It's funny. Everyone thinks XI is going to die now because of next MMO. I guess EQ is dead because of EQ2 right? Blah, blah, blah, there is no reason to play XI now and all that garbage. I'll be playing both. I guess the multiple times they kept saying that the next MMO is meant to co-exist with XI meant nothing. Whatever though, just keep on going with the "there is no reason to go back to XI now". You didn't beat anything. Saying you beat an MMO is like saying you learned all knowledge, there is always something new to learn.
The bad part is I am going to be playing 3. I'll be in FFXI, FFXIV (which I have now dubbed Final Fantasy 11 V) , and SWTOR. The EQ/EQ2 parallel was what I was using in talking to my LS yesterday. Same world, differnt universe, differnt (albeit interchangable) player sets. Then today I find out FF11V is in a different world but meh. I just wonder where this new world is in comparison to Ivalice and Vana'deil (which I am convinced are on the same planet)
EDIT^6: And the Agency still peaked my interest >.>
Just to clarify, SE stated a while ago that this new MMO is not going to kill FFXI (somehow) back when the teaser was launched in 2006 for the game code named Rapture. They're probably going to do something like make FFXI F2P for those with POL accounts linked with FFXIV or lower the monthly subscription to attract new users.
I'm inclined to think it's not going to kill off FFXI for one key reason:
1. They're developing XIV with a different target audience in mind, specifically the more casual group - a decidedly different one than those playing FFXI.
Even with the changes they've made lately to make the game more "accessible", FFXI is still far from being a "casual MMO". It's still quite demanding time and effort wise for a large portion of the content. You still need groups for a significant amount of the content as well. It would be a stretch to call FFXI in any way "casual", even in its current state.
In other words, it won't be competing for the same players as FFXI... which is smart on their part, assuming their goal is earn more subscribers overall and not merely shift their current subscribers from one game to another.
So, while I'm sure there will be some overlap between the two (I'll likely play both, if not simultaneously, then at least alternately), there will be people who stick with FFXI, either because they prefer its style of gameplay and/or simply because they're so attached to their characters that they couldn't just "give them up".
There's a somewhat "fringe" contingent I'm noticing who, frankly, need a bit of perspective, to put it mildly.
Just one example: A friend of mine on Vent last night was talking about a friend of his who wants to cancel his FFXI account because he's "tired of MMOs doing this to him.. he spends all his time building up a character only to have it made pointless because a new MMO comes out".
Another person said to me in-game "I've played FFXI since it came out. I can't believe SE is doing this to me'.
It's a strange sort of "victim complex" that I've seen from others about XIV... and, indeed, about other MMOs as well (EQ1 players felt that way about EQ2; AC1 players felt that way about AC2 - some are still bitter to this day about it).
To those people, all I can say is... No one, and nothing is "doing anything to you". It's a company putting out a new title so they can get more customers. In the case of a MMO like FFXI which, even going strong now *is* aging and won't have those numbers forever, SE is smart in creating something new to bring new players in to add to, if not replace, those they may lose over time in FFXI. It's called "smart business". If you don't want to play FFXIV... then don't play it. But FFS... get over yourselves.

I kinda hope there is some loyalty reward for people coming from FFXI to FFXIV. It doesn't have to by anything game changing, but something like the Harpsichord, just something to know they care.

I doubt it will be anything significant, and if it is, then that will just upset new players coming to FFXIV. Honestly, I would think MMORPG players are intelligent enough to know that any MMORPG will usually never last and It's all about the journey not the reward.
Should EQ players be given some kind of huge reward for going to EQ2? I don't think so.

How about a title? It does not effect the game any only your characters name and it's nothing that should make new players all that upset over.
When I heard the news, I listened to my favorite FFXI music. I can't wait, 2010 seems so far away! I did feel like going back and running around for old time's sake, but I don't feel like lvling, buying the newer expansions, or having my HMLS guilt me into doing stuff. heh...
Someone really should do a "FFXI Worldtour" series and put it up on youtube.
I'm a little worried about the emphasis on soloing, and disappointed they're not going for action style combat, but I trust SE to learn from all of their mistakes and make a new, kickass game. Like how they finally put in RMT countermeasures in FFXI late in the game.
The people who complain about how their work was all for nothing now make me worry about their grasp on reality.

Yeah ... like i said it should be nothing game changing ... even if it is a funny hat that you ware at lvl 1 it is still something different. .... OH YEAH! and I best be getting increased inventory with my security token just like I do in FFXI
Definitely not going back to FFXI, only because I like my games to evolve and with FF14 coming, my heart is leaping for joy that the one game of old, FFXI, I did love is finally evolving and they are making a solo friendly FF which is what I always thought would have made FFXI worth struggling with the controls on.
I was excited about the new FFxiv until they said solo friendly I hate solo friendly games. They make no body group with random other people. Why group if you can do it all your self. If they are trying to make FF online like wow and aoc and all other crappy games I'm very dissapointed in SE.
I want just an updated in graphics version of ffxi. But to be boasting solo friendly bahhh.

I tend to think that you will have to group for the most efficent exp (kinda like you have to now), but you might get exp for quests or there will be more campaign like things. Personally I'd like to see public quests. If you look towards WAR there are events that happen maybe once every half hour that you can do and you can jump in and out at anytime. It is something you need a group to accomplish (well maybe not if you high level I was play WAR on day 1) but it isn't like you have to get people ready and stand for an hour for that one job so you can start.

Its sounding more and more like Sony paid Square-Enix a buttload of money so they can announce it on their system at E3, but it'll more than likely get a 360 release at launch as well or within 6 months after! Either way I don't care as I'll be playing it on PC as that is the true MMO gamers machine!!!

Nothing wrong with that. Matter of fact, Sony NEEDS a top line game like these Final Fantasy game to help with PS3 sales. I myself own a PS3 and see this as a good thing. This will bring more players to the system I love.
Hmmm... I wonder what SE would say if we brought this to their attention.
More than likely they know and its all part of their plans. Not much has been revealed or shown yet, and the Square-Enix Press Conference is creeping up really soon!
When is the press conference? Do you know a good site to get coverage from?

To be honest I am so glad that they are coming out with this game. I have seen several people say that they hated FFXI. I understand that its not for everyone. But in comparison to the New Gen of games that have been coming out for the last year or so have not even compared to the amount of fun, experience and friends that I have made to FFXI. I have played other MMO's only yearning for the same experience that I had with FFXI. My friends that I made on that game loyal and great people, made the game experience even more fun that previous. I have heard some amazing things about games but FFXI brought people together. Yes FFXi did have its faults gilserrers, whining people and typical issues.... But those were overshadowed by the people I have met. I have every intention on playing this game and I cannot wait. Thank you Square!!!
This is the best news ever. I'll be there fore sure. My question is.. i remember playing FFXI when it was released here in North America. But at that time it had been released for a year in Japan(?) or some Asian country. Is this game and/or will it be released in Asia before here? When it says 2010 i hope they mean north america and not just japan or something.
Plus I was a tarutaru but I didn't see one in the trailer... unless i missed it?? I'll cry if i can't be the cute little things ^^

I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised by the announcement for FFXIV. I've been without an MMORPG for almost a year now, and recently I've thought I really wanted to play FFXI again. I did the 15 day trial only to realize I don't want to play FFXI but I want to play an online final fantasy thats unique and better!
I guess I am getting my wish! Looking forward to it! This time I won't have to be impatient and Import the game either
