
The game will have all the elements of any other mmo; pvp and raiding for sure, and probably various other group activities.
I mean, they really haven't said crap about it other than that.
You're all just dumb. Stfu or educate yourselves on the small amount of information out there on it. FFS!
Playing: *sigh* back to WoW -------- Waiting for: SW:TOR, APB, WoD --------- Played and loved: Eve and WoW -------- Played and hated: WoW:WotLK, Warhammer, every single F2P
One person stated that all the popular mmos are based on popular backgrounds, like Star Trek, LOTRO and FF. FF is a little different its more of a maleable franchise than a lore backing, but regardless, the name is there.
I feel this is an appropriate argument but slighty moot WRT to Star Wars. I mean... its freaking STAR WARS. Like i said in my opening. If they make a MUPPETS MMO, will everyone play it? YEA!!! For a month, then give it up!
Will ALOT of people try this game and say WOW!! THIS SO SO SO SO COOL! and RACE to the forums to saay how GREAT it is? YES!! Ab-so-lutely. What im saying, is people will leave after a month, just like all modern MMOs, And populations will decline rapidly because the.. novelty of the starwars universe will go away fast and nothign will be left. Especially since the game is highly based on single player campaigns in this universe which I on one hand think is a very boring and childish universe.
Not if it's anything worth playing. If it's just nice words and a disappointing game, like others we have played, then yes you are right. But doesn't have much to do with the franchise. Only maybe the numbers will be more extreme, because more people will feel attracted, but those new players won't be demanding an amazing traditional MMORPG, so they won't leave massively either.

This is SO very true. Anytime a game tries to be different you get people that bitch and moan even though those same people bitch and moan constantly about how stagnant MMOs have become and how they are all the same. Some people just don't know what they really want .
There is nothing new to see here, Bioware are just adding theire usual things from theire Singleplayer games to an MMO. Same things in an Different surrounding, will it work? Lets wait and see i guess.
If i was an obvious troll, then wouldnt i deserve a High troll ranking? having a LOW troll ranking would imply im BAD at trolling and it was hard to notice it.
I don't think im trolling, SO i thus agree with your statement.

We want something new that has nothing to do with quest text.
The majority of us simply don't WANT to be 'immersed' in the game to such an extent as to Don a british accent and pretend i really am a freaking Paladin.
We just want to fight things, fight people, better ourselves at the game, and surpass all others.
We want something new along THESE lines, not FANCIER quests, or 'get me 5 apple PIES!" instead of simply apples.

There really won't be any "quest text" as far as I know, pretty sure it's going to be completely voiced over. This enhances immersion, probably why I get immersed easier in single-player games more so than these "mmo's" that are out today. The Old Republic seems to be just what the doctor is ordering in my book, an interactive, immersive adventure set in the Star Wars universe. And as far as pies go, there will be no quests involving them, only galactic-sized forrays with blasters, lightsabers, aliens and well-designed planets.
MMO???
FFS!
This is SO very true. Anytime a game tries to be different you get people that bitch and moan even though those same people bitch and moan constantly about how stagnant MMOs have become and how they are all the same. Some people just don't know what they really want .
No paladins in the Star Wars universe, unless you're calling force users paladins, in which case... not too smart.

So we should play it because its NOT innovative and its EXACTLY like every other game except with voice overs and light sabers?
So we should play it because its NOT innovative and its EXACTLY like every other game except with voice overs and light sabers?
There comes a point when one simplifies a defintion so much that the phrase used basically loses its ability to encapsulate the definition. Like using the word "plane" to describe a Harrier Jet. Let's face it, all MMO's are built on the same foundation if you simplify and generalise enough. But those core concepts don't accurately describe each MMO thoroughly enough. Therefore, one cannot say that SWTOR is going to be exactly like every other game just because it happens to use some tried and tested concepts. After all, it makes more sense to use some of those concepts than to just conceive concepts without doing some market research. Sometimes innovation for the sake of innovation isn't the best choice.
From the website extract posted by Darkrhodes (thanks for that btw), it seems that Bioware are taking the classic concepts used in other MMO's and adding a little more flexibility in order to try to remove the "holy triage" issue that is often found in other games (in my opinion, the holy triage isn't an issue, but let's not get off topic). To me, from a financial point of view, this was probably the best move. Sure, its not radical or innovative to the point of appearing alien to its competitors, and this might indeed upset some people. And it may seem attractive to be "innovative" and such like to the point whereby a game bears little resemblance to anything else. But lets face some harsh facts, these games need money to survive. And they only get one shot at this. Unless there is a good foundation of research to suggest that there is enough custom that can be generated from being so radical, then such a venture is often deemed very risky and often leads to failure in many industries. And just because a website has some percentage that want radical innovation, that alone doesn't justify spending millions and gambling with peoples livelihoods and careers.
So, coming back to your question, the fact that it isn't exactly like every other game except with voice overs and light sabers, then perhaps one must ask ones self: should we play it because its not radically innovative? In my opinion, I'd say that SWTOR has probably the best chance to succeed out of the range of MMO's due out, and therefore definately worth my own personal time to look into it further when it releases.

I agree adamantly with most of what you posted.
It is a financial venture. Fundamentally it is not about what the players 'want' but what will make them money honey, if not in the long run, then the short run (in order to fund long term projects). I agree totally, this I believe they will attain at least at expectation if not beyond.
Obviously none of us can say what the revenue stream forecasts are for this project. In my opinion, they are short term in nature and the company is planning, perhaps, a larger and less niche project to fund with the proceeds from this game.

Dude, it's freaking Star Wars. It's using lightsabers and blasters because that is the IP. Most fights in Star Wars were fast paced, random encounters which is exactly what you are getting in this game. Too make the combat different would be to break the IP and then the game would truly fail. When I play a Star Wars game, I expect it to feel like Star Wars.
Amazing that SWTOR is the highest hyped game, that just blows me away, pathetic lol. Call me a flamer troll, but its ridiculous.
There are so many better titles, "BETTER" because of the more creativity that went into the overall world itself, that are coming out.
FFXIV is one,
I mean, is Diablo III even on this site, if this game is, D3 should be.
If memory serves this website also reviewed and had several articles related to Dragon Age: Origins and that game isn't an online game at all. Ironically they're both made by Bioware and so I'm guessing there may be some $$ in it down the line for ol' mmorpg.com.

Think the problem is alot of the people in mmos not forget they are mmorpgs. There should be some storyline quests. Whole game doesn't have to be a story but should be a purpose for the quest. Kind of miss the days when people played to enjoy the world and help each other and not flex there epeens.
ok so i've read whats been said and now "i don't get it".
Newmeanie, from what i've read of your posts and one in particular where you say you just want combat and to be the best i have just one thing to add to this thread, GO OUT AND PLAY PvP GAMES THEN, i mean come on m8, you want to play MMO's but you don't want quest or story driven xp gain, sounds to me like PvP mmo's are your thing so why start a thread bashing on games that are not pure pvp? there's no point to it m8.
I do not see a MMO based on STAR WARS being excessively popular for more than a month. Its a fun idea, but its not a lasting impression, i mean... Its freaking star wars.
Thats like making a Muppets MMO.
I just checked and see you are 22.
Which means that you weren't alive when the first Star Wars hit.
I realize that in today's day and age when one can go to the internet and be exposed to all sort of content, that Star Wars probably isn't THE coolest thing around.
But when Star wars first hit there wasn't anything remotely like it. Nothing. and because of that it inspired the imaginations of many a boy, girls and adult at the time.
Star Wars has far greater cache than you think.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I do not see a MMO based on STAR WARS being excessively popular for more than a month. Its a fun idea, but its not a lasting impression, i mean... Its freaking star wars.

Someone should make a Muppet Star Wars MMO! That would be pretty epic...

The Dark Crystal MMO
Dude, I friggin' loved The Dark Crystal. I still have the original VHS as well as the DVD.
You know what would make for a really great mmo? The Neverending Story. The world of Fantasia with a "neverending story", which is what mmos are really supposed to be in the first place.

Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

All of the Baldurs gate Series, Did they do Icewind dale? played those too...
and Dragon age... anddd neverwinter nights.. prolly some other randoms.
Baldurs gate 4 lifeee
EDIT: no, they didnt do icewind dale apparantly... at least according to wikipedias page on them, but still awesome games! woo! icewind dale 4 liffeee!
A muppets MMO would be awesome!
If you made it this far and actually read everything, the game is fleshing out just fine and is pretty much just like any other MMO
except it has Bioware style story telling.
I love how many people say this.
That is so beyond not the truth it's not even funny. Ignorance is not valid just because A LOT of people are.
They're making leveling/questing fun, exciting, involving and immerssive.

Playing: *sigh* back to WoW
--------
Waiting for: SW:TOR, APB, WoD
---------
Played and loved: Eve and WoW
--------
Played and hated: WoW:WotLK, Warhammer, every single F2P
Not if it's anything worth playing. If it's just nice words and a disappointing game, like others we have played, then yes you are right. But doesn't have much to do with the franchise. Only maybe the numbers will be more extreme, because more people will feel attracted, but those new players won't be demanding an amazing traditional MMORPG, so they won't leave massively either.
I love how many people say this.

What an obvious troll 1/10
There is nothing new to see here, Bioware are just adding theire usual things from theire Singleplayer games to an MMO. Same things in an Different surrounding, will it work? Lets wait and see i guess.
I dont understand this ranking system.
If i was an obvious troll, then wouldnt i deserve a High troll ranking? having a LOW troll ranking would imply im BAD at trolling and it was hard to notice it.
I don't think im trolling, SO i thus agree with your statement.

There really won't be any "quest text" as far as I know, pretty sure it's going to be completely voiced over. This enhances immersion, probably why I get immersed easier in single-player games more so than these "mmo's" that are out today. No paladins in the Star Wars universe, unless you're calling force users paladins, in which case... not too smart.
We will fight creatures, droids, npc's and other players. Standard MMO features. Just because of the information, my assumptions and that the game is taking place in the Star Wars universe makes it "surpass" everything else in my case.
