Aion in my opinion, still needs some depth. It is polished, game play is smooth (accept when getting up from sitting down to combat is a bit slow), but that's it. Is the game a failure? Absolutely not. It'll be interesting to see where Aion goes and what it does. But if you're looking for something new and innovative, Aion is not. Arial PvPvE is interesting. I could live without the flight timer. However, the game is worth checking out while in beta and you can form your own opinion.

GFX are subpar in this game.

what is considered par for MMO graphics?  not trying to argue against you, just curious.

Ummm...other mmo's. AoC, Eve online, etc. Aion gfx fail hard.

Yeah siege PVP on AOC is going well isnt it barley 50 people and it goes to hell in a handbag.

Eve sucks ass its all 2d backdrops and the only thing you have to render is the ships themselves and particle effect's

Graphic's are great art style is great and the fact you can get to 200 v 200 PVP with no slowdown says it all.

It brings a solid game with the level of polish expected of a new generation AAA title that isn't simply trying to be WoW and has a community that isn't WoW's.

It also has interesting features that may have been done before but not in this form or combination, like PvPvE raids where you fight the other faction through a dungeon for rights to kill the boss, RvR sieges with Baluar dreadgeon intervention (think star destroyer coming flying around dropping legions of enemies that both sides will have to team up to defend a fortress from), etc.  There is also aerial pvp, which promises to be interesting and different.

A lot of people are attracted to Aion because it is doing things the opposite of Wotlk WoW in a lot of key ways (no class homogenization, level of difficulty, more incentive to group, pvp being a core feature rather than an afterthought, etc).  These aren't new, but old features people like that are getting harder to find in a polished game these days.

    Eve?

You don't compare a Space MMO to Fantasy MMO on graphics...

Eve looks great for it's age, that's for sure, but I couldn't even remotely compare it with Aion Graphic just because the styles are so different.

AoC is the only game that I would looks better, but I have the say Aion beats it on animations.

unfortunately games with that level of graphics that arent space based have, usually, harsh hardware requirements which limit the potential customer base.  I think Aion's look better than most of whats out there at the moment.

Lol wtf, I was talking about gfx and you start talking about gameplay. My top reasons for playing a game is gfx and thats why Aion fails hard.  AoC pwns Aion's WoW type gfx. Anyway this game is carebear with no ffa looting.

It's an interesting opinion that is without a doubt a minority.

Start a poll do you think Aion has fail gfx

    yes

    no

and I bet you will see more than 75% of people say No. (edit, I tricked myself and wrote Yes lol. I started a poll for you btw)

Not that I think the majority agreement is a good way to measure all issues, but in terms of aesthetics I would say it's a good way to tell when someone's just being a troll.

Yea to me gfx are more important then gameplay. And this is why Aion fails in my book, because it has sh*t gfx. ( yes I maxed out Aion's gfx at 1900x1200 with a gtx295 and it still looks like updated wow gfx)

Then have fun in AoC... It will look pretty and play like crap. Just what you always wanted.

Quite honestly, from what I've seen, it's simple yet has it's own flavor. Everyone's always looking for something to outdo WoW or some other game. Truth is, whenever a publisher tries to do something undone, people complain. So enjoy what you got and if you like it, good. If not, go back to your last game.

Every time I am shopping for a new car, I ask myself: "Does this car, that I want to buy, bring anything new to the table?" And after spending several hours looking for 10 exhaust pipes and square wheels, I decide not to buy it. God damn it! Why can't they make a car with 5 square wheels instead of 4 round ones!?

What does it have to avoid that "been there, done that" feeling?

I think people misunderstand about the "somethign new" idea.

You will never get anything that is completely "new". There are always going to influences.

as far as Aion, it's more about how they work with the familair materials and what mix of things they use.

There is not one thing any of you listen to, watch, read, that is new. nothing. it's all same old same old. Movies, music, literature, art.

same formulas, same characters, same key signatures (and I doubt many of you listen to aleatoric or serialized music - which is also not new) same stories for books and movies and games.

But in the end we still experience and seek this stuff out. why? Because it's how these materials are redone so that they are familiar and also fresh.

For the person completely jaded by games like lotro or wow or eq 2 then you might not like this game. It's sort of a mix of lineage 2 and wow but "not".

but it doesn't have to be new as nothing is new.  It just has to speak to us on a level that we can appreciate.

So some will like it and some won't. end of story.

At least I'm defending a game I'm going to play. I've played tons of MMO's and the recent ones like AoC and WAR lack the polish and detail that I've seen in Aion.

I'm calling you a troll because if you're not going to play the game and you hang around in it's forums trying to convince people the graphics aren't good when they think otherwise...you're a troll.

Edit: The same thing applies for your argument on the game as a whole, go on a different forum trolly von trollenstein.

As long as it's fun, it's not too glitchy, and doesn't look like something put together as a side-project in someones basement, I'm happy.  So that'd rule out AoC, WAR and DF for me.  If it's marginally better than any of those, I'm ok.

For those saying Aion has bad graphics, what are you comparing them to?  If comparing Aion to other MMO's the graphics are some of the best the market has to offer right now.  The only one I can think of potentially surpassing them would be AoC, but that would take twice the gaming rig you'd need to run Aion's (this is just personal experience but my comp runs AoC at max settings at about 15-20 fps max, and Aion at max settings at closer to 45-60).

In my opinion absolutely nothing.   Just my opinion mnind you.   LOL!   Wait for it, wait for it....they will come and you'll hear different...but the reality is - absolutely nothing.

Not sure what caused Teala to be such a negative nancy around this game but let me add to the chorus of answers.  From my perspective the game really doesnt bring anything new to the genre, however it appears to have done what it set out to do well, and is likely the most polished fantasy pvp style game on the market.

Since EQ was the 2nd MMO that anyone's ever heard of, we'll start with that one.

EQ: 3D graphics, XP and Level-based advancement system, grouping encouraged, almost required.

DAoC: Combat styles, RvR, including castle and keep sieges, siege weapons, 3-faction PvP

WoW: The anti-social solo-based quest system that we've all grown tired of, EZ mode gameplay with meaningless / non-existant death penalties

Horizons: Empire of Istaria (now known as Istaria: Chronicles of the Gifted): First instance of controlled player flight (yes, before WoW flying mounts), multiclassing, dragon as a playable race / class, deep and xp-based crafting system

EVE: First sci-fi space MMO, unique customization system via skills, ships, modules, ammo, lootable PvP done right, unique skill training system

FFXI: Grouping required (few exceptions), unlockable classes, secondary class system ("subjobs"), main, overarching storyline (not just background lore), cutscenes

CoH: First superhero MMO, *aerial combat*, unmatched character customization

EQ II: Collection system, Achievement system which encourages grouping in a game where WoW-style solo questing is possible, XP debt system

LoTRO: PvMP, traits / deeds system (later copied and failed at by WoW in their achievements system), several storylines w/ cutscenes

Just because 90% of the MMOs released after WoW were WoW clones doesn't mean no MMO ever has brought anything new to the table :/

I wouldn't say that Aion brings much to the table that hasn't been done before though. The flight timer is really about it. Aerial combat has never been done before *in a fantasy setting*, but it happens in CoH, so...

equipment that increases flight capabilities vs. ground combat capabilities promises to bring an interesting dynamic for gear choice and PvP gameplay, and I like the classes that they have, but that's just because they're new :) every game brings their own flavor of classes to the mix...
