I am a hardcore player as in puting in over 40+ hours a week, always joining one of the top rank guilds and aliances, and striving to be the best at PVP and end game, what % of the game will I be missing out on or how will it effect over all play for me if I am not the bigiest fan or versed in lore.

    Okay, simple solution here.

Head over to the official forums for STO. Look around for threads about "PvP population imbalance" or "Lack of Klingon content" or any similar threads. I saw quite a few of them just taking a casual look at the official forums yesterday. It seems that a pretty large number of the "fans" of this game are worried about there being too many Starfleet players and not enough Klingon players. One post quoted something like 80% of players polled were planning to play Starfleet (no, I don't know how they got that number). Thus, some players are worried that PvP will not be balanced in this game since the Starfleet players will win by sheer zerg numbers alone.

But here is my take on this: Trekkies will be drawn to the Starfleet side becasue of their fantasy to be a Starfleet captain. Meanwhile, normal MMO players who are just looking for a good game to play will probably try both sides and see which they like better from a gameplay perspective. Now a guy like YOU who really likes PvP is probably going to end up playing Klingon simply because they are more aggressive and their gameplay mechanics lend themselves to PvP more easily than Starfleet. I think this will be the case for a lot of the people interested in PvP. Thus, the "imbalance" may actually end up being quite the reverse of what the current fan base is afraid of. Starfleet may have the majority in terms of numbers but I'll bet a lot of the best and most aggressive PvPers will be on the Klingon side.

So, if you consider yourself "hardcore" and you like PvP, then just play Klingon. You will avoid most of the Trekkies and probably find many more gamers like yourself than you would on the Starfleet side. After the game comes out start looking for a Klingon guild which doesn't RP and wants to do a lot of PvP. You will probably be right at home.

BUT... one major caveat here: Cryptic is not known for the high quality of PvP in their games. CoX didn't even get villians for years and CO doesn't have them at all yet, just an arena. Although STO is claiming to have Starfleet vs Klingon PvP at launch, I have serious doubts that Cryptic has any clue how to make it fun or entertaining for hardcore PvPers based on their past track record. So if PvP is what you are looking for, you might just start looking somewhere else. Just some advice, take it or leave it.

    Well said.

However I believe Cryptic being ST fans, will get PvP right...have some faith.

And to the OP- If you thought the last movie was the best movie of the summer, then you will probably love this game.  No worries

DO NOT take this as a trek bashing post IT IS NOT!
I just do not want to get involved with a game where 90% of the population is going to be talking about stuff that I will have no clue about or where not knowing this out side of the MMO stuff will put me at a in game disadvantage.

I really can't stand the irrelevant conversations that go on in other games general chat. So to me, hearing about Star Trek stuff in a Star Trek game would be preferrable. What would you rather people talk about? Irrellevant stuff that doesn't have anything to do with the game or the lore? If so, then I won't be sorry to have you /ragequit, because the amount of time you play and your priorities are in no way aligned with mine. I can't believe you even admitted to 40+ hours a week of gaming.

Trekkies are too far and few to keep a ST tv show on so I think it safe to say most of the players are not going to be spending much time spouting lore, now having said that though what do you think the odds are that if you buy the game at launch you will have to deal with those types of players.  If you get in to start that's when the most hardcore "trekkies" are bound to be there but that's the same with any game I think on launch the chat channels will be full of chatter not necessarily related to the actual game itself.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

I don't know how the OP feels in this instance, but personally I would rather not HEAR what people are talking about at all unless its relevant to what I'm currently doing in the game. If I am grouped with other players then I need to communicate with them to work as a team but other than that I pretty much don't want to interact with them at all unless they are members of my guild, personal friends of mine or they have some other legitmitate business with me.

And whats with this sudden obsession with Lore? That character has been dead for like ten years or something! Let it go already...

Yes the trekkies will be there en masse and they will own the chat channels. And they will whine from day one ot the very end about EVERYTHING. I guess /leave general will be a must

I never mentioned roleplay, so stick to the subject. Some people love and get into stories, so they care about lore. I cannot get into any game, whether it's single-player or multi-player, if I can't get into the setting and lore. So lore is important for the immersion for me. I don't get all geeked out over it, but I'm not going to complain either if people are talking about Star Trek in a Star Trek game. I'm also not going to get upset over people chatting in a multiplayer game.

I'm still unclear on what your problem is. You say that you cannot enjoy a game if you can't get into the story. What does that have to do with the OPs post or my opinion that I don't use public chat channels? Neither I nor the OP are trying to prevent you from enjoying the story of the game. I don't think either of us even mentioned story. We just don't want to listen to public chat channel spam or weirdo roleplayers ranting for us to remain in chracter. And since I accomplish that by simply minding my own business and staying away from such people, I can't seem to find where you have a problem with it.

When the game progresses nearer to release I'd start petitioning Atari for RP servers, at the moment they just seem to plan PvE and PvP, so at launch I would be prepared to encounter questions such as: "where is Ironforge" or "is there an equivalent to a Paladin in this game" . The game could be a treat, but I think it will have haters given that its more an interpretation of the Star Trek universe. It will be interesting to see how many subs STO gets compared to SWTOR, both games might have an overlapping target player base.

I think OP is worrying too much.  This MMO will be the same as Age of Conan in the sense that you dont have to know about the lore in order to play or have fun. Of course you will have some hardcore lore masters but the community overall is going to be full of kids that care less about lore and more about hack and slash. That was my experience with AoC. I met maybe 3 players that were fans of Conan but they didn't force it to anyone in the guild I was.

  • Darth_OsorDarth_Osor Member Posts: 1,089

Count me as another person that doesn't think hardcore Trek fans will play this game long, if at all.  I'd wager the people OP is concerned about won't care for this or most other MMOs because of the focus on combat over story and other non combat aspects.  You can't even hang out with friends/guildees on your ship because of no interiors.

Anyway I'd rather share a community with lore nerds and trekkies in general than the AoC community.  Never played WoW, so any dogging of that community would be on second hand stories.

I won't be playing this game and I'm also not certain how many Star Trek fans it will gather, but I do have to say....I find it rather amusing that a person would want to play a Star Trek MMO...and be worried that he might **GASP** run into Star Trek fans or people interested in the lore of the game.

Even funnier....people who admit to playing an online game 40+ hours a week.... but then consider people who role-play "wierdo's".

Sorry guys....... enjoy whatver play-style you like...but if your playing an MMORPG.... your just as much a "wierdo" as anyone who knows what THAC0 stands for....or **GASP** likes to RP.

Time to come out of the closet and admit your geek-hood like the rest of us.

No need to feel self-conscious.... being a geek is cool these days....or so my wife and kid keep telling me ;)

I think a lot of people are misunderstanding the OP's perspective. He didn't say he hates Trek and wants to avoid all talk of it; in fact, he said he watched the shows and the movies. I think what a lot of Trekkers don't get is that there's a category of people who have enjoyed the various Star Trek offerings, but simply don't take it as seriously as they do. And speaking as one of those people, in my experience the really hardcore Trek fans (the true Trekkers/ Trekkies) tend to be very dismissive of casual fans, in a way they wouldn't be dismissive of someone who isn't a fan at all.

Personaly, I got the Lore joke. I know what a Cardassian is. I can draw you a picture of a Ferengi. I know which quadrant the Borg originated in. But I haven't watched an episode of anything Star Trek related in a decade, and don't plan to any time soon. My concern logging into STO wouldn't be people roleplaing or talking about in-game stuff. It's people grousing about how the game deals with continuity, citing Star Trek chapter and verse, which is off-putting to people who aren't on exactly the same page.

I think there's a weird tension between hardcore and casual fans of any fictional universe. It's the difference between a very religious person meeting someone who's an atheist and someone who only goes to church on holidays. One is completely foreign, and possibly an opportunity for conversion; the other (from the very religous person's perspective) is just doing it wrong. The OP wanted to know if he could be a hardcore gamer but a casual fan. My guess is no, but not because of the playerbase. I just don't think Cryptic is likely to make a game that he's going to want to play forty hours a week. They don't make games for hardcore gamers.

As for "Trek talk"... I wouldn't worry too much about it. There will be some of course but I personally don't think it will be overly tiresome. Of course there will be those few special Trek fans that were expecting a Star Trek life simulator that will bitch up a storm right after launch but they will either soon except the fact that this is a game or they will quit... either is good as we won't have to listen to them anymore.

Actually, you might consider just how patient Trekkers are. Look at all the fail in the Trek shows and movies, and yet they're still Trekkin' lol. I think they're going to be VERY HAPPY that the MMO industry has finally managed to put out SOMETHING for Star Trek.

Considering that the game isn't even out yet, wondering if the population that currently doesn't exist will make you /ragequit seems a tad premature at this point.

My suggestion is to wait until it's on a free trial then give it a go.

I consider myself a pretty hardcore Trek fan and this isnt a Trek game by a long shot , lot of combat, no real sandbox element, read somewhere there might not even be crafting, no neutral faction, ground gameplay looks horrible, zoned consensual pvp? pfft, if you are all looking for a immersive Trek experience and a virtual world, I would look somewhere else. Better off taking donations off the Trek fans and create a real Trek MMO made for Trek fans not for mass appeal which is what they are going for here, considering a lot of people dont like Star Trek let alone they would play a game by the same name.
