A good amount of people enjoy bashing Eve onlines Pve.
Personally while I find it lacking compared to the pvp side of things.
I strongly believe its inline with the majority of other mmos.
Eve has missions that you can solo or fleet up for. the Missions are rewarding, there is Standing to grind so you can buy cool unique ships off a Vendor. We have random spawn rats that drop good loot and can be salvaged, Multi-stage complexes that require a group, different types of mining, trading and crafting.
Whats left?
I played lotro and that game had quests, dungeons (complexes), crafting, gathering and random spawns to take down. It was the same shit imo.
I understand If eve isn't for you, you may not like the combat or how severe the death penalty is but give me a break with the Pve bashing, it's the same crap every other mmo has.

Eve has very few quests/missions compared to LOTRO or WOW. Its missions are no where as elaborate as the scripted sequence as those two games. Its 'dungeons', at least the early ones, do not have multi-stage scripted boss fights, with many different special abilities. The list goes on and on.
And just read their new expansion press release. Even CCP knows that they want to improve in this area.
The regular missions in eve are (in general) boring as hell, cookie cutter, repetitive, and viewed by many in Eve as a means to an end only (standing for research agents or empire POS, LP for faction gear, etc).
This makes the missions in Eve pretty much like the quests in every other MMO I've tried. As I recall there was a bit more variety in the quests in WoW and LOTRO but they still always boiled down to "kill the epic boar to get the golden pigskin for whatever" or "kill enough evil peons to collect enough peon hats for whatever."
Here's how I look at Eve:
It has the greatest PvE of any game ever created. There is only one mission, and it is called "Survive and Prosper" and you are playing against the greatest AI in the history of gaming... which is the other 30k people online at any given time.

It makes me appear that I am not knowledgable enough in the subject I am discussing to be able to translate it for people outside the field to understand. Some advice you might consider as well)

In both games missions/quests are a means to a end. In Eve you run them for Standing, Cash and LP Store rewards In Lotro/Wow you run them for faction, cash, Rewards and so you can level up.
Lets try not to forget that Eve is a Spaceship MMO, how would you get multi phase boss encounters in Eve and still keep it realistic? We already have Npcs that come wave after wave, Npcs that Escape, scramble, target jam and Named Npcs that are tougher to take down.
In WoW/Lotro you have kill quests, fetch quests, rescue quests, boss kill quests and others. We also have these in Eve but thier called missions.
Many people that play Eve enjoy its missions and in march with the revamp those players will be even happier.
Seems pretty equal to me.
Oh lets not forget that Eve has a million freaking ways it can be played, fantastic pvp with risk and a real player driven economy. Other than people wanting a avatar to walk around on screen how are any of those themepark games better then Eve online?
ok only read the first page so if I repeat anything that has already been said, never mind...
But what I would say is, PvE is like a 'job' within eve, you only tend to do it to fund other more fun activities, like PVP, don't like pvp? well there are many other areas you could try, mining, manufacturing and trade (although trade is classed as pvp to some)... As someone said if your trying to play eve solo, then you are doing it wrong, get a headset, join a corp download a voice server they use or use the ingame one, its a whole new world, and alot more skill is required as you will quickly find out.. Level 1 missions are easy, and have low payouts, so would naturally be the most boring of the lot, if you just sitting there using one ship and one setup, then that is bad, play around try different ships, upgrade to higher level missions and bigger ships.. One thing I would say I have found about EVE, is generally if you find it boring, your doing something wrong, its a sandbox game, you have to make your own fun in most cases, I thought I would never try pvp, but I did and ok I lost some expensive ships and only blew up some cheap ones, but it was fun, but I cannot stress the importance of joining a corp, even if its just a teaching corp like eve university.. Final thing about eve, do your research, use the forums to find out about different parts of the game, before you play, find out more whats available and whether certain parts may live up to your expectations.. Overall a good review, solo missioning on level ones with a missile frigate, will be easy and boring...
It is not MY job to make a game fun for me. It is a developer's job to make it fun for me. If i have to play a game the "right" way to have fun, hey .. i won't bother since there are plenty of games that i don't have to.
Plus, it is an obviously mistake to NOT make early mission fun. That is where you grab the new comers. Look at all the other successful games. They make the newbie areas *good* to hook players (and some fail to deliver at higher progression).
I have done some research about ship load out and stuff. That was fun but early PvE in the game is not .. and that is too bad because Eve just lost me to its competition.
Let's see if the new expansion can remedy that.
posts like the quoted are WHY you see so many eve players post things like "ok, bye".
this is a pvp game.
eve online is a pvp game.
ccp created this online space game, and it's a pvp game.
ccp created a pvp game called eve online.
now that we have that out of the way...
a pve courier mission, to bring something somewhere, and that takes 2-4 jumps total... zomg, i got the same one TWICE in a row. really? you're sitting there reading everything in every mission and it hurt your feelings? there's a hell of a lot of DIFFERENT missions and different story texts respectively.
the whole 5 minutes for a courier mission hurt your feelings and was boring cuz it was the same courier mission twice in a row?
but you love wow? you love having the same daily quests and the same "kill X" or "bring this to there" quests in wow? but it's boring in eve. really?
oh, da pve in eve is soooooooo boring.... do a combat mission. do combat missions for different factions. you want to see different things, do that then.
oh , but it's all the same, i go shoot things (just like wow) and i kill X amount for a reward (just like wow).
all i know, is that pve-missions are a tool. exploration (sub-profession) is a tool. spying w/cloaked ships -- another tool. hauling, mining, producing/industrial, etc -- tools.
i know the cool thing to do is to say that eve pve is boring. BUT, the people that are saying that, are (correctly in their view point) limiting it to mission running.
i say that everything else is being excluded from pve; because in everything else -- you can (and possibly are) competing with other players, and therefore it's considered pvp.
exploration -- someone could beat you to the site. someone could get to the site you're at and try to get the goodies before you do.
trading -- other players could be trying to corner the market on your products
hauling/courier -- other players could be purchasing the same npc goods, or trying to get the same type of courier (player made) contracts as you.
producing -- odds are, someone else is making the same "stuff" you're making. or, you're producing ships/mods for your corp/alliance to pvp.
moon mining / ice mining / gas cloud harvesting / 'roid mining - is there any game where mining is "fun"? at least in this one, you've got quite a variety of "stuff" to mine, especially when compared to other games.
i guess i'm missing where games like wow have any real courier/trading ingame, or exploration, or a number of other items which would fall under "pve" in that no one has to e dead-booked in order to complete said mission/quest.
but yeah, if you're comparing pve/pvp in eve to that of other games --- you're seriously comparing apples to kitchen sinks. there's a lot of pve elements, that you CAN (and many do) consider to be pvp elements, simply because of how eve is.
Right on I was trying to say the samething-- I love the Sandbox PVE and that is where EVE shines. Trading, stocks, player run banking, marketing, production, and exploration. Although I dont enjoy exploration (finding sites) - I did enjoy teaming up to do them once someone got the hit.

LOL .. have you actually played WOW/LOTRO?
For example, there is a quest in WOW that you summon a spirit wolf, and it will find hidden enemies for you to kill (without animation and running around). There is a quest in WOW that you have to a) get a mob to get an orb, b) mark another enemy with the orb and a sequence of a flying monster will come down to swoop up the second mob. There are quests that you need to ride a dragon, there are quests that there are little summoning scenes of the bosses you are going to fight. Scripting is everywhere.
And the most elaborate one is you follow thrall into and take back Undercity .. a whole waht 30 min quest with scripting and events.
It is easy to put phasing into boss fight if CCP just devote the resource to do so. How about switching tactics or use a new weapon when its shield is 50% depleted? How about a capital ship launching escape shuttles that you need to track down? How about another capital ship spawn to help the first one?
Plus, i am also saying that EARLY missions in Eve are badly designed. Give more variety and content to L1 & L2 missions. That is where you grab your new customers.
The revamp in march is exactly to improve this aspect of Eve which is pretty weak.

WoW has some decent quests from what I can vaguely recall (been long time since I've played).edit- well its good for newbies that is- I tried to go back for Burning didnt make it past a week was just grind
CCP is too smart to waste a lot of man hours on adding a lot of L1 content since most players know to AFK those.
To challenge myself in L3- I bring a frigate and even then it was easily AFKable with my Assault frig the other day. My drones killed the rats before I could get a lock.
And have you done the high level PVE content? How many pve'ers do you think will want to risk their high end ships for a PVE mission?
sure people group to PVE in EVE but that stuff is in 0.0 - repeat 0.0 where anyone can come in your mission and gank.
Now, I know nothing of the L5 Agent missions but for Exploration sites we grouped for those and watched Intel for pirates with close eyes even in our own space we owned
Someone can fill you in on L5 missions but I suspect those are in 0.0. I know the COSMOS stuff or whatever that high end PVE dead end space was- it was in 0.5 however you had to cross 0.0 to get there and we took heavy losses to pirates to get there. Note- PLAYER pirates
EVE is not a PVE game. Even the PVE rats will cause you to lose your ship. and trust me high end T2 ships not even really insurable. This game is not for you by a longshot.
Too bad there is no WOW in space. I will sub in a heart beat. And in fact, even CCP knows that adding content is the direction to go. Don't they promise some more content and revamping the mission system in the expansion? Sure sure you do not want those content but a lot more people do want those content in a different setting than WOW. Whoever produce that first capture the market. I state my preference very clearly and CCP *almost* capture me as a subscriber. I will see if they can do that in the next expansion. It will be an interesting competition between Eve & JGE.
I would do the same .....makes me miss Earth and Beyond.... Could have used my Zets, Hellbores and Tengu-Reavers in Eve that would have been PWNAGE on my haulers and miners..... BIG, STRONG !! WOW!!..... TADA-O
I played Eve myself for about 16 months had ice harvesters battleships joined several corps lost over 2 billion in isk in destroyed ships eventually quit when i lost my last Megathron (After the loss of several Apocs and many Megas) to BoB and they just set up shop in our home station. Then after lvlling both of our POS because we wouldn't pay them protection money (no we didn't move into their territory they moved into ours) and podded us over and over and over and over and over..... for almost 2 weeks. At that point my corp broke up as did all my others. I said this isn't fun and i have not been back since...
--To me Eve is a game with small bits of fun covered with huge chunks of blah and sprinkled with ZOMG and WTF!!!
-- On a Side Note: Hey to any former Lucri Causa members or Northern Star Alliance ppl you guys were great to play with..just too many A-holes (BoB and MOO this means you) to keep it fun for me.
-- I agree with the OP on the PVE in EvE. It is a joke at best and mind numbingly easy and/or severly unbalanced at worst. it sorta jumps from super easy to no chance without help and a much better ship no real progression in difficulty. (btw most missions are super easy)
P.S. don't get me started on mining ..... the worst most boring thing you can do in eve even in 0.0 space (Mine and/or die) I remember many a time when i wished warp would engage a lot faster on my indy ship...
P.P.S I really do hope they make another Space SHIP based PVE MMO with pvp i have great hopes for STO
From WIKI: "The psychopath is defined by a psychological gratification in criminal, sexual, or aggressive impulses and the inability to learn from past mistakes. Individuals with this disorder gain satisfaction through their antisocial behavior and lack remorse for their actions." A complete lack of empathy, baby seal clubbers, people who like to torture little animals like kittens and puppies.
Long ago I got to level 40 in a WOW PVP server, and I ganked my first lowbie, a level 35. I felt so guilty, so unsatisfied, and so dirty I moved to a non PVP server right then and there.
Eve Online has about ten thousand subscribed psycopaths.

The whole point is that i canNOT do any high level PvE content in the 21 day trial. I am not high enough. And a game needs to be good at ALL levels, not just high levels.
If they *can* make high level fun, they should be able to do it at lower levels and that is more effective to hook players.
P.P.S I really do hope they make another Space SHIP based PVE MMO with pvp i have great hopes for STO
I am hoping either the new Eve update will help .. or failing that Jumpgate Evolution will be that game. JGE has very different combat mechnics (twitch base) but it seems to be going the direction direction in putting in pve content.
They are going to have "dungeons" and "boss (big capital ship) fights". I hope they have better quest content and more importantly, power progression.
To all those moving on to 'greener pastures' with 'excellent PVE content' if and when they come out : Best of luck, and...
CAN I HAZ UR STUFFS (When you leave)
Sure. But i only have one lowly missle frigate. If you want it, you can have it.
gee thanks, drop me ingame name and we'll get in touch! Also will be happy to receiver EVERY SINGLE THING you own, including isk, character etc. Since you wont be coming back (eve is crap anyway) might as well give your stuff to someone who will put it to better use and have fun with it

My trial account already passed. If you want to reactivate it with your own money to get my stuff. Feel free. You can have everything. It is not like i gather a lot in 21 days anyway.
You can't even really say you have played EVE until you have spent a few months in 0.0
The 21 day thing is there simply because it is the industry norm to allow people a taste, in most games you could be 3/4s of the way to maxing out your character, whereas in EVE you are a nobody for at least a year.
It's MUCH better in groups. Missioning in groups. Mining in groups is actually quite fun. Fleet pvp is so much fun I can't begin to describe it, it's almost as fun as sex.
The content of Eve is not the NPC's.
The content of Eve is the other players.
Also at least %25 of the entertainment value comes from voice comms. When you're sitting there in a tense moment, and someone cracks a joke, the whole fleet breaks out into laughter.
Just posting in here to say that I actually enjoyed doing the level one and two missions I did to get up to the higher levels. I'll grant that they are repetitive and perhaps require a little too much grind to finally get to level threes but my fascination with the game and its mechanics allowed me to overlook that while I was learning the game and interacting with my corporation. The sense of wonder at doing grouped level 4s while I was in a Ferox not really able to do much more than tag along still brings happy memories.
Not posting this to say the missioning PvE is the greatest out there, or even particularly good, but it was certainly enough to keep me interested in learning about what seemed then and still is now a deep and rewarding play experience. Not a defence of the system, merely a point that the game's attributes do attract people, however crazy that might seem to someone whom the game's features do not attract.
To those who weren't able to remain interested for any length of time, I tend to agree with what some others have posted here in that ultimately currently the play experience is not for you and trying to argue about how horrible the game is serves no purpose. I like it. There are at least 150 000 other people similar to me who also like it and if you are still around in a few years, the dev team may have put together enough epic story arcs and other types of PvE content that you may like it too. Until that day, I recommend you go off to whatever game it is you do enjoy playing. Now I'm going to sleep after an evening chasing war targets around Empire.
Eve subs are 250,000 and they are the Best 250k in PC gaming. We want more of them, not people who worry about pve.
Enjoy, S*D
what?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?

all i know, is that pve-missions are a tool. exploration (sub-profession) is a tool. spying w/cloaked ships -- another tool. hauling, mining, producing/industrial, etc -- tools.
i know the cool thing to do is to say that eve pve is boring.
That is like saying DOOM is the same game as Gear of War 2 because you shoot a gun.
Lotro and WoWs quests are Elaborate? you're kidding right?
LOL .. have you actually played WOW/LOTRO?
The revamp in march is exactly to improve this aspect of Eve which is pretty weak.
my favorite mission in eve is the one that starts "im going on a roam into providence, hands up with shiptype if you want to come".
eve is not wow. and this is a great thing.

They should put that line in the AD banner.
Great line thanks....... Laterz, Off to club baby seals
PLaying: EvE, Ryzom
Waiting For: Earthrise, Perpetuum

The whole point is that i canNOT do any high level PvE content in the 21 day trial. I am not high enough. And a game needs to be good at ALL levels, not just high levels.
If they *can* make high level fun, they should be able to do it at lower levels and that is more effective to hook players.
To all those moving on to 'greener pastures' with 'excellent PVE content' if and when they come out :
Best of luck, and...

Enjoy.

Seriously, I don't get it. Why 'those' people want EVE to look like any other game on the market...?
edit- removed WoW rants
Weird cant believe this thread still here. I thought we resolved that the OP should just wait for Jumpgate Evolution
Playing Eve solo is very boring.
Enjoy,

what?
could we please get correspondent writers and moderators, on the eve forum at mmorpg.com, who are well-versed on eve-online and aren't just passersby pushing buttons? pretty please?
