Recomended for a .hack fan...true?

I was recommended to check this on LFG boards because I was looking for an MMO similar to "The World" from the .hack series. If anyone is familiar with that can you confirm/deny this?
I'm basically looking for a good ACTIVE community, fantasy setting ( I know it has this), character customizability, dungeons ( it BETTER have this XD) and fun!
Also, is it too late to even look into the game? I currently know nothing about it, or the D&D Universe, would that be a problem?

Being a .hack fan myself, I have no idea... All i know is there is no AIDA or any kind of Doll Syndrome associated with playing DDO.
