Tired of WoW's people, need a friendly game

I'm sick of the people in WoW. All of the players are lvl 70 which means I can't get a group for an instance. It's hard to get gear because I'm always criticized by the gear I get. The new LFG system sucks, too.

I need a game with nice people that would be willing to help a newbie out if I asked for help.

The last game I encountered in which I actually made friends and enjoyed being in a group besides getting xp and loot was FFXI, but it was really hard to make any progress in the game.

I know the game is repetitive, but I don't mind repetitiveness as long as I'm with a friend.

So, does CoX have a good social network with helpful, friendly players?

If you dont mind crappy graphics, asheron's call is a good game.  It is a bit buggy and the game looks really old, but the gameplay makes up for all that.  I'd suggest just taking up the 14 day free trial to check into it.  Its not the best (Except combat is best evar!!1one1!!) but its pretty fun.

Coh has its good points communitywise. Ex-WoW players love it.  Most people are really nice, and helpful, very few jerks, I used to consider it a vacation spot from other mmo's before i9. Money meant nothing after a certain level, no gear to speak of, just powers and costumes, exciting combat and a playerbase that are playing based on a desire to express their inner need to fight the good fight, which would explain why coh had prolly the nicest community around. i9 did change the overall tone a bit by introducing the need for money and impoverishing countless lvl 50 players, myself included, forcing some to powerlvl for money ,which people used to do for free, and others to do missions ad infinitum to earn money, kinda making it a job, which is, technically, what most of us are playing to escape. Apart from that tho, the community is, as I said, really nice, and because of the sidekick feature you can always tag along on a bud's mission.

I loved the community in CoH and would rate it to be the nicest i have encountered in an mmo. It is a nice noob friendly mmo, and there always seemed to be low level characters even belonging to long term and experienced players. Creating new toons and experimenting with new power types and archetypes is fun and there is always people running around at lower levels. Finding a team shouldn't be much of a problem when starting out. I made some friends like this with higher level toons, and with the side kick feature, i could always hang out w/ them on thier mains or other higher lvl toons.

I would deffinately recommend this game if your chasing a friendly helpful community.

The Lord of the Rings Online community on Landroval has been the best MMO community I've ever been a part of.  You get the odd jerk, sure... but mostly people are all very friendly and approachable.  Plenty of them will help you just for asking.  I know, I'm one of them   You can give the game a 7 day free trial:

CoH has one of the best communities.  While you'll want to keep your enhancements up to scratch, it's not a loot-oriented or gear-oriented game.  Since I9 introduced some high-end enhancements, players don't throw money around like they used to, but they're still friendly and helpful.

Groups at all levels are constantly forming, and most groups do several missions in a row. Group composition isn't crucial, and the missions scale to the number and level of characters, so the groups tend to be fluid, picking up new members and replacing those who have left, without being picky about the archetypes. The sidekick system allows lower-level characters to group with higher-level characters, and still be effective in the mission.

In summary, you won't have trouble finding groups. And they won't criticize you for your gear, because you'll have no gear (and they can't see your enhancements). Get the free trial and see what you think. Once you do the tutorial and get the hang of the controls (not terribly different from WoW), see if there are any sewer groups forming in Atlas Park (lots of low-level baddies in the sewers of the starting zone).

CoX has an excellent community.  Sure you will find an occasional jackhole, but they are a rarity.  I know often in CoH supergroups hold costume contests for newbies, offering influence (money) prizes.  I have had people just give me high level enhancements for no reason, I can't equip them but they sell very well.  I know I've done the same thing, my 50 selling at a quartermaster and a lowbie comes up to sell too and I just give him/her a couple of the enhancements.  After all, 20k or so inf is chump change to me, but a fortune for someone not yet level 10.

Plus there are often player-run events on the servers.  Usually they are posted in the official forums or other fan sites.

Since the game isn't really gear-driven, you don't get loot-whores or ninja-looters.  I've been halfway through a mission and said "I have a <whatever enhancement> anyone need it?" and then just given it away.

The pvp is even a bit more "friendly" in that in the pvp zones everyone fights at the same combat level.  So none of the 51's getting wtfpwned by epic 60's in AV for example.

Anyone else think this is one of the side effects of this whole trend of simple easy to learn games that just about every freakin game company is seeming to follow. If theres no learning curve and no reason to help eachother then theres no reason to interact and get along with others. Not to turn this into precu swg thing but back then you needed eachother to advance and learn and accomplish things.Granted after the grind you could get by on your own but by then you made the friends and developed a community.

I concur with the above statement.

I don't think so.  City of Heroes is pretty easy to learn, and very easy to solo. The players don't need to be nice to each other; they just are.

I think a lot of it comes from the lack of dependence on gear. In a typical fantasy MMO, arguments regularly break out over rare loot drops and players perform boring and annoying tasks for improved gear. Your character is defined more by his gear than anything else, and you have to do things that are less than fun in order to get some of that gear. Players get bitchy, jealous, and petty in gear-dependent games.

City of Heroes has none of that. I don't have to worry about someone camping a rare mob, I don't have to worry about ninja looters, and I don't have to do long boring quests so I can have the gear I need to do the fun quests. I buy my enhancements, I use them on my powers, then I go beat up some villains.

I agree with the above comments and also think that the sidekick / exemplar system makes the game a friendlier place too. Although it is probably more efficient to team with people of your own level, the fact that a lvl 50 can team up with a lvl 1 means that there is no-one in-game who can't find a team if they are patient about it. I've asked lvl 50s to do content that is a long way below their security level; since they can get inf out of doing so, I've usually found that most players happy to oblige if the team is enjoyable to play with.

I agree! I have played a lot of MMO's and COH/V have the most friendly players by far. Or I wouldn't have been playing for 3+ years :)

I have met some of my best friends through COH as well as my current business partner. In short COH has changed my life for the better in more ways than one.

And I hope to meet more friends this way.

my global in COH/V is @Kinetic Furay

Don't be shy look me up sometime everyone. I play on several servers. Justice, freedom and protector mostly! But I can jump on another if anyone wants to hang out!

Agree.  CoH has very friendly people.  Also the customization is amazing.  I probably logged 10+ hours customizing a character.  I always ended up deleting him because i saw a costume that inspired me = P

I tried the trial of this game recently and I have to say, apart from the character creation it was all down hill. The community didnt seem to be able to talk in the English language, the chatroom slang is very present in this game, very of putting.

Another annoying thing is being invited to guilds atleast ten times with ten minutes of standing there as I emerged from the newbie zone, no hello's just a spam invite, thats not community, thats guilds wanting to be "uber"

If your looking for something that is different, something that is mature then I suggest you try Ultima Online, a game that kept me in its graps for six years, despite its downfalls(graphics) it still remains the deepest in content and of course the father of all the graphical mmorpgs we play today!

The community is good, one of the best.  The game isn't real deep though, and gets old fairly quick.

  • mo0rbidmo0rbid Member Posts: 363

The reason for wow players not to embrace newbies is because they dont have too - there simply are too much people so none have to be nice because the population in the game is so vast. unlike eq2 where players are few and very nice to eachother and to new players because they want a bigger community/playerbase

btw I cant seem to find an active CoX trial, is there one? I played the game before but id like to try it out again

I lost interest in WoW back in febuary, right after TBC was release, kept my account active and play sparringly, preferring Auto Assault.  In June MMORPG started the CoX trial account give away so I signed up, I was always interested in CoX but I like to try things before I buy.  I was not disappointed I wished I played this game since it started, I probably would of skipped that headache called WoW and the illfated AA.

I found a nice friendly, goofballish and pvp fantical villian group on Virtue (Shout out to DSI!) and never looked back.  Now 4 months later I'm leader rank in DSI. Play on hero side with one of the biggest number-analyst in the game (shout out Ian_of_moore) and have a perma-dom (Rawr Mind/psy).

In short the people are nice, I've been accepted every where I go, and the economy (now that there is one) is not nearly as cut throat as WoW.  I had to buy a ton of Invention sets to get perma-dom and most of the pieces where dirt cheap, only a few were really expensive.

I say give it a  try, the most you have to lose is 14 days of trial time.

City of Heroes is a fun, friendly game. From the time you log into at level 1 till level 50, you will receive invites to teams your range. You can get into some good super groups that really help out each other. If you want to run solo, you can do that too. There are events, parties, and general chatter at every turn. You'll have a great time and will be warmly welcome !
