Here's my attempt to explain a situation in Darkfall politics.
Darkfall Discussion Thread: http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=211464
(Use the map to get a picture of what I am explaining.)
Tensions have been rising between the alliances of CairnBears, Hello Kitty, and Unknown in the East and the alliances of Graveyard and Afghanistan in the West. During the course of 2-3 weeks, numerous raids were coordinated in order to render enemy cities unusable and to inflict moral damage on the civilians. Several sieges were attempted by the Western Alliances against the Eastern but rarely did they succeed.
Meanwhile, Hello Kitty has been renowned for their exceptional abilities of amassing a zerg force of overwhelming numbers by hiring Cairn and Unknown as mercenaries to fight for their sieges. This has enraged the West as Hello Kitty Alliance already has a huge force alone and acquired even more people to fight for them when they already had enough.
As a result, alliances such as Dune, NWO, and Cerebus are becoming aware of the situation to their East and may assist Graveyard in defeating their new enemies. However, other Western Alliances are remaining neutral for the meantime. This is the start of a new age, West side versus East side.

I'm sorry, RP just makes games like this more fun.
It its. nice reading. ty
The funny thing is that this isn't really RP. This is how it currently is on EU1. It's gonna get nasty!
Its going to get crazy. As everyone is waiting for the patch it means no one is going to be bloodwalling.
So here we have it, East side V West side.
Well that was a very complex political system driven by religion and economics and resources. And not at all by 14 year old e peen drivel. When DF gets more sandbox RPG elements like Eve then I might use the P word. Until then .... sorry but this is just runing around killing one another.
What a crock of pretentious drivel.
"Politics:
The science of government; that part of ethics which has to do with the regulation and government of a nation or state, the preservation of its safety, peace, and prosperity, the defense of its existence and rights against foreign control or conquest, the augmentation of its strength and resources, and the protection of its citizens in their rights, with the preservation and improvement of their morals."

And the purpose of them killing each other is?
A friend is not him who provides support during your failures.A friend is the one that cheers you during your successes.
Fun!
Fun!
No really? People play a game for fun ? :O
I ment what's the point of going into war:P In EVE is to control moons that give bajilions.
In WOW it is to get that shiny purple phalic looking sword.
In FF11 it's friendly matches between nations:P
In darkfall what do these alliances gain by going into war?

Through sieging, clans can gain control of cities and hamlets. These give access to farms, mines (mined for rare ore exlusive to clan city/hamlet mines), quarrys, groves and farms that give much higher yield than wild resource nodes. Some cities give clans the ability to craft foundries and shipyards which are used to create warhulks and ships. Ships are of limited use as it stands but are due for some love in the upcoming expansion in October. An important part of alliances is giving protection to its members. Overall it's about fun, fame and wealth.
I find quoting random sources as gospel truth as a little more pretentious. I am sorry but it has been covered so many times how many ex and current players feel DF is nothing more than a poor FPS shooter. I am inclined to agree but then thats because AV failed to implement any features other than a lacklustre combat system. Hence the lack of sandboxed RPG elements.
Though perhaps this new patch will bring logistics and trade with caravans and local banking. Still got a long way to be better than EVE which itself tends to concentrates on the "politics" of e-peen (though least it has a real market which can be manipulated).
Next week diablo is considered politcial.... (and no more quotes please!)

What other experience do you have with a PVP game when it comes to in game politics? The only other game I know of that really had this in spades was Shadowbane. Its not about politics, its mostly about pride and chest beating. You have pretty much glorified a long running bar fight by calling it "political warfare." Way to ramp that up! Darkfall is a failure, its okay though, when it finally sinks in, I will send a "custodial engineer" to come mop up your tears.

That quote had nothing to do with 'gospel truth' but was rather used as it seemed entirely relevent to Darkfall. Relations between clans or alliances within Darkfall are often on a thread and the actions of a single player could cause war (for example, a single player breaching an asset-protection agreement).
My point is that politics is an undeniable part of Darkfall and the fact that you refuse to 'use the P word' suggests that you either lack an understanding of the definition of the word, or that you have never actually been a member of a clan within the game.

When it finally sinks in? I've been playing since early beta and have had an insane amount of fun. I'll keep waiting, eh
Hm, I didn't see any real political interaction in the game when I played, and after that, checking clan forums and posts everywhere around. It's mostly "let's attack here!" or "let's retreat from there" and, mainly "Let's keel zem all!" I think this is not a problem of the community (but it may well be), but an issue with the game itself and how it promotes interaction and organization. The tools are limited, non-combat objectives are scarce, and people just resort to PVP to pretty much anything.
When and if the game provides Alliance tools, possibilities of treaties with in-game options, interactive map and other tools, when we can talk about politics. Informal alliance goes up and informal alliance goes down is not politics, it's PVP.
Let it be the first time I agree with Strix here, hopefully not the last... Darkfall politics is barebone minimum for now. Perhaps in the future it will grow but right now, it’s just PVP in it’s proper sense. I guess you could add an RP element to it and see it as politics but that’s mostly how you wish to see it. Which either way is fine.
The Wardec, alliance and guild system still needs a lot of work. That’s something I’ve began to notice in the last few days lol.
Here let me try to explain the "political" aspect of Darkfall. The politics are like a combination of past experiences, clan discussion posting, and your knowledge of the history of various clans in the game as well as their acts and decisions in the past. The political map provided at df.urme.com helps everyone visualize how events happen for those who didn't participate in the action. It's pretty epic when you go into a war with a great leader giving constant directions. It's quite hard to explain but I love this aspect in Darkfall. Since I have 6+ months of knowledge of Darkfall political history I can understand what anyone is referring to when they talk about the past and how it relates to the decisions of a certain clan or alliance today.
Here is how the vent was like during a siege against our enemies. (not direct quotes)
- Spy says they have 50+ strong in Izkand and they already know we are in Cairn
- Dismount behind this rock
- Quickly launch up from the south walls and clear wipe them out as fast as you can
- Spy says they hired Death (an alliance) and 3 groups of them are coming to help them
- Trade the person on top of the bank for siege hammers and first knock down this guard tower
- If you want melee haste then crouch
- Use your aoe heals on the hammerers
then blah blah blah we broke so many buildings as the spy fed us updated information on their numbers. when enemies finally came here is how it was
- They are coming from 8 kilometers east of us
- 75% of you should be on the south side the rest should defend the east
- They are using invulnerable people spawn your mounts to block them at the entrance
That's a little bit of the beginning of a siege then crazy fights happen but I don't have time to describe anything more
Hm, it still looks like good ole PVP with some scouting. It's a good strategy.... but that's not politics.
Combat in this game seems to be the most important aspect, however, they look very bad and boring (from what i've seen on youtube...). I always see the same 2 spells (blue ball or orange ball) and weapons (spear, 2 handed sword, machet).
It's good to have content created by players like alliances and create their own raid against other players. I would play if i really felt the need to piss people off (it's always fun to tear their hard work apart hehe).
This is why Darkfall is a disappointment. Could you imagine if this game was well-polished with lots of content, AND this kind of activity? It would be the greatest MMO of all time.
I am hoping another company can see the positives of Darkfall and capitalize on correcting the mistakes these guys made.
Yes, quite true. The worst part is that it was sold to us as the greatest MMO of all time.
If DFO can survive, it might come around like EVE did, and bloom into a great game. The biggest problem is that Aventurine is not CCP...
every mmos are publicized as the best of all time.
Remember:
- Pirates of the burning seas
- Age of Conan
- Vanguard
- Everquest II
Yep.. they were all suppose to kick ass.
EVE was pretty terrible at release, you could plug in 3 or 4 microwarp drives on your ship and just never be caught by anything. You could camp Concord and scam people via the broker, there was so many different ways to exploit the game, it was almost worse then Darkfall... let's not forget the lag and weird community... Still, people sticked around and now, 6 years later, EVE is probably the most spectacular game of the era and it seems to be only the beginning. WIS anyone?
Darkfall is young and it was made by an even smaller team then CCP 2003... Give it a year..
While it's true that most game market themselves as the best thing around, ever, DFO took its own hype to another level, and for way too long. One of the arguments I remember seeing somewhere (the official forums, I think, but not sure) is that the game was taking so long to be finished because it would blow your mind right at day 1. That's right, it would be feature complete right off the bat. We all know what happened after that.
Hype is one thing. Overhype for several years is another, and who can blame the people who got disappointed after such humongous horn-blowing?
I do agree that the game can emerge a good product, given some time. I just don't see it happening with Aventurine at the helm. Remember, EVE was bought back by CCP after the original publisher failed miserably and closed shop. This can be a lesson here. If another company purchases DFO, it could get the love it desperately needs.
I mean, c'mon, check their website! www.aventurine.gr/
Can you take seriously an online gaming company with this kind of self-marketing?
There is a huge difference between Eve and Darkfall in one important category: graphics. Due to the setting in Eve, it looked good even without needing a crazy engine to render it. And tweaking it wasnt hard either.
Darkfall's graphics are outdated 5 years ago. There is no way in 5 years this game even exists.
