Hey folks
I've really really tried to like EVE - I really enjoy a number of things about it - the interface is amazing, the graphics beautiful, the player run economy is a great idea, I love the freedom offered to you and I think the skill training system is interesting. Because I like all these I have gone back to EVE twice however I keep comming back to a pretty important point, while I think there are some really great ideas in the game and I am quite impressed with CCP as a developer overall I find the gameplay gets horribly boring after a month.
I would normally class myself mostly as a PvE player and while I know that is not the main focus of EVE I never feel ready to head into 0.0 and start getting involved in the PvP aspects of the game. If I remember correctly my character has around 10mil sp, some of those are industrial, a few Caldari BS skills / missile skills etc etc. Whenever I make a list of the skills I want to have before moving into 0.0 I come up with a list which will take me over 2 months to train, in the mean time I'm left to do the same repetative stuff day in day out while I watch the timer on EVEMON slowly tick down. On all three of my EVE attempts the same ting has happened, I make a skill plan, I enjoy the "new" feeling for the first two weeks, over the couse of the next 2-6 weeks the game gets more and more dull as I grind out missions. Eventually I get annoyed - join a corp to do some PvP - go out and get blown up then faced with the prospect of running around high sec for an hour or so as I buy and refit my ship I quit.
I can never seem to find a goal in EVE I will enjoy achieving, I've tried
-Mining - tbh I have no idea how anyone can do this
-Manufacturing - I found this a a little more enjoyable once I stopped trying to supply myself with ore through mining howver it tends to involve a lot of hauler runs from one place to another which get dull very quickly
-Mission running - interesting when starting off however it gets dull once you've done the same mission a number of times
-Trading - again interesting to start off but all the traveling starts to get dull pretty quickly
The stuff I havn't tried
Exploration (too many skills needed) / Ninja salvaging, can flipping, ore stealing (I dont really enjoy making other people miserable ) / FW / most types of pvp
FW did apeal to me - I could try it out without having to move all my stuff x jumps however if I understand it correctly if makes cuts you out of a large part of empire and makes the rest a little unsafer which could be trouble when I am trying to play my 2 main sources of income.
I have joined a number of corps - some of them were flat out exploiting their members / one of them did "ops" which involved everyone ganging up to get mining link bonuses and then go min seperate belts and one pvp corp which constantly tried to run the same gate camp on a gateway to 0.0 and kept loosing.
Am I doing something wrong or is EVE just not the game for me?
Comments
I think you've just found the wrong Corps.
Good corps make certain aspects of the game like mining and mission running fun imo.
I don't understand why you have to wait two months to goto 0.0, Hell i went right after I could field a ship good enough to Rat in 0.0 belts for cash. I took a pvp ship and a ratting ship into 0.0 within six weeks of playing.
in the six weeks prior to going to 0.0 I was hardcore farming missions for a good sized cash pool (so I didn't have to rely on old players to give me ships and stuff). I didn't have time to be bored since I had a goal I was working toward (needed to make isk).

EVE, the only game i've fallen asleep while playing.
Find a decent corp that fits your play style. If you want to PvP, find a real 0.0 PvP corp. Or even a FW corp if you desire. But try to find one that actively has battles and if you want alot of action, preferrably NBSI (not blue shoot it) rules. Tell them what your looking for and let them know you dont want to just camp gates.
Dont be scared to PvP. Even if you dont got money. You dont really need money to use a frig. You can learn what to do either by doing ALOT of reading on PvP, or finding a corp who is not scared to train you. But the thing is, you wont get too far PvPing alone. The reason I recomended 0.0 PvP is because it is more fun as a new player when you first start fighting for a "reason" - and with a 0.0 corp you will have friends, enemies, etc.
Then don't be a bitch and actually go kill someone instead of watching a lazer hit a rock for ten hours straight.
the way I play Eve if i fell asleep in space I would wake up in a pod or back at my station .

Humm, Do i sense a disturbance in the Force here and could this lead to changing mind set at CCP. What is this talk, it is only to be seen providing minerals money and time to your corperation the Director will decide how your game time will be used.

LOL, true story, I'd have to say death by recliner as being my number one cause of ship loss.
Always fun to wake and find yourself alone in a system 20 jumps from nowhere wondering, where did the rest of the fleet go?
Hey, I'm old, and work too many damn hours, it isn't from a lack of excitement, thats for sure.

guess I tend to overprepare - finding a good corp can be a nice trick - most of the good ones have some pretty high SP demands
What do I do in EVE?
I pirate in low-sec. Sometimes I fly solo, sometimes with a group of corp/alliance friends and I/we try to ransom ships/pods and, if they won't pay, we blow them up!
Generally we fly small, and mostly inexpensive ships. Sure, I lose a ship now and then, but it only takes a few minutes to replace since, whenever I need to I get my alt into a mammoth, fly to Jita, and buy 6 new frigates plus fittings all at once and then fly back to my base of operations.
I can't overstate the importance of a good corp with good people. Doing things with people you enjoy spending time with is one of the things that makes EVE a great game!
Most players make this mistake when going to 0.0, they over train thinking they need the best skills and then kick themselves saying "I could have been doing this three months ago in a cruiser!!!!!"

To the OP :
First off let me say I don't intent to "convince" you to stay. Every game isn't for every person, you either like it or you don't and there's no point in arguing about it.
That having been said, if you DO decide to stay in Eve here's my advice to you.
1) Bigger is not always better.
2) Affordability is a quality. Yes t2 is better, but t1 is dirt cheap.
3) Fly ONLY what you can afford to lose. The second you undock, consider your ship gone.
4) If you have a solid alliance, you can live in 0.0 pretty much from day 1. To make money you can ninja mine bistot, you can also salvage other people's wrecks, and pick up loot they leave behind. You can also make money looting dead wrecks in gatecamps. Your t1 fitted Rifter costs 250k or so (some corps give them out free), looting just 1 t2 gun from a gatecamp can pay for your rifter 10 times over. Of course you should CONTRIBUTE to the gatecamp by acting as a tackler, keeping ships from flying away so your alliance mates can kill it.
5) You can also create a jump clone in 0.0 and have days where you jump back to empire to run missions for a few hours, then the next day jump back to 0.0 to help defend the space.
6) Do not run around the universe to equip your ship. Base yourself in a HUB station where everyone comes to trade. Even if it's a little more expensive, at least you don't have to run around picking up afterburners from 20 jumps away.
7) Playing the game is MUCH easier with 2 accounts. You can use 1 as an alt hauler to move your gear around. You can also use 1 char as an empire carebear to make money for your main. Or trade. Or manufacture. Or whatever strikes your fancy.
8) I repeat. YOU DO NOT NEED 10 MILLION SKILLPOINTS TO LIVE IN 0.0 you can start PvPing and having fun from day 1 provided you use cheap equipment and are prepared to take losses. T1 frigate with scrambler, AB, some guns, very cheap and useful as a tackler.
9) Warp to a belt. If there are rats, warp away. Warp to next belt. Do this until you find a belt with no rats. Now find the best ore you can see on your overview, and bookmark it. Fit your frigate with mining lasers and cargo expanders. Mine, dock, mine, dock. This is ninja mining and in 0.0 it's good income for a newbie. Use that income to support your PvP habit while your skills cook. Someday you'll drive a BC and rat 1.8 mil rats, or you'll drive a hulk and tank the rats.
10) If you play let's say 2 hours a day, spend 3 days a week earning money. The rest of the time, spend it camping gates, PvPing and having fun. On days there are no fleet ops, go ratting, go make money. When they call for everyone to x up, dock and get your expendable ship and x up and prepare to defend your space.
11) Your money-making ship is NOT the same as your PvP ship. You might rat in a drake, and use a t1 cruiser for pvp. Your PVP ship is specifically a ship that you have earmarked TO LOSE. Your ratting ship should run/dock/get safe at even a WHIFF of trouble. If you see hostiles in local, dock NOW, then report it, then get in your combat ship and wait for a gang to form and join it.
making a list of skills to train before moving to 0.0 is just holding you back. once you've trained those skills you'll find another list that you want to train, and another and another. just do it.
hmm not sure what your asking .... what we do in eve .... or ..... what you are doing wrong in eve......
Since everyone has ansewered your post, i'll answer the thread title.
I am a pirate. I roam solo or in small gangs and i gank unsuspecting people ratting or rarely people who are missioning. Sometimes i ransom people, although i mostly just ransom pods, the only time i get ransoms for ships is if i'm in a gang. Since i am learning the game still and still a bit of a noob, i buy and sell GTC's to pay for my losses until i get enough skills and knowledge to have piracy pay for all my bills. ATM i am training to get into larger ships (ie, BCs and cruisers) since my Thrasher just isnt cutting it anymore.

I manipulate.
The mind is a malleable thing and, if you choose the right people, you can make your ISK without even having to undock. The right words, a little bit of reputation...all you end up needing is a little bit of literary prowess.
No, I don''t care about your opinion.
I lolrp a terrorist and blow the shit out of anyone who i suspect of collaborating with the enemy. i make my money by playing the market and inventing, also, carebears drop officer/faction modules surprisingly often.
thankfully of course their comedy officer fitted navy megas go down pretty hard against a vagabond or two.
