WARNING: This thread mentions other mmo games I've played and in no way do I wish to insult or anger any of such player base.

I am not a EVE user atm. I have never played EVE but i have some questions.

I think it would be wise for me to explain who I am, where I came from and what I am looking for. I recently quit FFXI, I was a NA 75 DRK/37THF/37NIN/37WAR/25BRD. I mention ffxi because for me to find a new home I will ask the community questions about certain things I simply do not want to deal with.

Q1. in ffxi i use to have to spend weeks sometimes months to farm enough money for my gear. In the end this is something that burnt me out. Its important that I get into a new mmo that I can earn my keep but IM not looking for a farming time sink.  (for example i had to spend a month farming to earn my body armor in ffxi...)

Q2. Community in game looks very mature. I'm very interested in EVE because of its higher age player base (I am 26 b/w). How is the single world concept working out for you guys?

Q3. Can I solo in EVE? can I login earn some money kill some ships and logoff? can i really progress on my own. I dont want to depend on people... I want to progress when i want to.(have fun w/o giving my life away) In ffxi i use to have to camp HNMS (big named mobs) and this would take 6-10 hours (most of the time loose pull to botters/cheaters and still have to record ToD etc). EVE is a player driven story which i like but do you have to camp stuff?

Q4. is there such a thing as a broken class/job in EVE? in ffxi i was a broken melee... this maybe a MMO flaw but i have to ask this question.

Q5. is there cheating? I am a pureist and when i see people taking short cuts it makes me feel like im wasteing my time (people who know will understand).

Q6. in Earth and Beyond I could go watch an anime while I build levels and such. I liked that, are certain mindless tasks automated? I've read about minning but I am rather ignorant on the topic and just curious, what is a mining drone? (now I sound like a tard)

Q7. final question, i cant find it anywhere on the boards lol. is there a Cock Pit view? i played Earth and Beyond for a little (pc couldnt run it so i kinda was forced to leave.) and i really liked the cock pit view (also in old WC games)..

Thats about it. I am very into the sci-fi theme and last thing i wana do is jump into another tolken/fantasy based game. I do not have the pc ready but once i do i will be coming to a new mmo and EVE is at the top of my short list. I want to thank everyone for reading this and have a great day ^^

A1 : In EVE skills train online AND offline , they take time to train but you don't need to be online and waste your life trying to get them up. Money however is a little bit of a timesink , it often involves mining wich can take a few hours , but its not a big thing. You just get money when you need it. Its easy enough to come by.

A2: The single world concept works very well , at its lowest there are 2000 people online , 12000 at peak times, this means there is always someone arround. Community is very helpful , handy as the game is not too easy in the beginning. Guilds/corporations in this game actually WANT you , the new player , some even offer signing bonuses. When you are in one of the larger alliances often teamspeak is used and there is a real sense of being part of something bigger.

A3 : Skills train offline , you can hunt monsters solo and you can mine solo but its all slower. For PvP you best team up. The game is soloable but you will end up with a group automatically as you join a corporation pretty quickly and meet up. You don't need to look for a group for hours you can solo and just meet up with others whenever happens automatically.

A4 : Broken classes do not exist , there are poweful ship setups but they are not invincible. Even a big battleship can be taken out my a swarm of smaller frigates. There is an endless amount of ways that you can outfit your ship. I find the balance to be great. You can also buy ALL skills and so can everyone else and train them. So technically the only way to mess up your char is to pick the wrong skills but then again you can always train others. Classes do not exist. You want to fight , train gunnery , want to mine train mining , etc... (this is a little bit simplified).

A5: Technically speaking there is no cheating , there are however clever ways to do certain things and outsmart others , but these techniques are generally well known and everyone can use them. They are all also possible within the contraints of the game and therefore not cheating , more like tactics really.
The only thing is that some pirates are really cheap and you may end up jumping trough a gate and being ganked by pirates because they are camping the gate. But this is all part of the game , pirates , law enforcement etc... . Don't worry this doesn't happen everywhere , plenty of safe systems.

A6 : You can do other stuff , mining involves dragging ore now and then from one window to the other (once you figure out the system). Skills train offline so you can do anything you like then. Be carefule while mining however as you can be jumped by pirates and whatnot.(again in non-safe systems , with rarer ore). Drones help a little bit.

A7: No cockpit view , all 3th person.

I hope this awnsers your question , one last advice the trial is really too short to get to know the game well , it only gets fun after you figure it all out but there are plenty of people arround.

Thanks for the great feedback. about mining, do you have to sit there every moment and monitor it?

here is what i had to do in other mmo games to earn income. Goto a spread out zone and run around looking for a certain mob to kill for days on end... when you mine is it some what an automated task? Ive read around and i know you dont have to mine. Also can u train skills while u earn cash? im kinda confused =p

One more question, i dont understand what a corp is? in other mmo games you have a Guild/Clan that you joined and mostly did "high end" stuff. for the most no one likes each other and we just put up with one another in order to obtain the .... "uber" (/vomit) why would a clan / corp want me? im just a lowbe :/ (once again im so jaded beyond belief from FF Frustration).

as far as giving a game a chance... i always have. you have to play a game for at least 2 months in order to know the game right for you and even then might take a year.... (one of the reasons why most mmo games give that first month free) I played E&B for 6 months, played eqoa for a year and now leaving ffxi burnt out and jaded after a year and 1/2. I really need something fresh and EVE looks good. BTW i read that EVE had 30k users but you said peek time is 12k? either way the idea of being in a game world with more then 4k users on at one time sounds amazing.

things i cant stand is being idle... this is something i learned from FFXIDLE. i need to be busy doing stuff no matter what the server population is.

    caution  - long answers ahead

you mine asteroids in asteroid belts (or ice in ice belts). these belts are inhabited by npc pirates.  the lower level security a system is the harder the npc pirate (called a "rat") is.  at the same time the rats get harder the better the stuff that can be gained from the belts.  so mining, except in the highest security areas, requires you to either kill the rats or use shields and armour to withstand them for long periods of time. you fit mining lasers on your ship (different qualities of lasers and ships and skills) you lock a roid .. you turn on lasers . you wait .. your cargo fills up, you will be able to mine more that your cargo can handle so you will need to jetison some, to free up more space. this drops a can that now floats nearby and you can then fill it up.  you need a hauler (and industrial ship) to bring it back to a station to be refined / sold.  mining is best done in teams - multiple miners and 1 hauler. many people use two accounts one mine and one hauler. or you can solo .. mine and then return to station - change ships and go back and haul.  npcs are persky.  in low sec space in the fringes they are down right deadly.  if you want to step away from comp you can - if you in a 1.0 system (highest security) no worries .. in 0.0 you will need to have the ability to tank the spawn (4-6 months of skills maybe .. im conservative though) or you need friends .. or fly away to a safe spot in space.

Skills are learnt in real time.  Some take less than an hour, the highest levels can take as much as a month. lv 1 is all you need to use stuff .. (like mining lv 1 to use a mining laser takes 1hr tops). lv 2-3-4-5 each will bring added bonus mined amount / mining laser cycle.

My corp is my focus in game, its function is that of the people that make up the corp (what it does - how it does it) - but there are in game features of the corp.  corps can rent offices in staitons and then have hangers with which the corp can share goods. corp channel - corp mail - corp wallet - corp offices - corp space structures - ships insured by the corp - corp wars  etc.. some corps share little - others share everything - as many types as there are people.  Corps are in turn sometimes part of a larger entity called alliances. these alliances rule the outer, low security spaces.  My corp are an amazing group, and its great always having friends online whenever you log on.  Instead of thinking about logging on when you want restricting you ability to play with a corp, think of it more that the corp will be there whenver you log on and you can chose to do something with them, or not.

A new char can help in alot of ways.  They can help NPC hunting by ripping around in a fast ship and collecting the loot droped from the dead pirate ships.  Youll get a cut of the loot and likely youll be ganged with you corp m8s and getting a cut of the pirate bounty.  You can train to fly a hauler .. alwys need haulers, you can mine in the ship you have .. some corps are goofs about it .. a good corp will treat you like an equal is your doing your best to help out.  buying and selling can be done by anyone.  As for combat, anyone can scout for a fleet on thier first day and be of great use.

sorry about going on a bunch - but you seemed to want details image

Mining requires monitoring yes , basically you get into range of an astroid and engage mining lasers , your cargo starts to fill up once its full you can transfer the ore into a cargo container floating in space , usually someone flies a hauler then and comes and pick the ore up to ferry it away , but you can do that too.

That "someone" is usually a corporation mate , corporations ARE guilds , a group of players , now the bigger corporations usually have all sorts of people going for combat specialists to researchers and builders , since everything is player built in this game they act like corp too sometime , selling stuff . In my corporation I could mine ore and then sell that to the corp for good price , the builder would then turn that into ship that are then sold on the market. You can also directly sell your ore of course. But EVERYONE ends up in a corp/guild anyway, so don't worry. A clan/corp CAn you use , with minmal skills you can become a gear in what keeps the place running , help with mining. With some basic combat skills you can even help in large scale pvp by being a tackler , a fast frigate that scrambles larger ship so they can't fly off and the battleships then bombard them.

If you join a corporation that is part of an alliance or that is at war with another corp you will feel more at home since , its YOU VS them and there is a damn good reason to work together. I was in arguably one of the strongest alliances in the game the Curse Alliance , we controlled several regions and would have regular patrols of the area just playing guarddog , or have large fleet battles VS other alliances , these involves people commanding you "Fleet commanders" over teamspeak (using a mic , its essential to good pvp) , and 30+ ships on each side. But like I said above it won't take you forever to be able to particiapte , depends on what corporation , if you join an all mining/building/researching corp you can get rich , get accces to unqiue blueprints etc... its the "crafter" path , you can to a degree combine both , techinally its possible but it takes a long time. Besides you get better and you will become more and more of an asset. If the people suck in your corp join another one , always corps arround. Usually they also have people in there that will show you the ropes. Or help organise stuff for lower chars so they can mine safely , without being harassed by NPC or PC pirates.

Skill training happens always it goes like this :

example skill "Gunnery" , you want to train this to level 2 , you select it from the list and it show how long it will take , for example "14 Hours", then you click train and the progress bar begins to fill up , it will now take 14 hours to complete (REAL hours) and it will train regardless if you are offline or online , or whatever you are doing. Training times go from 10mins to 30 days(for the high level ones , for the best stuff).

You won't be idle in safe space but in more dangerous space it could be your system is being raided by peeps of another alliance or pirates and if you undock they can get you and are sometimes forced to stay docked. But low securtiry space (without NPC police) is something for later in the game and then its usually in an alliance and they can send in the cavalary.

HEHEHe , I quit the game 3 months ago wanted to take a break from it for a bit , EQ2 came out , but I've canceled that now. Talking about the game makes me think about going back , its should be fresh again now. :)

    Anymore questions , please ask.

The problem with mining is that your spaceship can only hold a certain amount of ore/minerals. Then the ore has to be transported to a space station, or moved into a can and transported later.

If solo you'll have to destroy incoming npc pirates once or twice every hour. But all in all it's not very hectic, you can still surf the web and read and stuff. If you mine in pvp areas, you'll have to monitor more closely, but will earn cash faster.

A corp is pretty much the same as a guild/clan. Miners/part-time miners are often needed (cuz it's boring).

"... Or help organise stuff for lower chars so they can mine safely , without being harassed by NPC or PC pirates."

Wow, corps sound like lol Mafia. This sounds really different and fun ^^

I guess in my make believe world i would think of myself as a rogue type (han solo). I played a TT in E&B and this sounds very cool.

  • ZipehZipeh Member Posts: 265

we usualy have an experienced player fly in and tank the spawn .. then everyone else can come in and mine .. as long as that tank stays in the belt .. no new spawns will happen ..  new spawns mean everyone has to scatter and wait for sec to sort out the rats.

I can fully understand the lack of interest in yet another tolken/fantasy type game...

"Q1. in ffxi i use to have to spend weeks sometimes months to farm enough money for my gear. In the end this is something that burnt me out. Its important that I get into a new mmo that I can earn my keep but IM not looking for a farming time sink. (for example i had to spend a month farming to earn my body armor in ffxi...)"

In EVE money or as it is known in EVE "ISK" is available and attainable in many forms even to a new player, as in most games and RL your ability to increase wealth will ease as you gain more wealth/items and experience.

There are many ways to make ISK ingame for a new player be it:

Mining (has to be mentioned 1st as its the road most go down).
Agent/mission running (I would reccomend as an avenue to a new player to get a feel for the game and have some fun making ISK).
Trading (takes some research and time as well as knowledge of the markets).
And PVE (Can be repetative and to begin with has the least time invested to ISK reward, although this changes totally as you progress to higher Mobs).

Q2. Community in game looks very mature. I'm very interested in EVE because of its higher age player base (I am 26 b/w). How is the single world concept working out for you guys?

33 here (dont laugh you ba***rds :P) and I have to say EVE has a great community, probably the best I have ever seen, the forum Mods keep a very tight grip as do the GMs and Devs and respond to abuse and immature rants and griefing very quickly.

From personal experience players age from 15 to 45 most fall between 18 - 30 I believe, the community will also respond (sometimes with force lol) to those who try to harrass others.

The single world has played out wonderfully imo, having eveyrone playing together in the same Universe/game-world adds so much more to the game (I probably will never play a sharded game again) and I have played games with sharding where the lag has been so much worse.

Sure solo is possible (I am atm, some players since launch) the real game is in a Corp = Clan/Guild though, but you can make ISK and progress on your own, there are limitations though... territory you cannot go into without risks, possibly less ISK making oppertuinties (rare stuffs) and much less fun as you will not be seeing the real "game" with Corp and alliance wars and joint Ops and Corp structures and new mates and so on.......

Q4. is there such a thing as a broken class/job in EVE? in ffxi i was a broken melee... this maybe a MMO flaw but i have to ask this question.

Hmm not really a broken class, a bug here or there maybe and some skills that are only available in char creation atm (worth looking into as well) some gang (group/fleet) functions need a little love.

Q5. is there cheating? I am a pureist and when i see people taking short cuts it makes me feel like im wasteing my time (people who know will understand).

Very little really, some folk use macros to mine basic ores in high security space and the GMs try to catch/ban them (players also) there are theifs who will try to steal from careless miners and some loot theives (never seen one in 2+ yrs here) and scammers, but if you are careful you can avoid most of these types.

Q6. in Earth and Beyond I could go watch an anime while I build levels and such. I liked that, are certain mindless tasks automated? I've read about minning but I am rather ignorant on the topic and just curious, what is a mining drone? (now I sound like a tard)

Offline skill system in EVE (joy!) you set the skill you want to train (say its 8 hrs) and its done if you are playing ingame or go to work and come back.

Mining can require very little attention depending on how you do it and if you have help (someone hauling it and you just eject it) and mining drones scoop a small % of ore and return it to your ships hold.

Q7. final question, i cant find it anywhere on the boards lol. is there a Cock Pit view? i played Earth and Beyond for a little (pc couldnt run it so i kinda was forced to leave.) and i really liked the cock pit view (also in old WC games)..

Yeah I liked it in E&B but there is no cockpit view in EVE and it isn't there i think as it wouldnt be very interesting really, its hard to explain but you would be missing so much more eyecandy with it.

Wait until you see the size of a big ship or station from a little ship or from a larger ship see a little one ::::20::

There are no camped mission terminals.
The playerbase is from all over the world and keep different times so server numbers fluctuate (always growing).

Corps/Guilds/Clans always want new members, good corps will set you up and get you going in the right direction, some even offer training and most will require a certain level of skills (usually very reasonable and attainable) so you have at least a basic understanding of the game and to avoid spys (from other Corps) and alts sent there to cause problems and timewasters/trial account types and some corps just want mining slaves to make them ISK.

Hope any of this helps, some very good info from other posters here, and best of luck to you in EVE.

Read the official forums and ask questions as the community is very helpful.

Q1: You do not have to farm to get your new ships or modules. As long as you got isk the modules are not a problem, nor are the ships, but to get isk you need to mine, do agent missions or just do a player events.

Q2: It is, i have rearly seen a unmature player. The times i have he stoped playing within a month.

Q3: You can do the most things alone, tho i would recommend that you get a friend into the game and you 2 play togheter, its more effective for ISK and stuff.

Q4: No, you decide what you want to train. You can train the same things as everyone else in the game.

Q5: No cheating, maybe some exploiting now and then, but those people often gets banned or suspended for a time.

Q6: Here the training is totaly automated, You start training and you can log off or earn cash during that time. And a mining drone is a small craft that you can launch from your Dronebay on the ship that mines resources for you.

Q7: No cockpit view, i miss it as well from EnB :)

one last question and you guys have been great ^^

Can i run eve well on a system with

    RADEON 9250 128M DDR 8X DVI /TV

    512Mb PC2700 - 333MHz DDR Memory

    AMD Athlon XP 2400+ (1.93GHz/266Mhz)

i'm going to buy a box from xl-pc.

    Indeed you can :)

  • AlkatrazAlkatraz Member Posts: 119

I think this game may be what u were looking for, but i will warn u about one thing : PVP.

PVP is what makes this game and keeps your interest over the months.....belive me, i have 3 accounts and have played this game for more then 18 months, i have tryed allmost every profession in EVE and all i can say is that without PVP this game wouldn't have kept me all those months.

When i first started EVE i was looking for the exact same thing what u are looking for now : soloing, having fun by my own, a game that will not make me late on my job...

Trust me on this one : there is no fun in EVE without team play and i think that all the new MMO's are based on the exact same principle of joining groups. Find a good group and EVE will be like a second life to u.

U can solo just fine in EVE by hunting npc's, doing missions, complexes (dungeons), mining, etc.....but that won't keep u in game more then 6 months as there is not enough content for doing only those things....U see... EVE 's content is made by players wich organise themselves into corporations with a common goal and start fighting with other rival corporations in epic battles , so if u are not in the middle of the ones that are doing it, u will get bored to death .

Anyway, have fun in EVE and i hope in 6 months to see u posting in here and confirming ( may well be the other way arround, but i doubt it) what i've just told u.

Sure you can, I did have issues with ATI drivers from time to time when I had an ATI, but if you have any issues check the "Known issues and workarounds" on the EVE-Online forums.

Q3. Can I solo in EVE? can I login earn some money kill some ships and logoff? can i really progress on my own. I dont want to depend on people... Just one thing to emphasize something in the other responses so far.

Yes you can solo, but in EVE the trick to having fun over time is to find a good corp and get involved with the corp's activities, including PvP. The issue isn't camping in terms of camping mobs and competing with other players for mobs. EVE is huge, there is plenty of space for everyone, if one asteroid belt has been stripped its easy enough to find another in that system or in a closeby one. The issue is that playing solo after a while you will get bored with what there is to do. The real game in EVE is the game created by the Corps and their alliances and rivalries with each other. Most of this takes place in low security space (where there are better resources, for example) which is technically open to anyone but in reality is accessed through certain choke point star systems ... and the stargates in these systems are often camped by a group of ships from the corp alliance that claims that space, so if you are soloing it can be hard to access this space (not impossible, people do it with fast ships well kitted out, but its hard), whereas if you belong to a good corp you probably will have access to a slice of low security space as a result of that, and this opens up more of the game.

So you'll find that you can play the game for a while solo, but to really enjoy it over time you're going to want to join a corp.
