Casino within MMORPG?

I was reading a old forum post on the WoW community site, and the post talked about how come there is no casino in World of Warcraft.

I am wondering if there is any MMORPG out there has casino related feature?

A main reason is that many countries, and even different states within countries, prohibit online casinos or gambling of any kind. One of the reasons why the EQ2 and SWG trading card games are not open to players in certain states here in the U.S.

There is (or was) a single gambling game in Everquest 2. However, it des not exist on their Exchange-enabled servers for legal reasons.  If the in-game money can be exchanged for real money, then it's considered gambling and a whole bunch of laws apply to it. Since there's a gray market for game currencies, I think most companies avoid in-game gambling just to avoid potential legal complications.

  • I had fun gambling in SWG, although I don't know if that's still part of the game.  Darn thing was so rigged though that I stopped.  :)  Interesting idea though.  Too bad governments are so against it when more than enough people are willing and able to take the risk.

GTA online has casinos.  You can purchase game cash with real life money.  Not sure how that is allowed.

What law do you think prevents it? Purchasing game currency with real currency is nothing new. Online gambling is nothing new. I don't see why combining the two would somehow be illegal, and I expect any potential issues were researched beforehand by their legal staff.

Perhaps if the game had a different ESRB rating it would be a different story, but based on the other content in the game it is intended for adult play.

Last I checked 17 years of age = not old enough to gamble.

Oh that's right, you don't win shit so it isn't gambling its only spending.

edit: Time for that kind of loophole to be closed IMHO

Yeah gambling without the payout and real money pay in sounds awesome.

Not to mention rating system is meaningless with digital purchases. Not that it meant a lot with in store purchases and rentals.

I'm sure you know better than the collective legal staff of GTA Online, and that their publicly advertised illegal activity will draw the attention and action of the authorities imminently.

Personally, I like how casino concept is integrated in some games (GTA V, for instance). Still, I like it real, so found a similar place - https://gamblizard.com/casinos/buzz-bingo-bonus/. In my opinion, it's a good alternative to do some bingo instead :)

As for why there isn't one in WoW, I guess it might have to do with the whole age rating thing or maybe concerns about promoting gambling behaviors to younger players. But hey, that's just my guess. I'm not sure about other MMORPGs, but it wouldn't surprise me if some out there have dabbled in casino-related features. Though I'd be cautious about integrating something like sports betting into the game. I mean, imagine if they had Premier League matches in-game and you could bet on them. It could be fun, sure, but it might also blur the line between gaming and real-life gambling a bit too much for comfort.
