I saw the advance screening Wednesday night, and all I've got to say is it deserves an 11 out of 10. It was well written, well acted. If this doesn't knock that piece of s*** Wolverine out of first at the box office this weekend then people really have issues...!

Is it an 11 because it is a good "action" movie with great special effects, or is an 11 because it follows the Star Trek canon and does the IP well?
I thought the point of this was to Reboot Star trek... Only thing "Cannon" is Origanal Enterprise.
If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude; greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace. We seek not your counsel, nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.
Samuel Adams
Glad to hear it is a good movie.
They need to stop worrying about what the hyper-nerds are going to think of the film, as it follows original story lines. Those people will never be satisfied.

I've never been interested in star trek and think the original and newer shows were pretty lame.
Will I like the movie?
The Official God FAQ
Probably not, but you never know. A lot of people liked the transformers movie and didn't like the original cartoons. Just ante up $12 or whatever ticket prices are in your area. If nothing else, you can flame it on imdb with all the hard-core trekkies that think it is bastardizing their religion.

I like Star Trek, but I am not a trekkie - no conventions here.
Look at it this way - remember Star Wars Galaxies? It's only Star Wars by name.
If this movie is nothing of the Star Trek canon, or remotely similar, it is simply an IP attached to special effects to make money - nothing more. That's all i'm saying.

Anymore, eye-candy is just as important as the story. I haven't followed the movie real close, I don't like seeing the whole movie in previews before paying for it; but I don't think they ever said it would be a rendition of the originals.
Let's face it, they needed a fresh take since the last Trek movies have not done so well. I liked them all, even though they were just like a long episode.
Edit - I thought this was hilarious and totally applicable to the current discussion, check it out.

One major issue I have with the movie is Spock - he was a very old man, by human standards, by the time him and Kirk met - yet they make him age as he was human. Also, Spock never showed emotion in battle - they are simply portraying him as a human with pointy ears. Although he is half-human, that portion of him never really emerged.
Edit: Laugh at the link. And I do agree, the action and eye-candy is important, but still, stay somewhat near the actual storyline.
Looking at other forums, I still can't believe that some people think theonion.com is a real news site...growing them dumber and dumber nowadays.

When I went to D.C. last year, I was suprised to see The Onion in paper form as a free periodical. I was reading it on the subway and the looks of people's faces while staring at the stories was enough to make me laugh so hard inside because I knew they thought it was real.
I didn't know they had a print version anymore. I'd love to carry that around.

Here in MPLS many bars and eateries have the Onion in print. The horoscopes are the best.

Yeah i'! m a trekkie and as much as i love the old lore and all that this new movie, direction, whatever you want to call it, Star Trek needed it!!

I havn't walked out of a movie with a huge grin on my face in a long time.

I am not much of a Star Trek fan myself but the movie caught my attention and will follow the series. I shall give it a 10 out of 10.
Scalebane,
Of course this is off-topic, but is that image in your signature from the movie "The Last Dragon"..?!

Calm down everyone. It's a great action film where you really end up cheering for the good guys in the end. There is humor and comin relief that just works and you really don't have a reason to look at the time to see when it will end because it's just that much fun.
Story is as stories go, streched with some big logic holes and big demands on viewers to kick suspension of disbelief into high gear, but the thing is, it just doesen't matter, it's such a great fun expirience.
I would give it 8/10 as a real score and 10/10 as midweek popcorn flick.
Sorry couldn't stop laughing at your post.
People having a calm discussion about the topic and this guy jumps in "calm down everybody!" ..funny stuff
Anywho going to see it myself on monday with no pre-concieved notions and i suspect i will be well entertained.

Didn't you ever hear the term "calm down" used when someone is gushing over something just a bit over the top? Like calling it 11 out of 10 and freaking amazing, puting exclamation points at the end of every sentence...

So, putting one exclamation point at the end of one sentence is over the top, please if anyone needs to 'calm down' it's you.

Tbh Star Trek has always been boring and it needs hot women and lots of explosions in it to make it good.

I only counted 1 exclamation point.
As for the movie it was awesome. So very happy it broke away from the crushing continuity of "Original Trek". May this new trek live long and prosper.
Oh

and just because.

I saw that the 32nd bolt on the 4th quarter panel of the main hull was 2 1/4 inches too far to the right and immediately walked out of the theater.
So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.
All I have to say is - a movie finally, definitely worth paying the price of admission. Totally rocks! 8/10
Congratulations, you have too much time on your hands.
