Always ruins an MMO tbh...
Stupid looking Santa hats in Planetside, I remember my friends not playing that game back in 2003 until they were taken out. Stupid Bat Wings in SWG or Ewoks with Hearts or the annoying life day in SWG which all just look stupid. EQ2 you have these stupid presents, snowmen and Christmas trees about the place which just make the game world looks so stupid.
I just wish they left them outta the frigging games. I mean in them Universes theres no Jesus or Valentines day or any of that crap so LEAVE IT OUT!

As much as it may not fit into the universe, it's almost a necessity for games to have something like this. Aion was chastised for not having holiday events up until now. You may think it ruins immersion, but know that there are a great deal of people who play this game for fun, and seeing little things like that and being able to play with it really allow people to have a whole lot of fun, if not just for a break in the game.
So yes, it may be stupid at times, but there are a lot of people who like it.
MMOs played: Horizons, Auto Assault, Ryzom, EVE, WAR, WoW, EQ2, LotRO, GW, DAoC, Aion, Requiem, Atlantica, DDO, Allods, Earth Eternal, Fallen Earth, Rift
Willing to try anything new
Lots of people eat paste too, doesn't make it right. Just sayin'
Ha. Chill out man. Most mmo's are gay by themselves so they might as well look that way. And not all of us have traumatic childhood holiday memories: http://www.bangitout.com/uploads/62santahates.gif
I dislike them as well. If they're going to make in-game events and holidays, they should be unique to the game and on their own dates in a manner that actually fits into the game's lore in a meaningful way.
It depends on what they do. I prefer to have them as it gives a little dynamics to what is usually a static world. I'd almost prefer their be seasons, but I understand the reasons behind not having them.
I like what LotRO does, in that it's generally attributed more to a season than a holiday.
CoX pushes the envelope significantly, but the content is usually fun, and hey, it's assumed to still be Earth.
SWG's life day was fine. Can't comment on the rest.
Probably the silliest was Eve, with it's "snowball" launcher thingie.
I dont mind halloween shit, but christmas stuff kills it for me....thank god LOTRO and FE dont have christmas trees and presents lying around everywhere...in fact they are no where to be found
I play all ghame
I guess I'm the only one who likes to dress up as Santa and gank people.
Personally I love it when they bring Holidays into the game. I don't mind if they bring other religious Holidays in either. Bring them all on. I enjoy playing through them. :P
I like the holiday stuff as well. Not because it fits into the lore or even fits into the "reality" of the game. To me it's the chocolate syrup on ice cream. It's good without it, but better with it.

I saw the thread title and thought, "only in Planetside with those stupid santa hats." Most amusing that it was the first thing the OP mentioned in the post!
"What is truly revealing is his implication that believing something to be true is the same as it being true. [continue]" -John Oliver
I do.
Unless of course the holiday is integrated into the world and it's lore.
So, for instance, no santa hats or candy canes. But allow for a "holiday" at the time of a real world holiday but make it interesting and make it so it adds some interesting game play.
So for Halloween, no pumpkins or "buff" candy but perhaps have an event where a spirit wearing Antlers who rides a chariot pulled by wolves wanders and land and brings chaos to different areas which can become public quests.
The last day make him and his minions a powerful raid boss and allow all players to take part in taking him down.
Can be fleshed out to your liking.

In Swg way before they had a X-mass patch, we already made X-mass trees and presents, so it was only logical seeing how many actualy enjoyed it that it would come in a nicer form made by devs that players could deal with. Which is kinda the only MMORPG where I used or engaged in festival activities.
Thing is like with most games it's a OPTION!!!!!, as nobody forces you to engage in the holiday festivals, you can still do all the other things you usely do, I don't know nor understand how people can develop hate on things that are just options, but that's just me.
FE has currently a holiday festival, many engage in it, I don't, perhaps I might be missing out on something, perhaps I aint missing anything, I just go on my own path/way. As I see these things as OPTIONS, would be nice if more people would understand they are just options as we can not hate where we have a choice in, obvious you could hate if it's forced upon you with no choice to ignore it. Thankfully we can ignore it if we want to. Try it..............
Try not to hate OPTIONS or CHOICES.
Nah, there's lots of us who do. I think the proper term for us is "ex-UOers"
Anyone remember the Santa Slay server?
- RPG Quiz - can you get all 25 right?
- FPS Quiz - how well do you know your shooters?
I'm not sure its about options or choices and is more about adding bits that are somewhat incongrous to the world you are playing in.
Having Christmas Trees all around and garland hanging on your evil city or Santa Hats and Reindeer everwhere when you are saving the world does take one out of the world you are playing in.
That's why I think it's ok to have holidays but make it so the holiday makes sense in the world you are playing in. And then if people want to take part then that's their choice.
But cresting a newly discovred area only to see a giant Menorah in the Distance doesn't really do it for some.

I love holidays in games.

I use the word "hate" carefully and I hate holiday crap from real life appearing in MMOs.
Cryptic is trying a Customer Development approach to MMO creation.

Ya, you don't have to participate but if I remember correctly from my wow days, when they'd have special holiday quests and stuff, the whole game ground to a halt as everyone was doing those quests. If they go too far it does kinda knock the flow of the game off track for a few days.
I really enjoyed the Frostfell dungeons in EQ2 last year. This year the season has found me playing LOTRO and just today I did a few quests and got a nice robe. Havnt seen any Santa stuff but a kin member did get some coal from a package he purchased with tokens.

Which MMO puts garland in the evil cities?
I lineage 2 players would set up christmas trees all around Aden.
I also remember a lot of holday stuff in EQ II in the evil city's side, though to be fair most of it in my memory seems to be halloween stuff. I do remember snow ball fights though.
oh, here we go...
Festive decorations can be found throughout Norrath.
Snowball fights.

yes eq2 has snowball fights. The good guys also have quests to get a Christmas tree for your home.
I remember back in the day the first winter Asheron's Call was live them blanketing the land with snow and Snowmen. I thought the snow was cool but always thought the Snowmen were out of place in Dereth. I have mixed feelings as well about the different "holiday" fare that Blizzard throws into WoW.

I added pics above.
Here's another... Queynos, evil city... Christmas Tree. AND PRESENTS!
It's great that people like them. my preference is somethign that integrates more into the world.
edit: speaking of snowballs, here is a link to Bill Cosby's "Revenge".
This thread, and talking of snowballs, reminded me of it.

I like the holiday events, it mixes things up a bit.
Lots of people eat paste too, doesn't make it right. Just sayin'
In this analogy the MMO creators are the paste company .
It may not be right but people aren't go into this business to right the wrongs of the world they do it to make money.
