New Dust 514 Info. Hands on preview from "Edge"'.

EDGE has a hands on preview of Dust 514.

"CCP, the game’s Icelandic developer, has provided a steady stream of expansions over the years, but now, from a satellite studio in Shanghai, the masters of Eve’s universe are taking their biggest risk yet: building another – very different – game inside the landscape of the first, a game that will be as twitchy as Eve is thoughtful, as direct as Eve is mediated. I'm kind of worried that Dust wont be good. We've seen a whole mess of Fps games release the last couple years that suck so much.

What happens if Dust stinks? what happens to planetary conquest (the eve simcity mechanic that lets us take over regions of planets using dust players)?

They say Dust will have and effect on Sov? Well Sov is kind of messed up right now and is going through changes.

I don;t know if linking these two games is the right move right now.

Eve needs Sov worked on, we need planetary conquest and incarna in game beofre Dust even comes out (since they link to dust). These features need to be out long enough that Eve players actually use the features like any other sandbox mechanic.

It seems like too much imo.

I have faith in CCP but I'm worried that they may be taking on a bit too much.

What if Dust isn't popular at all on consoles? will they port to PC to try to save it since Eve players will probably pick it up?

I don't know about all this.

I don't like features in Eve being linked to a game that has a very good chance of failing. CCP is an unproven console developer.

    PLaying: EvE, Ryzom

    Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

Put Call of Duty: Dust 514 on it and problem fixed. It will be bought by milions of people, no matter how the game actually plays.

I first heard about his game the other day. It sounds like an interesting concept, an FPS that is linked to an MMO. Apparently the actions of the Dust 514 players will affect the EVE universe. I'll have to keep an eye on this game, it looks pretty interesting.

I see this game as being like Battlefeild 2142, but connected to EVE, should be a cool idea. And EVE and this game will both be able to servive well if the other fails. Ima probaly get this game, ya know, cus i have an xbox. EVE is fun cant wait to be siting there with my laptop open playing eve and be playing dust at the same time! lol

FPSes on consoles are too painful to me.

It's like asking professional athletes to run a marathon in MC Hammer pants and Wooden Shoes.  Sure it might be a unique challenge, but most serious athletes just aren't interested in that sort of nonsense.

Trying to aim in console first-person shooters is a lot like waving around a ten-foot pole with a sack of bricks tied to the far end.

Will this game be Free To Play on console and why on earth are they not making a PC Version where the console and pc players can play together?. If this game is a pay to play console only game then it has already failed.

  • DoktorTeufelDoktorTeufel Member UncommonPosts: 413

I'm almost 100% certain it will be pay-to-play. It's going to be a persistent world (connected to EVE) requiring dedicated servers, regular maintenance, and support staff. Then again, Guild Wars has servers and support staff and is F2P, so you never know.

I doubt it will be P2P beyond the Xbox Live subscription since Microsoft requires everything to be hosted on their infrastructure...

That is of course if it is on the Xbox. If its PS3-only, who knows?

    Those are all good questions.

But it seems to me that this is the crux of what people think is wrong with the mmo industry: devs don't take chances.

Now we have a dev taking a chance and you can feel the reverberance of "what if it is a failure". Now imagine that you are an investor or a developer who is employing x amount of employees.  Perhaps it is a bit more understandable as to why Developers don't take chances.

I applaud ccp for taking the chance and doing something different. They have been successful thus far and I think this will be a good offering. If not then they will go back to the drawing board and make the appropriate changes. The one nice thing about eve is that is is very apparent that it is here to stay.

If you watched the fan fest which i dont think you did Dust 514 can exist without EvE and vice versa you dont need people playing dust for planetary conflict to happen.

I am doubting it will actually see a mainstream console release. There's too much competition from other FPS and MMO shooter for console either out now or out soon. CCP are just a niche PC game developer they will never make it to mainstream success.

those mainstream fps games will be used as basic training. the elite will be recruited for sure.

Most comments from people Ive asked about have been, "that's sounds awesome" and the idea of it was something  they've never even heard of in gaming.  Console fps players anyway. Followed by questions after questions.

    They like the concept.

Interesting points. However they are only speculation till you provide links to support them.

CCP have said it will be free to play. They're doing some kind of item shop thing for the revenue stream.

Thank you for the prompt reply An item shop on its own wont scare me away. And in the end I can see why its there.
