EQ2 is Incredible

ElreicElreic Member Posts: 79

I posted a question the other day why people do not like EQ2-- this one is for why you like it.

Most MMO's I find that I run out of interesting quests, or even any quests period, not so in EQ2. As I progress I am floored by the sheer number of quests in all of the various lands. I find myself going, rats, I wish I could have done this quest or that quest while I was at the appropriate level. I think you could level in one land or a dozen lands if you so chose.

Also EQ2 has something for every play style. The journey to level 80 is not a rush if you choose to play on a PvP server and enjoy the journey, as it seems all the newer players are doing on my server Nafalgen. As you progress you can choose to shunt up to 50% of your XP into character development points, call Alternative Advancement Points. With these points you can take your character in seemingly endless alternate directions of specialization. Multiple categories and multiple trees within each category. As you level your AA points can further dive into any of the trees. You can also stop XP gain to ensure you hit as many quests as possible and kill all the named mobs at your level range.

Open world PvP after level 10. Life is dangerous in Norath. Get into a guild and get ready.

Crafting, you can craft spells and nearly everything else a character needs.

Raiding, there is a ton of it if you so choose, really the PvE is pretty damn solid. Quests are interesting, for the most part. They integrate many elements of the game world into the quests. Like rescue the Griffon and he will fly you back. Little touches like that show some thought and time went into the quests.

So many classes and races, not your vanilla pick one of 3-4. You can also go through a series of quests where you are not aligned with either faction and literally switch factions, bored? Try it!

The critics may hve been right early on in this games life, but with the current dirge of games that lack content and polish, this one is a head above and really deserves a look if you have never done so.

My .02...What do you like?

I agree that Everquest 2 is one of the best game out there. Its the best western mmo for sure.  I played for a couple of months and what I liked about it was that you had choices of going where you wanted to go and doing what you wanted to do. The game was not on rails forcing you to go down a certain path. Thats the main thing I look for in a MMO.  Also the AA system lest you build your character the way you wanted. The game was beutiful at times and ugly at other times but  I quit because of the horrible graphic engine performace and the combat was too slow and got boring.

I was an avid WOW player and about 4 months ago called it quits.   Of course I got the itch to  play another mmo and decided to try eq2 on the request/begging of a friend.   I have to say, eq2 has definitely gotten my mmo juice flowing again.   I started with a wizard (played a mage in wow) but for whatever reason (probably my lack of knowledge) i was out leveling the quests in the starting area too fast.   So I picked another class, and haven't looked back.

The number of quests, the variety of creatures to conquer, and the depth is amazing.   What's even better is my PC is almost 10 years old now, and it still runs the game great.   I did have to upgrade my video card (which was no easy task as I had the old style pci ports) but the game flows nicely and have become my new favorite.  The other thing I'm struck with is how many things wow took from eq2.

Agreed. I just reactivated my EQ2 account this past weekend after a long break, and had forgotten how much fun it is. If you are bored of all the mmos out there and are looking for something new to play, give EQ2 a shot.

EQ2 even has a pvp server (which I play on) if you are looking for some good pvp. There are actually consequences for pvping in EQ2, which most other mmos don't have. It's definenetly not for the feint of heart. lol

    Currently Playing: DAOC Uthgard

Previously Played: UO, DAOC, Shadowbane, AC2, SWG, Horizons, COX, WOW, EQ2, LOTRO, AOC, WAR, Vanguard, Rift, SWTOR, ESO, GW2.

Interesting you say that.  When it first came out, there were complaints that the game was too "in the box" or too "linear".  But compared to the MMO's coming out these days, EQ2 feels like a wide open and free world.

You thought the combat was slow?  Actually, fights go pretty quickly compared to many MMO's; maybe not as fast as WOW, of course.

I would go back and the only thing making me hesitate is the forum postings saying the game has gotten way too easy, is very soloable all the way to 80, and that much sting has been taken out of the death penalty. I need "challenge" in my gaming, "challenge" and "freedom".

Try the pvp server then. That's far from easy leveling.

Does Moorgard still have an active role in the game?

I've also decided to give this game a go.

I'm completely astonished at this game depht, i mean, after trying almost every game out there this one seems the only true RPG on the market.

I may build my character the way I want it, go where I want, have tens of different stats to check, loads of factions, have a good/bad system that changes the way villages and races act towards us, I even had to decide my religion.

Not even gonna mention the crafting system and the player housing wich are simply brutal.... so many things to do and so many possibilities.

This is a great game, and definately a great (maybe the only online) true RPG, and this is the reason why it has not the success it deserves. Todays players search for simplicity and instant gratification, not to spend months evolving a character and building their mark on the world.

    Sup guys

I would like to say that EQ2 is better than WoW (very close), but it has very minor flaws that bug me :)

I was on the Nagafen server(pvp) and it was loads of fun, but the AA grind can be extremely boring. I quit twice because of it. The parts where EQ2 is better than WoW is the AA system (even though I disliked it, still better than the WoW talent system). Its a pretty indepth game, but there are some cosmetic flaws that bug the hell out of me. When attacking with a melee character I'll swing then later numbers will randomly appear. It ruins immersion for me which is a big deal. WoWs combat is spot on in this category.

The harvesting system in Eq2 isn't too bad. I like the rare materials and such.

I like how important crafting is in Eq2!! The MC gear is so important for a new player, this added a lot for me.

Two very fun games if you like that style.

PVE challenge, is what I mean.  I reserve PVP antics for sabotaging my team in Left4Dead 2.  I"m the guy who shoots the gas can or sets off the zombie alarm too early, just so I can see folks scramble and shoot from the hip to salvage the situation, hehe.

But in MMO's, I prefer hardcore PVE challenges and very little or nothing in the way of PVP.  The reason, is PVP tends to take my attention away from the wondrous world environment and tends to trivialize any PVE efforts.

I know i'll probably get flamed for saying this, but when I quit WoW I tried eq2. I just found eq2 a really ghetto game compared to WoW, i'm sure it has good mechanics but I thought the gameplay and how the combat runs just wasn't even close to as smooth as WoW.

For these reasons I could never get into eq2 in my eyes it just couldn't compare to WoW.

The core game is good enough. Me personally, I am finally SoE free first time since march of 1999.

LOL---maybe, but the depth is so far exceeding other MMO's. People are always complaning here about the dearth of quality games. If you are basing your opinion of EQ2 from the players who played it in it's first years or because WoW crushed it in terms of subs, then you are way wrong. I agree that performance ought to be better at high settings, but this game is exceedingly advanced, and in depth, over the games out today, for the most part.

So, if people are tired of what is out now- this ought to get a look. Level a char to 20, take the time to craft, workj on AA's, do some PvP and see what you think.

Also the game is not going anywhere, they continue to invest and grow it with content etc.

I am installing the game again now. Still have 2 weeks left on my subscription.

Moorgard (Steve Danuser) left SoE & is currently working for 38 Studios on their "Project Copernicus".

I loved EverQuest, EQII in it's first year was shit, but after that year & up to & including the Kunark expansion it was brilliant, they turned the game around, although performance is still ropey in places, I was especially fond of it's crafting, which I usually loathe in other games, EQ included.

The thing is I have just gotten fed up of SoE & their money-grubbing, if they stopped screwing the pooch, advertised better & didn't keep trying so hard to screw up their own games (which would be awesome) they'd be competing with other MMO's much better, the money men are holding them back because they have lost touch with gaming and are only thinking about business, trouble is their greed is self-destructive & their deceptions, and sometimes outright bullshitting of their custmers drives them away.

SoE should be top dog, but they aren't because they have an evil destructive nemesis working against them, plotting to undermine all the hard work of their talented & hard working game developers......SoE's business managers.

Played eq2 a while ago when pvp servers came out.  I enjoyed the different healers and support  rogue abilities.   Hated the zones for pvp and zone hopping.   did not play long because of the zones but I found the classes more creative then wow and the dungeons where good.

I loved Eq2 in it's infancy, but it still had a lot of room for improvement.I wish instead of adding all these Xpacs with tons of new zones they would improve what they already had.I found the mentor system was a great addition,i didn't have that xp>ap idea when i played ,it sounds good, but is still a time=reward idea,so not brilliant.

I would rather see games instead of lose xp or levels lose skill points,so there is some risk/challenge/reward,that way, merely hanging out all day 24/7 does not give you all these bonus points.I am not even sure there was PVP servers when i played ,i only ever remember PVE and frankly that is all i care about.

I loved EQ2 when it was smaller,it was still plenty big ,yet all the players were noticeable, and the zones seemed real busy. You could literally walk anywhere and you would find players to ask help out on killing a named or whatever.

No matter Eq2's flaws,it is still a much better game than WOW ever will be,too bad it got so big that new players will feel completely alone playing the game.

When i played back in the day, crafting was great, much better than this cheap auto craft i see games doing, too bad that was dumb down and crafting bots ran rampant back in the day also, otherwise i loved crafting.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I have to say I agree with some of the posters regarding SoE.

I played EQ2 when it first came out, and am glad to hear things have turned around.  However since SoE is involved, I would never consider going back.

I feel the same way. The game is wonderful but like all games after a few years, its pretty top heavy. It has more races and classes than any game ive played and the lore is second to none.  But as you say, the world is so huge it can seem lonely but there are plenty of players. Antonia Bayle server has some very nice people.

  • MikailaMikaila Member UncommonPosts: 45

I agree, it's an amazing game. Probably the best mmo I've ever played.

But, unfortunately, it always feels so empty. I rarely came across anyone. That little fact made me quit. I would still be playing if it didn't feel like I was playing a single player game.

  • wertaxwertax Member UncommonPosts: 68

If you think your server has a low population at the moment you are playing,

then during your prime-time playing ours do the following :

/who all [min lvl] [max lvl]

    example : /who all 10 20

This will show you how many people(not playing anonymous) are online in that lvl range.

In this way you can hop from 1 server to another looking for a good lvl range to start out.

Also a good way to find company is to go looking for a guild, press -u- ,

if you see theres only 2-3 people online in the guild during your playing times,

leave the guild and look for another one..

I myself dont have the issue of not seeing people online, even when lvling lower toons,

but that might be just be luck on my side.

    Greetings,

    Ortahr.

Must be entirely the server you select, I mentioned in the other thread that the PvP server I am on, Nafalgen is pretty robust, at least from lvl 1-20, where I am now. People also are not rushing to lvl 80, on a PvP server that is not a good idea.

The game has mad support, they just released a patch to fix over 600 bugs, most of them little nit things in quests etc, but that shows an ongoing committement to the player base.
