I appreciate you taking the time to read this, as I'm sure you've all seen a lot of "New to game" kinda stuff. I will keep it short.
1.) In many prior MMO kind of games, I'm ever fearful of gimping my character. I've seen and read a few of the websites suggested in the forum... but which one (or few) would be best to stick with early on for a person who has no clue what he's getting into? (Basically a website to help dumb things down for me to newbie level just for the time being, I've only played E&B as a Jenquai Explorer back in the day, and I know it's like comparing apples to A-Bombs.)
2.) I'm d'loading the trial now... and I've read (do not know if it's viable, or a scam/hoax) that you can play the game for "Free" after your free trial? I've heard reference to a thing called "PLEX". Is this it, and if so, where on the web, or in the forum, could I have a better handle of what it is and how this is supposed to work?
Again I thank you for your time, and if you could spare a few answers for this potential miner!

1) The character creation used to much more difficult and confusing, but it has been changed so there isn't a "best" way to create your character anymore. Anything is fine, just pick what you like the look of. The only way you can really gimp your character is by wasting your neural remaps and putting a lot of points into charisma. You have to go out of your way to do that, so don't worry about it. If you train a skill and then realize you will never use it, it won't gimp you in training other skills that you will use.
2) It's true and not a hoax and fully promoted by CCP. You can exchange ingame currency for play time. You can buy a game time code with RL currency, and then plug in the code in-game to create an in-game item called plex. You can then sell the plex for game currency. Likewise, you can buy these plex from other players and activate it to extent your subscription time.
One last comment :
If you've liked the crafting/economy of other games, then you will really enjoy Eve, as it has the most sophisticated and robust economy of any MMO. However, from my perspective miners are the lowest of the low in the Eve economy. You can make a lot more money doing production, invention, market manipulation, and trading. For me at least, those have some level of satisfaction, while mining is just about being afk and checking the screen every few minutes.Get EveMon. It's a program that will help you guide and manage your character.
Get EFT. It will help you guide and manage your ships.
For anyone that has not taken one of their courses, I highly recommend EVE University. They will train you up and send you out much more prepared than most of us when we first started.
Yeah you cant really gimp a character at the start. However, it is important to have a plan as to which skills you choose to train. Here are the core skills all pilots need.
Really useful skills to fly a ship properly
Skills useful for all ships.
Very high priority - should be trained to a minimum of level IV.
1. Electronics (fit more stuff)
2. Engineering (fit more stuff)
3. Energy Management (more capacitor)
4. Energy Systems Operation (cap regenerates quicker)
5. Shield Management (more shields - harder to kill*)
6. Shield Operations (regenerate shield quicker*)
7. Repair Systems (repair armour more efficiently*)
8. Mechanic (more structure - harder to kill)
9. Hull Upgrades (fit better armor - harder to kill)
10. Navigation (fly faster)
11. Evasive Maneuvering (turn quicker)
12. Warp Drive Ops (warp farther)
13. Spaceship Command (turn quicker)
Other than this i would suggest training you learning skills to level 4 before your 100% training time bonus runs out at 1.6 mill skill points. Learning skills increase attributes and attributes determine how fast a skill will train. You can further increase attributes with implants. After this it's all about specializing your skills so you don't waste training time on skills you really don't need. It's the only way to really gimp a character and why some people choose to have more than one account.
Plex is great it's just like buying currency online. Buy the plex for cash and sell it for isk. You can also use them to add game time to your account. You won't be able to buy them with ingame isk any time soon as they cost hundreds of million isk.
Awesome. I really appreciate everyones very informative and helpful replies. Thank you!

Good guide 10/10
Don’t waste your time training shields if you choose Gallente or Amar, their focus is armour tanking and you will find those skills as sub sets of mechanic. Also do not fall into the trap of rushing to get the next class of ship, many newbs rush to battleship, do not have the skills to fit it correctly and cry like babies, when their first one dies quickly leaving them no money to get another. Also, never fly ships you cannot afford to lose, a little hard starting out but something you should always bear in mind, Eve can be harsh for some players as its unlike others due to the heavy death penalty.
Oh almost forgot, will save someone having to say it ingame, "FINISH THE DAMN TUTORIAL"
My Colour Is Vomit green, I puke on the tards with stupid colour sigs. My symbol is ,,!, O ,!,, My enemies are any prat with a colour sig, a meaningless personality test, or a pointless list of games and classes.
Regards Hexcaliber
Dont forget that 20% extra Shield hp ++ is good even for a galente,
And, I agree with you, In fact stick with cruiser until you got the skill recommended here.
and nobody will be impressed with you flying a BS with 1m training And fact they will etc.....
I didn't notice anyone say this, so I'll do so.
With regards to the PLEX system. While it IS possible to play the game for free using this system by paying in game ISK for one, they cost an awful lot of it. Haven't checked the market in some time but last I looked it was in the region of 300m ISK for a month's game time. It may take you a while to reach a state where you're generating that sort of income in a month while being able to afford the other bits and bobs you need to play the game. Don't expect to be able to play for free immediately unless you're very good at trading (irl) and have the inclination to do so in game.
Bookmarked this page because of this. Thanks mate, really good guide! 4 days into EVE and im having a ball. Had a pretty terrible first day though :P
