I was bored and I just bought this game yesterday and have been playing in what feels like a Beta since last night. I can't help but think of the Grinch everytime I look at an Orc! People are actually pretty helpful in DF. I jumped into a small clan right away having played EvE. As far as the game goes... I feel like I am in 0.0 in EvE at all times... I got ganked 5 times by Reds my first 2 hours online and mob-killed 10 times in 4 hours... the mob AI is really interesting though, they WILL kite you back to their buddies and kill you if ur dumb enough to follow them in where they will respawn on top of you... the game has potential, but it is bug filled... I will continue to play the "Beta" for a while longer tho... just don't know if I can make it to infamous 1 Month mark... my only goal right now is to get 500g for Blacksmithing so I can load up my bank with gear to have more when I get ganked so that maybe I can explore the world a little and work up my melee skills... it is so intense at times that one of my Clanmates got ganked at the bank after farming for quite a while and lost it all (no apparently the guards don't do shit if you are war-decced)... can't help but keet logging on tho...
Past games: SWG, WoW, TR, AoC, WAR, EvE, Aion (Beta)

died 10 times to mobs? Might want to work on it, they are harder than most MMORPGs.
Could you give some examples of why you would feel the game is a beta?
Hope you will have more fun with it during your free month
Thanks for the post I guess
The UI feels incomplete... one bar up at a time... I rebound my hotbars so I could flip through them quickly and I hotbarred most of my items and weapons and sometimes they equip and sometimes they don't... the mobs seem jerky even though the rest of the environment is smooth and flowing and nothing I do to the graphics settings changes that... character animations seem stiff and incomplete... lighting seems a little off... home bind works sometimes and others it doesn't... that's just off the top of my head. I expected this going in though...
I do find it interesting that when I go to help someone, I accidently hit them when they run in front of me, get flagged as a Rogue and they turn around and start whacking on me lol cuz they think I am trying to gank them
The only beginning thing that is dissapointing is that you get one melee skill... left click, left click, left click...
The most frustrating part of the game is that there is NO safehaven if you are Wardecced... I constantly run to the bank to store stuff away, and yes it does add an element of suspense because you can die putting it away and have it stolen, but it would be nice to have a little safehaven... maybe that comes with a large clan? Dunno, but like I said I can't help but keep going back... at least when the server is up
Edit: ... and the server has been down more than it has been up since I started playing
Edit: ... and it's still down
Yea the new patch messed up the servers as I heard, usually its up 24/7. Probably hotfixes
UI is much better now than it used to be, but they started changing it now with the latest patch (automatic sheathing) to make it easier to use.
The safe haven thing, yes the war declaration means you can get messed up in cities (that r supposed to be safe havens) but I think its the right mechanic for FFA pvp. Negociate a treaty with other clan and you are safe.
Or for complete safety go around the countryside, find a chaos chest with a housing deed and build your house. Craft a door for the house and voila complete safety (if they dont break down your door lol)
Never ever join a clan that lives in a chaos city unless they are your friends and you know them well. It is a liability to play with a clan that doesn't own a holding or live in a good alliance. If you pick a clan that owns their own holding then there will be no more war deccing in NPC cities. Nobody should be complaining about dying and losing so much because it's common knowledge to bank often.
Well, I didn't make it to the 1 month mark... I didn't even make it to the 24 hour mark... I just can't play this anymore... if your clan members aren't nearby, you are meat to any group of two or more... this game is the worst kind of grind I have ever seen... most of your time is spent running back and forth between the gobbie camps and your bank hoping you don't get ganked and lose what you gained... I've said enough, for those of you who have fun doing this, I hope your devs listen to you and you get to play for a long time to come...
How is it a free month if you have to buy the game? lol... Wheres the 2 week trial.
How is it a free month if you have to buy the game? lol... Wheres the 2 week trial.
It wasn't free... it was $50 for 24 hours to figure out I didn't like it

There is 1 month of gametime with the purchase. There is no trial.
OP sorry to hear you got ganked out early...it happens.
Good luck finding a game that you might enjoy a bit more (Aion perhaps something themepark?)
Hah - That's like somebody playing EVE for 24hours and claiming it sucks. You've got a month left - quit your clan and go solo for a while. Or quit your clan and join one that actually has its own city and can protect its members. Why do so many new console-generation gamers have next to no patience? This game is a HELL of alot of fun! Some people get lucky and love it from the moment they begin and some have a hard time on their first day/week and quit. But those that have any experience with MMO's with heavy learning curves (such as EVE) would realise that sticking with games can eventually lead to a crazy amount of fun.
You could just ignore this post and never load the game again... or you could take the hint and keep trying - I think you'll end up pleasantly suprised

Well he did die 10 times to goblins, I think he did give it his best shot IMO

You just made a bunch of assumptions that were way off, the only console I have ever owned in my life was an Atari in 1981 as a kid... If you read my first post you would realize that I did play EvE as a member of a Mining and Manufacturing Corp... I spent weeks reading and learning how to succeed in EvE and had ammassed about $1B ISK and had my own Low-sec lab, etc, but I could only kill Red Plusses and shoot rocks for so long... I tried to get into a larger clan last night but the reply was always "whuts ur skill level"... so I don't really know what to do... in terms of researching the game, most of the community is incomplete or out of date in terms of info...

Eve is alot easier to get into because of Empire Space, a huge area really where you can experience the game without having to deal with PKs, so thats the main reason its successful. You have the sandbox element that you can do whatever, even kill people but it protects you if you stay in high sec forever.
Darkfall just hits you like a freight train as soon as you get out of the city. I was ganked once by a single dude 5 times in a row, got geared up waited for him behind some bushes till he ganked someone else. Then I hit him with arrows and magic untill he ran....he drowned in the closest river because if he came up for air I would melee him
Was very satisfying looting him.
But I loved to PK in a FFA enviroment (AC Darktide)
You know how games are easier at the beginning, then gradually get harder as you progress? Darkfall is exactly the opposite lol this is the hardest it will ever be for you. Once you get allies, money armor and mounts its a whole other game.
There's alot of things to do in DF, but you cant not get PKd at the beginning, unfortunatly.

Just wondering where you did your searching for a new clan. Seems like this link on the DF forums would be your best bet.

Very nice post Kyleran
OP looking through there you might want to try out Apollo
forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php
They need crafters, PVPers and are a mature lot with older (over 30 years old) guild leaders. I used to fight against them in EU1 and they seem like a decent bunch.
EDIT: they still have some minimum requirements, but with the new skill changes you can probably get there in couple days of playtime.
CRAFTING APPLICANTS: (MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS)
-Greater magic at 25 and heal other bought as well as needles bought.
-Parry at 25.
-One gathering skill at 75.
-One Crafting skill at 50.
-25 str/vit no stats lower than 20.
Dont missinterpret my post here, but you really have to be "smart" about how you enter the world of Darkfall cause clearly you are (smart) based on your Eve experience. Darkfall is really like being thrown to the wolfs at day one. So what are your options?
DONT JOIN A GUILD
What do you mean dont join a guild. Joining a guild opens you up to unwanted combat in towns while your trying to craft bank etc. Going guildless early on allows you to build a relatively strong char within the confines and protection of a starter area. You can harvest, craft, build your skills on goblins all realitively PK free. Use a sheild and sword for massive damage mitigation and your almost unkillable while scooting back to town. Once your stronger and have tons of gear banked, venture out further and further each time but at some point you will need to find some friends. Play it how you would in real life, your alone in a new and dangerous world would you just run around hap hazardly?
JOIN A GUILD
But make sure they have a city. A city with a guild gives you the protection you need to build your character and find groups of people to run with you can trust. Plus access to high level harvesting materials.
Thats all I mean by smart you need a plan, you also need to find ways to protect yourself in game. I'm very good at it, maybe been ganked 3 times since NAs release ( I will admit I started on EU-1 though). Its pretty easy to anticipate what people are going to do cause most are morons, just be one step ahead of em.
You made the wrong choice in races, and I would advice you to change. Orks are the smallest race and are surrounded by enemies.
Make a new char and chose one on the human side. It doesn't matter what race you are later in the game, but for the start human/elf and dwarf is the best choice. You have plenty of safe zones as one of those races. Can't help you on the mob thing though.
the start of the game is really tuff, mainly because:
getting used to the wacky controlls.
getting owned by the easiest mobs in the game because your skills are 0, and they are actually pretty tough.
not being able to craft your own basic gear.
but it doesn't take long to get past these first hurdles, honestly.
My blog:
This is a great idea. The type of tutorial AoC had would be perfect for DFO, with obvious tweaks that relate and educate specific nuances to DFO.
I don't quite know what to make of the OP. I would think it an obviously bad idea to enter an open PvP game like DFO without having a little more information allowing one to make better choices. A simple post on the official forums about being new, and asking for advice would likely have resulted in completely diferent initial experience, probably even an invite to a like minded caln; but that requires people know what you are looking for.
Just "winging" it in DFO at the start, is not the best way to go about entering the game.

I really wish this game had a trial or something. All of these stories are reminding me of my early UO days.
Absolutely loved those days.
Total time played: 9125 Days, 21 Hours, 29 Minutes, 27 Seconds
Time played this level: 39 Days, 1 Hour, 24 Minutes, 5 Seconds
ragequit much? lol
Ya you will get ganked, let me guess you thought you could go red or go live in a "CHAOS" city and be safe? notice the word Chaos?
Got killed by mobs 10x in 4 hours, that might tell you that you have no FPS aim or you are hitting high mobs.
There are no zones in this game, a goblin camp will be right next to the Fire dragon that can 2-4 shot u in 10 secs.
Funny when I played this game, I was like, ok if I am not in the tower range, I have to keep lookout at ALL times.
The UI is not the best, but it fits the game, you will notice that there are ways of modifying things, ask in chat, forumfall are bad places to look, but in game is a nice community believe it or not.
Giving up this early tells me, you are trying to find a game that will walk the ropes with you for the first couple of days/weeks.
Sorry to say though, Eve 0.0 was the only time I had fun in that game.
I want to say that I too have been looking for a good MMO like most people seem to be. I struggled through all the theampark games that wow spawned ever since SWG went under. I was very hesitant to try out Darkfall since it had such an aweful launch and bad reviews. When I finally tried Darkfall, well I am now kicking myself for listening to all these people around the net that simply do not know how or do not have the patience to play a sandbox MMO. I should have started at launch but oh well I am playing now and having a blast. Here are some starting tips for anyone that wants to try it out, you may just have finally found your game.
My advice to you and all new players is to NOT join any guild/clan until the folllow happens.
1. Upon entering the world go to this www.afraidyet.net/forums/misc.php click on NA1, towers and easy Monsters. Find a spawn that is near a tower and this is where you grind for the first few days. Use terrain to your advantage when traveling, don't run down the damned road. if you here a horse hide is a bush or a tree or whatever. Once at the tower If anyone attacks you get your ass within range of the tower and they will not follow. Yes you still may die but be aware the type of players that do this crap ganking are not the meat of the Darkfall community, they are the rouges of wow and the rangers of AOC that is all. Most are nonfactors in the game and in life IMO. Real DF players hardly even come to NPC cities at all we are to busy pvping not solo ganking lowbs for nickles. Darkfall has some PvP for all types but the endgame is for large guilds/alliances that have resouces to fund citys and supply items/structures they need. Clan leaders in DF play a game of politics to "win" lands and it is very much like EvE and Lineage 2 in this area.
3. Farm mats and soon as you can get a gathering tool. Ask in someone for a tool or how to get one, I know I give newbs stuff all the time. I actualy tell people to just try logging for the first day close to a tower. This not only helps you get used to the controls but it allows you to gain some gold as you can sell wood or use it to craft other items. Stockpile Everything you can, almost all items in DF have a purpose. mining and Logging also build your Stats up for Melee and depending on the race you choose this is a huge thing when taking on your first gobo. Get in there and cut some bushes down until you get a steedgrass, they sell for around 200-300g now and are the only ingredient needed to craft a mount.
2. When you feel competent with the UI, have your keys bound to your liking and have completed the gathering quests from the Counselor NPC You can now try combat. This could be a day or a week depending on the person. One of the best things I did was bind my sprint key to right mouse and re-bind the toggle combat mode thing that was on it to the TAB key. This alone helped me alot in combat. Play around with lighting effects via the Nvidia Panel or ATI's panel thingy. Turn off Shadows in DF as it hides players and that is a bad thing in this game.
3. Monsters in DF are not like any game I have played. They are not stupid npcs they will attack you if you are in thier sight. They take cover, they bob and weave, hell they even fall back if they are taking too much damage or change weapons from ranged to sword and board. Be careful do not pull more than 1-2 Goblins for a good while. Learn to use the V key which is parry, even with a 2H weapon it works great for reducing damage. Keep and eye on the area around you. If you see your health take a BIG hit there is a player hitting you and head straight for your tower. When you get pretty competent at killing goblins you can start checking out clans. I suggest looking for a clan that owns a city or at least has a city in it's alliance, this link can point you that way. darkfallinfo.com/pmap/ there are alot of great guilds that will take in new players but I will assure you none of them are anywhere around starter towns.
Now you are at least a few days in and trust me the game only gets better the more you play. I mean to say Darkfall is old school style MMO and it is in no way easy, you will die and you will loose items, which are easy to replace, but play smart and you will be fine. This game does not catter to you it has no set path. There are great people in Darkfall so do not base your first few days on the whole community.

I don't understand why you'd need to read and post on forums before you can actually start playing a game... there should be in-game help that guides you and show you what you need to do.
Why is DF different from this? I never read instruction books or forums or whatever before I start playing a game, I expect the game to teach me how to play especially if it's a complicated game.
Sadly, most game that fails don't do this.
Take Anarchy Online, the skill system is really complicated (well done, but complicated) if you jump in the game for the first time it's overwhelming and unless you read forums for hours you have no idea what the hell you're doing and that is WRONG. As much as I love that game and think it's one of the best mmo out there for it's complexity you just can't get away with lazyness like that.
So, yea... it needs (requires...) a basic training when you first start up.
It's one of the reason why WoW is so popular, you load the game and you're guided through your first few levels so you don't feel lost.
My 2c.
Some games require more effort is all. i read at least 6 new player guides before i ever downloaded EVE and started the tutorial. While everyone might not share my zeal, I always recommend people read at least one good guide before starting.
Since then I'll bet I read over 30 guides that I've downloaded from various fan and official sources, and even after two years of playing, have two wormhole guides that I'm working my way through.
DF may not be EVE, but it does require research to successfully play it. DAOC was no different, I had to research maps (no in game map when I started), monster spawns and levels, downloaded and regularly used a spreadsheet someone created to calculate my builds, read through and used numerous crafting guides etc.
Its true, you really don't have to do this for WOW. But that's because WOW is created for "average" gamers.
Some of us are looking for an above average experience that requires a bit of work to achieve the reward.
To each his own.

Well, I took the advice of many and got into a large Clan with many holdings... after a chat with the Clan General in vent I knew it was the right clan for me... very mature, not insanely militay, but serious... it has made all the difference in the world... the main thing is they told me where to work up skills in the beginning without being hastled... but more importantly they have helped me figure out there is more depth to the game, like gathering/crafting increases strenght, wisdom, etc... that alone has me hooked now... it seems that everything in this game effects everything else!
As I said before I did read... couldn't get into the DF forums with my login info until today... there is a lot of info out there on DF but it is really incomplete or dated... the Clan is the only real source of info IMO...
I will say this, DF has the most unique map I have ever come across. I ran 1.5 hours yesterday from my starting area to one of my clan's areas and I never saw the same thing twice. I really felt like I went somewhere by following the map. There are some really cool areas in DF. And you can see them from day one!
Honestly, I have pre-orded Aion online (so no Refund) but I doubt I will be playing it on release now that I see the potential for DF. I think there is a real chance that the devs may pull off here what CCP has done with EvE. Enough said, I will do like the rest and report back after the one month mark!
Thanks to those who gave real advice and encouragement!
You can do it!!
