If they added an item mall to FFXI would you still play?

Calintz333Calintz333 Member UncommonPosts: 1,193

If they did the same thing they are doing to EQ and EQ2 and VG well basically All SoE games to FFXI would you still play?

The item mall would be 100% cosmetic, but the best LOOKING gear in the game would come from the item mall and only the item mall. This on top of the subscription fee already of whatever you pay monthly. Would you still play FFXI if they added the item mall? Would you continue to support SE? or would you quit forever and sell your account?

I love FFXI but I think If they added an item mall to FFXI I would not care to sell my account to whoever would buy it. Be that a gold farmer or a player. I am 100% anti item mall in every possible way. I even avoid 100% item mall F2P games because the item malls are unfair. an item mall in a P2P game even if only cosmetic is just extortion of the player base.

To me I can just never feel comfortable playing a game with an item mall. I always feel like I am unable to get everything I want out of my game which really pisses me off.

What would you do?

I chose the first option - keep playing and ignore it even if it had the best looking gear - because it's FFXI. However, the moment that item mall starts having equipment with comparable bonus to good ones obtained in-game, I don't see myself staying in the game for long.

Item malls leave a negative stigma for me. I'm not 100% against item malls because I've played some pretty good F2P games with item mall business models. However, I've seen too many F2P MMOs deteriorate because they relied on item malls for income.

From my experience, most subscription MMOs build content by adding more game play to keep their players interested, but most item mall MMOs are driven to build content by adding more items for players to purchase in order to maintain competitive or just to keep up with latest fashion. Eventually, I usually give up on item mall MMOs because after a few months I'll see nothing new in the future to keep me entertained.

There are good Asian item mall MMOs that focus on providing new things to do and rely on natural patronage from entertained customers, but they don't become cash cows,  so the ones we see come overseas all seem like their publishers just want to make quick money selling digital property and then move on to the next item mall.

If they compensated having an item mall by making Tetra Master free or something, then I would probably "Keep playing and ignore it even if it had the best looking gear". It wouldn't be so bad since the item mall would only be used for aethstetic purposes, and not for actual gear that matters.

But if they just added an item mall on top of everything they're already charging for, I'd not only unsubscribe, I'd set my '08 collection box on fire and throw it in the middle of the street until it burnt to a crisp, and then dance in its dead ashes.

-Square charges people to buy FFXI.

Of course, it's common sense for developers to charge a fee for their games.

-Square charges a monthly fee for FFXI.

Charging a monthly fee for a MMO allows developers to get the revenues to properly develop and expand their MMO, so sure.

-Square charges people for the expansions to FFXI.

With the amount of content that comes with each expansion pack, they are definitely worth buying.

-Square charges a monthly fee for some mini-game, Tetra Master, that comes along with FFXI.

Um, alright? I mean Tetra Master is just a mini-game. It has no depth to it. It's like checkers. I don't see why they should charge a monthly fee for this for the people who are already subscribing to FFXI, but whatever.

-Square adds an item mall to a game that you not only need to buy to play, but to pay to play on a monthly basis as well.

This is where I would draw the line. At this point, they would be raping the cash cow.

But money issues aside, if Square were to add an item mall, it would make them the biggest bunch of hypocrites ever. Out of all of the MMO companies, I would say that Square is the one most against item malls/RMT when it comes to FFXI.

I wonder how many people actually play Tetramaster. My guess would be only a couple thousand. If that's true, I think they should just make it free.

Tetramaster probably hasn't been updated in ages. It would probably have been more enjoyable for players waiting to get parties if the developers had taken an extra step to make Tetramaster playable within FFXI.

If you listen to what you said, if you were SE offering Tetramaster and a couple thousand were playing for a dollar a month, that would be an easy 2k a month with like no investment. I see why they don't have to bother making it free. They put no new effort into it and make money on it anyway.

Also, there are so many side things to do in XI now there is no need to really just sit around and seek for an invite.

If they added one i would quit for sure. But like someone else said SE is against RMT so i don't have to worry about them doing that (I Hope).

I'd pay an extra $1/month if they would integrate TM into FFXI. If i can sit in a zone and play TM while LFP or waiting for a shout I want I'd do it in a heart beat. I think a lot of people would. What sucks about it now is you need to be logged out (or temp logged if they even still have that feature)

What exactly is this item mall? I don't play SoE games and I am out of the loop on that kinda crap. Is it some micro-transaction system?

first of all, item mail already exist in FFXI.

SE offer people with ACTUAL REAL item and give you an ingame item as well...

Just like the chocobo doll... you can get a BIG tarutaru side chocobo doll sitting in your room if you brought the real chocobo pushie doll.

That's not an item mall. The perk is that you get an in-game item with the real life item you bought. These item malls are exclusively in-game items in which you have to pay real money for.

i see them the same thing as those perks.

Include that talisman that give a nice look armor

or even that mog shield (or was it hat?)

    and those key chains.

If you want to go that far, how about anyone that attended the Fan Fest? The free in-game items they get are along the same lines since they have to pay for tickets.

    They need to move fan fest to somewhere other than socal. It pisses me off. World wide game and they can only do shit in toyko and sacramento ... Maybe have a third one in New York? Baltimore? St Louis? Atlantic City? Toledo (wait ... maybe not ... eww)? Denver? Someplace where OTHERS who play the game can {Gather Together} {fun} {excitiment} {Reward} + {Mithra} {woman} {fun}

I'm down for a Fan Fest if they made it in NY.

Honestly  "IF" they added an Item mall.. I don't think it would ruin the game or take anything away from it.  However I would think if such a thing came up, they would be wise to do something else to add popularity to the item mall... Like make the ORIGINAL CLASSIC version of the game Free to play!  This would entice players into getting into FFXI, or rejoining the game.  The item mall could then be  used to get money from those F2P accounts to entice them w/ xp x2 for 1 day or Upgraded Weapon that can't be matched for their level.  You know things to push these newbs (or froobs) into leveling quicker and want to pay for new content!

Go ahead!! Add An Item Mall..  Make the ORIGINAL game F2P too, help get more players into FFXI and add more lower level characters on all realms to help those still playing and wanting to level new jobs, easier time finding party's!

I don't see how that would work unless they were in their own little server or something. People getting stronger items just from paying more money? That's the unfair advantage they've been trying to keep away for so long. That and how would it feel to be partying with a newbie that has better gear than you because they paid RL money for it and you're just screwed cause you didn't.

I'm all for an east side Fan Fest. Orlando would be preferred. That convention center they have there is ginormous.

Also known as late 2004 - early 2006. Happned, almost destroyed the game.

Pretty much. Makes me wish I had just saved my gil and not bought anything during that time.

I am almost the same way. They way I think of it is I have the items I need now. No matter what I paid for them, I have them. I plucked 3 PCC from UO (1 kept 2 sold). Because of that and the fact I have most of what I need I honestly have enough money to get me most of my items forever. Everything else now is just icing on the cake and it is nice to know I never HAVE to farm again.

I am still working off profits from the sushi sale boom during that time too. Then everyone started trying to get my profits and prices plumetted. Sad to ... I took about 3 months off in the middle there. If i just kept cooking i'd have gotten another few million from the sales.

  • SatimasuSatimasu Member UncommonPosts: 900

I didn't have all that much I needed around that time. I think the only thing that was kinda' expensive I bought was a Weskit right before I couldn't play for a while. If I hadn't of bought it, I would have saved all that gil when it dropped to like nothing. All of the other big ticket items are a joke in price now, so I just bought them and don't have to worry about it anymore for the most part too.

Same with me and moats. I couldn't play for 6 months because I didn't have internet to play, so around that time is when the prices were beginning to drop. I would have still made out like a bandit with that if I could have still been fishing them.

I am all for it as long as the item mall would be 100% cosmetic AND if the money that is generated by the item mall is used to make more in-game content that all the players can enjoy.
