WoW Clones? Meh! They are EQ Clones in disguise!

SwoogieSwoogie Member UncommonPosts: 399

If WoW was build from EQ and new MMO's are build from WoW, then all these WoW Clones are really EQ clones. Right? I have thought this for a while.. Let me know if I am right or wrong

Yes and no, while it is true they have the same core mechanics making them clones of EQ like WoW was. But they were made to be clones of WoW as WoW is the big money maker.

In it's most basic form, all these games are just  AD&D clones

Yes they are all AD&D clones in very basic form.

EQ Clones = focused on complexity class mechanics, group play, challenge and community

WoW Clones = focused on easy obtainable items, solo play, linear class mechanics

But wait...AD&D is a clone from H.G. Wells' masterpiece "Little Orc Wars" from 100 years ago!

    OMG!

    So not a nerd!

GET OFF THESE FORUMS YOU NORMIE!!!

    /jk :P

AD&D = Advanced Dungeons and Dragons - Pen and Paper role playing game started back in the day.

Its actually quite fun when you have a group of people, some pizza and beer on a crappy weather saturday night.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

AD&D is just roleplaying, which is essentially pretending to be someone else...which is just acting...

So instead of calling games WoW Clones, you should call them Ancient Greek Theater Clones.

This is why those clones fail.  They focus on 'defining'  features of the game that do not actually define the game.  The success of EQ was not defined by those features and similarly the success of WoW is based on much deeper mechanics then what the 'popular' opinion is.

  • You're 100% right but nobody cares.  Wow's the market leader, known to about 12.5 million more people than EQ, and is the standard for all comparison.  End of story.

WOW can be considered a clone of post-PoP EQ, but not of pre-PoP EQ, which is the true EQ, refered to as classic EQ, meaning the first trilogy, that is EQ+kunark+velious and some might add luclin but I rather not.
