"Until yesterday, words such as "gay" and "lesbian" were banned on the forum. Community manager Sean Dahlberg posted that this was because "these are terms that do not exist in Star Wars"."

So were words like "Chevy" and "baseball" filtered also?

After all, neither exist in Star Wars.

wow, that was dealt with very well.  from what i've been seeing recently with MMOs, this is very refreshing.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

Because MMO forums are the exact place people should be talking about their sexuality???  Shouldn't have been banned but seriously, give me a break.

Its a game forum, any offtopic or heated posts are locked and removed from most forums. I think its a good way to save Moderators time and keep the forums on topic. If you want to talk about gay and lesbian subjects do it on the appropriate forums.

Chevy and baseball posts/theads would be moved to the offtopic forums. The point is Gay and Lesbian is a heated subject and people have strong beliefs about that topic and filtering it on a "game" forum is a very smart move.

    Ha ha.

In your opinion, which you are entitled to.

However, Sean Dahlberg said the reason was "these are terms that do not exist in Star wars".

"My intention was not to demean anyone but simply to help promote a community that could discuss topics in a mature fashion," he wrote."

Yes because if you want to promote mature discussion, treat us like we're in a 9th grade Gay-Straight Alliance meeting where everyone that uses those words is out to degrade the homosexual communty.

You just won the arguement for me. This is exactly why the words are now filtered. You start posting things like this and take it personal. Calling people behind the times or old.

Your response is childish. If you don't have a valid arguement or viable information to post don't post at all. Are you saying I am old? I am 27 if thats what you meant. Are you sayin I am behind the times? Because No I am not.

its just a good decision to just filter out offtopic discussion that could lead to discrimination of a particular group. Gay is very often used anyways as a derrogatory aswell. It's just obsurd to bring up sexual preference in a damn video game forum.  Don't post on a game forum if you can't stay on topic.

you are changing your approach to the matter.

and in this i agree with you, actually - and i cannot think of any possible content for this subject to be of relevance on a video game (except perhaps if a group of gays want to share a same guild, etc.)

the point is that you got a childish reply for your previous childish statement: "The point is Gay and Lesbian is a heated subject and people have strong beliefs about that topic." this has nothing to do with your views on relevance, but rather your beliefs that homosexuality is a "touchy" subject, when in reality in this day and age more people than not have an "open mind" about it (or at least I would like to think that way) and do not get offended so easily about it.

No doubt it will advance the gay and lesbian cause for them to be trivialized on a video game forum.

actually, people would expect moderators do their job when it is used in such a derrogatory manner.

How was my first post childish? Gay and Lesbian subjects along with abortion are argueably the two most heated topics today. Those subjects should be discussed on the appropriate forums not a gaming forum, in exception to a game like "The Sims"

you see, i don't see the "gay" subject heated at all. then again perhaps it is cultural, and I acknowldge that some places are more conservative than others.

further more, i don't believe that the crowd who lobbied for this restriction to be lifted wanted to discuss "gay" matters at all; so you don't know what "those subjects" are. they could be starting a gay-only guild for all you know. does that have to be taken to other "appropriate forums"?

Haha. How often do we hear the word "Lesbian" in an mmo? It's not a word people use to hate on eachother really. "Gay" however is often used more commonly when people badmouth eachother. This changes nothing really, people will just prone to use the more unfriendly terms of these words like ghey, f*gg0t, etc etc. Like every other game using similiar Mat. Lang. Filters.

What a waste of time banning these words...

once again this is exactly why the subject was filtered. Useless topics get 30 posts long about offtopic subjects. If a gay guild wants to form thats perfectly fine, just don't use the public forums as a dating site; gay or straight.

Lets just agree that the words should be seen in the content of the post. If someone say he or she is gay or something similar, no problem. If people uses them as an insult, then a ban on the specific person is in order.

SW are made for kids and teens originally so of course isnt sexuality something that is discussed in the movies. To be honest isn't it that important in the game either. I dont care if Jar jar or someone else is gay or whatever, but it isnt really something that the game should be about anyways.

I have nothing against gay people and know a few, but this discussion is kinda silly. Sex is for games like AoC that have adult content, TOR wont have that. Still a total ban on the forum is kinda stupid.

I am kind of on the fence when it comes to the gay guild thing. Its perfectly fine to have a gay only guild, but they are just asking to be discriminated against, they want to be equals in society yet they single themselves out.

At the sametime being part of a guild is about playing with people with similar likes, dislikes, and personalities.

Also if that gay guild somehow gets into a fued or arguement with maybe an immature guild, that other guild may resort to name calling and they might be directing it towards that guild but it would also effect other people of the gay community playing the game too. This is another reason why filtering is a good idea.

The better word would be "touchy" subject.

Gay and Lesbian is a heated topic, maybe not on the westcoast or uppereast, but midwest and southern parts of the US it is.

The better word would be "touchy".

well, here's BioWare and what appears to be the majority of the community (i am basing this on all the fuss which this has created and BioWare's action as a result) sustaining that most can cope with it just fine. perhaps this is the sort of on-going actions that shapes an ever changing society (conservative or not) - in this example by being more tollerant towards gay groups.

maybe, my friend cody, one day people will not think about this twice in the future, be it on video game forums or elsewhere, thanks to what we are witnessing today, wheather we accept it or not.

Im all for giving weak minded people with low self esteem the right to revolve their whole identity around their sexuality. After all we wouldnt wanna form our opinion of people based on the human being they are. Who they choose to sleep with is much more important!

Irony, at its finest. Good on ya homosexual community, fight the good fight you brave souls.

eh, what can i say... i have learnt that any social group (not gay exclusive) which has been or is discriminated has a tendancy to be exceedingly proud and sensitive.

Take jews for instance... to this day they will be very sensitive on the holocaust subject or anything that resembles it. They will lobby, campain and complain at the smallest hint of discrimination, making references to the holocaust and what not. I have met many jews (and some are friends of mine) who, in their pride, will go out of their way to tell you they are jews.

And yes, I am generalising - but aren't we all?
