Why should I play Aion?

Thanks for the many answers. Maybe I should say I am totally a PVE person. I dont shy away from PVP, but I find it very boring, tbh. It gets very same-ish for me soon. I often hear PVE is just a fast passing through and the goal is the Abyss PVP. Is that true? Or can you enjoy the PVE and quests and RP and just ignore the PVP part? Is it more like WOW (PVE) or WAR (PVP)??

Does the death penalty apply to deaths by PK?
You lose Abyss Points depending on your Abyss Rank. You also gain a temporary debuff. However no exp or gold loss.
Is there any reason not to attack someone you don't know? Any kind of standings they can set or the game sets? A permanent kill log, perhaps - or is it all RVR?
There is a ranking for the players with the most Abyss Points and the Legion with the most. You also have a section within your character sheet with your Abyss Ranking progress, how many you killed today, all time etc.
Are there any kind of level restrictions on PVP?
Not in the abyss, but when Rifting to the enemies side there is. Not sure the exact levels.
Was quixadhal dropped on his head as an infant? Dude we should totally pretend to be his friends then steal his retainer at lunch.
Are there limits to flight that come with any sort of hazard? I'm thinking Tribes or Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Are the maps ever set up in a vertical way so that flight amounts to something more than mere convenience and spectacle, as it did in Burning Crusade? Are there places you can't fly? How do flying and non-flying players interact?
Flight lowers your defense and increases your speed, mobility and different attributes for some classes, like Assassin's gain critical chance while in the air. The terrain is rough, you'll find yourself at an advantage if you stick to high terrain and swoop in and gank players below you. Before you gain a substantial amount of flight time most players only use flight to escape or gank. In the Abyss you can fly anywhere, in your home regions you are restricted to certain regions. They have a story reason for that and it's good because they don't want you to be flying to everything, that can get boring. You can still glide though.
How deep are the dungeons, and are they chopped up into layers or do you physically descend them? Roughly what percentages of dungeons and boss encounters are instanced?
There is a dungeon called Dark Poeta which is from what has been said as big as the Verteron lvl 10-20 map. It's massive and the dungeon takes a few hours to clear. There is also a dungeon where a group from each race enters the map. The objective is PvE raids and a race to finish, along the way you can PvP with the other faction to slow them down. These are just a few examples, the first instance is Black Temple for lvl 30~.
Is control over your character as quick and precise as it looks in some of the newer movies?
Quickest response time I've seen in any game.
Is the game full of stock sound effects, or are they mostly original? Is there a nice music system, or does the game just trigger certain songs to play at particular times? I apologize if this comes across as pedantic, but new and quality sound effects along with an interesting music system are what sells me a game these days. If you can convince me those two answers are enthusiastically yes, I will preorder the game immediately and even pretend to like it for a month. God the music is awful, though. The flute, the seventh chords, the porn vocals - like something out of a Michael Ninn or Andrew Blake movie. Romance and fantasy indeed. Have they changed any of this sentimental pastorale shit for Western audiences? Please?
Yes and no. The music is eastern in theme, somewhat like a Final Fantasy game. The game does trigger certain songs to play at certain times. Theres background music for each region and battle music. You can turn off battle music or the background music entirely but the music quality is top notch. The soundtrack will be shipped with the CE edition. I think the quality of music is one of the great things about this game. However apparently you don't like it however they did change the voices.
Lastly I would like to know about the guild and contacts system. Can you send items in the mail? Can you send messages to people who are offline? Can you add people to contacts while they are offline or at least not in direct sight? Can you pick names off the chat or do you need to type them out? What sort of permissions can be set in a guild? Is there any sort of no-confidence or impeachment system for disappearing leadership? Can you see what area of the world people your level are playing in? Can you search guild names? Most importantly, is it any fun to use? Scratch that, the most important thing is can I resize the chat box, put it where I want on the screen, and set the opacity levels I prefer?
Yes you can send items in the mail just like how it's done in WoW. I haven't tried but I'm sure you can send messages offline, the Auctioneer sent me one. Not sure about adding contacts, direct sight yes. I'm not a professional with the chat system but it seems well done. Yes, there is a player search function also in the guild tab you can determine where everyone is and it has helped me ask for help to complete a quest or two.
Sooner or later I'm going to have to sell my soul for Guild Wars 2, so maybe an early start isn't such a terrible idea.
GW2 is all hype so far so do what you want.

You can lvl to max but at some point you will run into a pvp situation.

It's not like WOW nor WAR in regards to PVP.

PVE is about the same as wow I guess, but the mobs are stronger and if you aggro too many your gonna die, and some area's require a group.

Damn you, you just cost me $60. I want to follow up on the sound thing because I know I came across as a little bit hostile.

I wasn't terribly fair to the music, because I'd been listening to the foreign release soundtrack rather than what you can hear in the few North American or European movies out there which leave the sound untouched. I'm inclined to believe they made some changes, because so far the music is quite good. The two excellent FFXI-sounding songs from the title screen and promotional material are prominent, and otherwise most of the background music so far is less bombastic and overly romantic than I expected.

Sound design is the best I've heard since Age of Conan and before that Asheron's Call 2. All original, as far as I can tell. Strong, sudden sounds that lend a feeling of force and precision to the combat. Crisp, satisfying interface sounds like nothing that comes to mind since Diablo II, or maybe WoW and EQ2 forgiving a few bugaboos.

I cannot stand the stock sounds and the weak, imprecise, and just plain wrong sound effects so common in the MMO industry, and I am very pleased about all of this.

I play wow for 4 years..yesterday tried aion beta...after 30 minutes i logged out...and i know im not playing it...if you want a wow type of mmo..play wow...aion is just another copy that is far from wow polish , gameplay etc...just my opinion...

I can tell you why I want to play Aion, not sure if it will help...

    PvP.

I've played Warhammer, and I'm not at all impressed, the direction of that development team, is just mind boggling, to say the least.  Most other current PvP oriented MMOs are not so impressive either.  So here I come.

I've played to about level 15 or so, which sadly includes no PvP, but what I have played seems ok. Nothing new, nothing overly thrilling. I am however,  willing to shell out the money to any MMO that will put some effort into PvP (someones got to get one right, eventually?). I don't know a whole lot about the PvP in Aion, but i do know its a pretty large focus of the end game.

Aion is nothing like WOW wich is probably why you didn't like it, they don't give exp away like candy. and Aion is extremely pollished not sure where you came up with that. Aion will have the best launch to date they've made sure of it with all the testing thats already been done with the korean and chinese servers, as far as smoothness and without bugs.

and i'm assuming you didn't play WoW at launch it was pretty bad, i remember mobs running at you, through you and run off into the distance all the while kicking your ass and you couldn't hit them(not my internet was a known bug they eventually fixed). i had to play my druid to be able to kill them, i had to root them in place to kill. pets and totems could atack the glitched mobs but if they managed to kill them you couldn't loot because the game thought they was off in the distance.75% of the time you havested herbs or ore it bugged and you was stuck in the loot position till you relogged and didn't even get the herb/ore. boats that dropped you into the ocean and killed you if your hearth wasn't up and couldn't port to land in time. another one was the boat docked an i just fell over dead ended up at the grave yard but alive at dark shore grave yard, later died at EPL and ended up at the darkshore as a ghost no way to get my corpse.pally wasn't even in at launch for wow, wasn't that long for pally but wasn't there launch day.furblog quest was bugged and couldn't be completed for druids. WoW auth server STILL bugged after how many years after launch?i renewed my account just last week to kill time and bs with friends and i couldn't log in for over an hour because of the authentication server.

and Aion has very good gameplay IMO chain skills and more than 1 animation unlike your golden WoW. my enhancement orc shaman in WoW STILL only hit with his right hand when he dual wields.his left arm is in a sling or something, tho looks like they finally fixed the animation for strom strike and they actually hit with both weapons(like the description says) rather than just and extra hit with the right arm with no special animation.

opinions are fine but no need to mislead.i enjoyed my time in WoW but bored with it, i played every aspect, casual just doing the 5 mans (10-15 ones UBRS back in teh day) got bored with that tried out pvp enjoyed that for awhile, got bored with that and raided for like 3 months while i was laid off from work (Vladdrac Area 52). for me it was time for something new and for me taht is Aion. its sorta new in the fact it plays more like an old school MMO with updated graphics and mechanics.
